I know the size of the towns involved. I was implying that it could've been a move that brought him closer to family.

I don't even think that's true. It's a 90 minute flight from Milwaukee to Cincinnati (and a 30 minute drive from Kenosha) and it's 3 plus hours to drive from Nowhere'sville OH (where Tiffin is) to Cincinnati or Oxford.

Why assume that he's the one who would be doing the traveling? And why assume that it's his family to which Yeager would be moving closer? Remember, he's a family guy.

I don't understand the move.

I think Izzy's explanations more than suffice. I'd add that having the ability to use scholarships in the recruiting process is an attraction all to itself as well.

Tiffin isn't a step up from every Division III program but it is a step up from Carthage.

Pat, can you shed some additional information on this move?  I checked the Tiffin football website last evening as well as this morning and there is no announcement/mention of this coaching move? Perhaps they just haven't announced it yet. Just curious.  Thanks.

I am quite aware of the mentioned benefits. As Pat mentions here, I just don't understand the move professionally. It's a step up from Carthage but if Yeager takes another step at Carthage and wins a title/gets to the playoffs, then the world is his oyster. It seems to me Carthage is a year or two away from getting there and then some much better options are in play. There is obviously more to this than we are seeing/hearing.

On football scoop they said Mike Yeager was hired for the vacant DC position at Tiffin, which opened when Matt Edwards joined the Tennessee Titans as a special teams assistant.

Oh -- I did not get that he was taking a coordinator position. I hadn't seen the official news either and thought he was the head coach at Tiffin.

Then I would agree with USee that this might be more of a lateral move. However, I don't agree with USee that getting a CCIW title for Carthage would immediately open D-II head coaching doors.

I hadn't seen that, either. The Carthage presser didn't specify exactly which Tiffin position Yeager had taken.

I'm with Pat, too. This isn't really a step forward as much as it is a lateral career move for Yeager.

Yea, this just took a turn for the weird. I definitely don't understand leaving Carthage as HC to be a DC at Tiffin.

And to be clear, I didn't say winning a CCIW title at Carthage would open D2 HC doors. I was saying his path at Carthage, if he continued their rise and became prominent in D3, seems like a clearer path to move up the ladder than to move to Tiffin.

Regarding Joe Davis, he left Wheaton and has since bounced around and is now a position coach at Fordham I believe.

Tiffin has both a HC and an assistant HC who both have been with the school for the last 7 years.  The last two years represent an upswing in wins so who knows what all this means?

Yeah I was under the impression the move was from Carthage HC to Tiffin HC.

Joe was dong well as OC Northern Iowa and had them in the quaterfinals of the FCS with a top offense immediately before he left for non football reasons.

Joe Davis was the subject of what is still one of my favorite off-the-field CCIW football stories.

Players generally understand when an assistant coach leaves to go to another school, because they know that frequent changes of address are the nature of the occupation in college coaching. But certain changes are much more difficult to understand, and when Joe Davis left his position as North Park's OC to take the same job at Wheaton, this was naturally regarded both by the Vikings and by the NPU community at large as making Davis the campus equivalent of Benedict Arnold.

Two weeks later a number of NPU football players were at a Cubs game, and they spotted Joe Davis one section over in the Wrigley grandstands ... and he was drinking a beer. A whole bunch of phones immediately came out and started taking pictures of the imbibing Davis, and according to several players they took great delight in sending the pics to the Wheaton AD.

Davis, incidentally, left Fordham and is now the QB coach at Albany.

Yes, his job changes are coming more quickly than is the norm.
