Anyone surprised that D3football.com didn't have any CCIW pre-season all-americans?

no. not surprised at all. who would you have put on there instead of anyone listed? the only player in the conversation might be Kniss at qb and there are a few other pretty notable guys competing for that spot.

remember its how they finish not how they start.

"it's how the finish not how they start"

well if you look at the stats at the end of 2005 kniss had more yards and 1 less touchdown, give his percent of completion is a bit lower then the 1st and 2nd teamers. however NCC passed almost double what rowan did which will make his % go down. Overall Kniss should of been at the least a 2nd teamer. It is a shame they gave the 2nd teamer to an athlete that only played in 5 games...

Kniss--211 of 354 passes (59.6 percent) for 3186 yards and 29 touchdowns

Mike Orihel-- 119-176  (67.6) for 1533 9 touchdowns

Andy Collins--193-286 (67.5) 2628 30 touchdowns

I believe Kniss and Orihel have played exactly the same number of games in 2006, and this is a 2006 team.

Hey Shark,
How about this guy for second team?

He didn't make it either, what do you think?
'05 record

Played in 15 injury free games.

253-378  66.9 % 11 int  3736 yards  35 TDS QB rating of 174.7 #5 nationally

He was only the winning QB at the Stagg Bowl last year, but
after all that was 2005 and this is 2006! They are all equal now.

There was a comment made earliker that you really need to play a complete injury free season to be consided for All American status but that is not the case with the second team selection at QB?

The season will tell the story but IMHO the choice for pre-season QB is a bit weak.

Someone did make that comment but that person had no input in the selection of the All-American team whatsoever, so your repeating it is rather scurrilous, no?

Usee, well said as always.  I can't stand the pre-season All-America teams.  They should all wait until the end of the season and see who performed during that particular year.  If they played well the previous year, they would have earned it on the 2005 All-America team.

Personally I kind of like Pre-season teams.  I like seeing if guys measure up throughout the year to the hype at the beginning.  Also, it is good to see a wide range of regions and conferences represented.  Besides, win/loss records sometimes come as a factor at the end of the year All-American voting, not so much here but in the lower levels (DI and DII) of collegiate football.

From Wheaton's season preview, Coach Swider mentions a new wrinkle in the offense that was rarely used in the Coach Bishop's scheme over the years - the tight end.

That brings up another "unknown" aspect to keep an eye on for Wheaton.  With the retirement of Coach Bishop, how effectively will the offense adapt to the new schemes and play calling of Coach Hardy.  How significant will the changes be to scheme?  I don't expect sweeping changes, but each O-coordinator has his own philosophies and it is hard to replace a coach of the caliber of Coach Bishop.

Personally I do favor offenses that make use of tight ends...

Hardy himself was proficient throwing the ball, but he had some option in him too, which made for the occaisional surprise.

IMO, in pro sets of today's college game, having the tight end as a receiver is difficult to defend.

Most assuredly??? Your words.

To me that is a comment of agreement to the previous statement and my assumtion that comment came from someone who did have some input in the discussions.

Did that really cost me a smite?

"Are you surprised there are no CCIW Pre Season All Americans?"
Like many of you, preseason is just that  pre-  meaning before we start playing meaningful games.  Hopefully come post-  there will be 2-3 CCIW guys on that list.  I think there is a great amount of talent on each team in the CCIW.
Sad to see Coach Bishop go,  he is a great person and great football mind.  Congrats to him on his Retirement.
Looking back at 2005's EC Squad, Brogan (TE)  was a influential tool on offense both passing and blocking.  Our offensive system relied on the Tight End many times.
If I were to select 2 players from the CCIW as All Americans right now,  I would choose 1) Wallach  2) Kniss, but that's just IMO.

Pat Coleman,

Since this is basically your site (or you are the administrator), do you make most of the final decisions for the preseason all-american team?  Was Kniss a finalist, how about bellazini?  I am sure there is a perfectly good reason that the top 2 QB's were picked over Kniss, and I am sincere about that.

Those were my words responding to a comment about postseason teams, not preseason teams. And yes, I tend to smite people who misrepresent my words.

I'm not the only one who has a voice in the process but in the end since I'm the public face of the site, including Top 25, All-Americans and Team of the Week, I need to be comfortable with a team before we release it.

Yes, both those guys were looked at, Bellazini more than Kniss because the QB position was so stacked.
