Then hopefully, Ypsi, you and better half will come close to matching your parents awesome achievement. If so, you have a lot of smiles to look forward to.

As for myself, a west suburban Chicago guy and Bears (as well as all the other Chicago teams) fan, next Thurs, 10/11, will mark 38 years of being not only lucky enough to have landed Mrs. A (after 4 yrs of trying), but also lucky enough to have stuck together despite the fact that being a Wisconsin native, she is a (forgive me) lifelong Packer fan. 😖

It's faint praise in the sense that the Cubs set a low bar for anybody, be it Messmer or somebody else, to beat, performance-wise.

Former NCC AD Walter Johnson was the best to ever do it.  ;D

IWU game with CC in a weather, lightening delay, giving me a chance to return to Ames Library and listen to opera.

Yes, just to remind the newbies on the Board, IWU does have one of the finest music and drama schools anywhere -- and the leading soprano in the world today, Ms. Dawn Upshaw, is an IWU School of Music grad.  Just say'in.  The most famous Titan opera singer, with a long long career in Europe, Jack Waddell, has now returned to Bloomington/Normal to take care of his ailing brother, and now gives master classes at IWU, as well.  What goes around comes around . . .

OK, returning to football.  :)

Ypsi, I expect you to protect me against all these uncultured sports fans here . . . LOL

(Let the criticism begin . . . )

It will be interesting to see how things play out the rest of the season in Rock Island and what happens after the season.  Despite some optimism (admittedly guarded) early in the season, Augie seems to be back sliding the past 3 games.  I had no expectation that Augie would beat NCC today, but I certainly thought they would play much better than they did.  This is a good NCC team, but they don't compare to some of the teams they have had over the past decade or so.  They are a strong offensive team, but they are not particularly good on the defensive side of the ball and yet, Augie was only able to put up 10 points on the day.  That doesn't show much progress from what we have seen out of Augie the past 4 seasons.  They actually played NCC much better in Bell's first two seasons, losing 27-10 in 15 and 42-21 in 16.  The last two years, Augie has lost by a combined 102-12.  Hard to say that's progress.  Unless they somehow regroup and start playing much better than they showed today, Wheaton will run them off the field and I don't see how they would be able to beat either Carthage or Wash U.  Unless they can win one of those games and beat both Carroll and NPU, it would mark the fourth season in a row without a winning record, something that has not happened at Augie since the 1922-25 seasons.

Mr. Ypsi

It took double OT to do it, but the Titans finally downed the Redmen, 40-34.  IWU had multiple chances to ice the game far earlier, but couldn't pull it off.  Then in the second OT, Carthage had apparently tied the game at 40, needing only a kick to win it, but the TD was waved off for a penalty.  The IWU defense never gave them a second chance.

I can't ever recall an IWU team that was so Jekyll-and-Hyde.  The offense was sometimes absolutely great (one pass reception made me think they had snuck Artie Checchin back into uniform!); near the end of regulation they had three consecutive 3-and-outs.  The defense was mostly great, but sometimes gave up inexplicable yardage.  And the special teams mostly stunk, except when their offense was stalled in the 4th and had to punt, having removed very little time from the clock: the Carthage punt returner tried to make a big play by back-tracking, and was stripped of the ball at the Carthage 13!  Offense, defense, and special teams were ALL great and horrible in the same game. ::)

I was astonished to turn on the computer a few minutes ago and see that the CC @ IWU game went into double overtime. I watched most of the third quarter, and it looked like Carthage didn't even belong on the same field as Illinois Wesleyan. The last play I watched before I turned off the computer and did something else was a partially-blocked punt by IWU that set the Titans up well within Red Men territory, with the Titans already up, 23-10. I figured that they were on their way to a second-half blowout win.

Titan Q

IWU survived. That would have been a devastating loss...especially because it seemed like the Titans had the game in hand.

Kudos to Carthage kicker David Collins — 46 yard FG in OT. And kudos as well to IWU kicker Patrick Tata who answered with a 37 yarder to extend the game. Tata made 4 field goals for the Titans yesterday.

IWU's 6-5 WR Jack Healy is really outstanding - he goes up and gets everything near him. 141 yards receiving and the game winning TD.  Healy has 140 more receiving yards than the next closest in the league stats.

IWU QB Brandon Bauer threw for 361 yards and had 4 TDs (2 passing, 2 running).  He's having a great year.

Just about every championship run includes surving a game like this one.

Yes, after the two hour weather delay, IWU-CC was all that it was billed as, and more.  2OT, tons of exciting moments, both teams playing well, and horribly, as Yipsi has mentioned.  Generally, key was Bauer and his many good receivers, esp. Healy.  Tough to stop the IWU passing game.  But, pretty lame running, some breakdowns on D and special teams, but a win is a win, especially at Homecoming, a great weekend in so many many ways, even with the rain and clouds.  IWU hung in there and got the W -- "which is all that really matters" -- according to Coach.  Again, much to improve on, much to focus on in practices for upcoming weeks, to get better, prepare for the tougher games at WashU and NCC ahead.  Keep going TITANS -- still all in your hands at 4-0 in league play.  Hope  kicker Tata gets special teams player of the week.  Bauer and his merry band of receivers surely deserve tons of credit for this win.  Good work on tackles for loss and 3 INT, too.

Great to see all the many dear friends, former TITANS back for Homecoming, especially all the good friends and comrades from the Class of '68.

Looks like Mr. Tata is really a big part of the Weenie offense.
Green Team in the drivers seat. Win out and the conference championship is theirs.
But it won't be easy.  ;)

New poll.....

Wheaton moved up one spot from 13 to #12
NCC stays at #17
IWU stays at #18
WASHU—ORV (4)

This year is a monster year for the CCIW in terms of offense. We have 5 QB's who are are having great years. Bauer, Davidson, McWilliams, Rutter and Stepina. 3 of these QB's are completing over 71% of their passes and all are over 61%.

In addition there are 8 WR's playing at a 1st team all conference level and a 9th, Fisher from WashU that is probably there but has been battling injuries.

Running backs are tougher to come by this year.
