Low blow on the Cubs comment.  At least the Sox won't win the world series again.  Go Bears.

Tough day for a couple of the conference favorites!  Great job by Wheaton getting it done against Albion!

What happened to Israel Brown?  Is he hurt or did the Frosh beat him out.

yuck... sorry guys... :(

My pickems for the week are officially destroyed  :-\

It's actually 29-0 Wheaton. Make that 29-7 Albion.... woo, way to score on the secondary at the very end of the game.  ::)

JORDAN KEMPER IS IN THE GAME NOW.... wooooooooooooooo! ;D

lol... the post made over like a half hour

Awww... Zach Ullrich goes in at the end of the game, and fumbles the ball off the snap (but recovers for a big loss). And then he fumbles again on the same drive, this time Albion gets it.

That's some serious first game jitters right there! He'll probably be a great QB for us at some point, but what a rough way to start. Bless his heart. ;)

I guarantee that this has been discussed at some point, but is Pete Ittersagen the younger brother (or cousin) of the former Wheaton player? For some reason that just doesn't seem like a very common last name. :)

This was certainly a weird day in the conference what with Augie, NCC, and Millikin all going down.  Although, I know not all of those games were pushover gimmes by any means.  And with Wheaton clobbering Albion, I wouldn't expect that type of game from a frequent playoff contender like Albion.  Any given Saturday I guess.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

heh... if NCC loses this game, I'm soooo quiting the pickems  ::)

Now, April, don't go doing anything drastic!

I haven't reviewed the picks, but I think nearly everyone had NCC and Augie among their most confident picks (I had Augie at 7, NCC at 5, and my 6 [Carthage] got a big scare).

So far, my least confident picks (1: IWU and 2: Wheaton) are the only big winners on the day! ;D  Either we are ALL idiots, or this has been a weird day in the CCIW.

Actually, in the whole country.  Wabash lost to Franklin, Mary Hardin Baylor lost to Christopher Newport, the OAC pickems guru (hscoach) pegged Augie as the favorite over OAC member BW by 38.5 - strange day.

My nominee for upset of week 2 would have to be CN over MHB - MHB was ranked 6th in the country, while Chris got 'monkey stomped' by Rowan last week.  But there are several contenders for upset of the week.

Jim Matson

April, Pete is Bryan's younger brother.  He had a good game tonight.

I don't know anything about Butler, but for Albion to have beat them so convincingly last week, they must really be bad news.  Wheaton absolutely killed Albion in the first half.  The Wheaton defense looks really strong this year.  Albion couldn't get anything going but one good drive late in the game.

Shocked at the North Central score!

CUW has a better team than people give credit. Their downside is they play in a relatively weak conference. I think that tends to hurt them. This is a big win for them and their conference.

The fumbles by Zach were not all his fault.  The first one he was in the shot gun and the snap by the 2nd string center was not very good.  I didn't get a real good look at the second fumble, but I was more frustrated by not being able to see him pass.  He probably would have played more if not for the long TD drive by Albion.  My thoughts on that to come soon...

Ok... my thoughts on the Wheaton game (for what its worth).

1. I was really impressed with their defense in the first half, particularly the defensive line.  Wow!  Andy Studebaker is an absolute stud.  He was in the backfield causing havoc on every series in the first half.  There were 2 plays in particular where he was on the QB before he could do anything.  He is going to be alot of fun to watch this season.

2. Secondary looked pretty sharp, especially in the first half.  2nd half they were in great position on a few balls, but didn't react very well to the ball in the air.  My initial reaction after Wheaton's first game against a pretty tough opponent is that Wheaton's defense should be much improved this year.  Much better team speed.  Very good size and excellent speed on the d-line.

3. Chupp looked pretty good... more like the Chupp of 2004 than 2005, which is a good thing for Wheaton fans.  Perhaps the serious competition at QB has lite a fire under him.  Still... nice to have a very, very solid backup.  Offense moved the ball well, particularly in the first half. 109 yards rushing and 92 passing in the first half.  Nice balance.

4. O-line was solid but showed some inexperience.  I think if they can avoid injuries, they should be a solid group.  Black ran very hard and I like his style.  Very north/south and always moving his feet.

5. Special teams were awesome and that will win some games.  Kickoffs were deep - some unreturnable.  33 yard FG made with plenty of leg to spare.  Extra points where solid.  Kickoff coverage was awesome - many times Albion started inside their own 15 yard line.  Couple of booming punts.  While it is near impossible at the D3 level to replace a kicker like Andrew Day, Wheaton appears to have some very capable kickers steping in, who have a few more years to get even better.

6. Defense was great in the first half - holding Albion to 24 plays for 40 yards.  41 yards came on a single pass play where Ittersagen had perfect position but the receiver wrestled the ball away with they hit the ground.  So the other 23 plays went for -1 yard.

My primary concern was Wheaton was really flat after they took a 29-0 lead midway in 3rd quarter.  Not nearly the same spark they had earlier.  I'm not sure if it was conditioning (which I doubt given Swider & Co.) or just losing the edge.  Albion is typically a very solid team so maybe they played a bit better as well.

Overall, very good first win against a very solid team.  Lot's of positives to build on and I think Wheaton came out relatively unscathed in terms of injuries.

I'm excited to see how this team grows and gets better.

Bummer of a day overall for the CCIW.  Not looking like the 5th best conference (as rated by D3Football.com) as a whole.  We need to rebound these next few weeks.

Thanks to those that listened and were able to get the game on d3football.com .  Unfortunately the score was rather lopsided 29-7.
Hiker Jim-- It was great to meet you at McCully tonight!  What a great environment to christen McCully's new lights.
Thank you for your support and positive comments towards me and the radio.
Now for the game.

Before you could sit down and take a bite of your hot dog, Wheaton goes up 2-0 on a bad Albion snap.  That was the indicator that it was going to be a LONG evening for the Brits.
Andy Studebaker and the entire Wheaton defense was suffocating the entire first half.  There was one play I recall saying on the air: "It's as if Andy Studebaker is in the huddle and knows what play is coming."
IMO,  Wheaton along with Elmhurst has one of the best defenses I have seen and Studebaker is the best D-Lineman I have seen in awhile.

I expected more from Albion tonight and thought that it was going to be closer. For practical matters, Wheaton shut them out when it mattered.  If you didn't know any better coming into the game,  you would have guessed that Wheaton was already 1-0 and Albion was opening up their season.
Great game for Wheaton.  As for the CCIW on the whole,  I must say that this is a disappointing Saturday.  I know it is early,  but we (as a conf.)  have to start winning some of these big time matchups,  because we know the (CCIW Champ) is going to have to face Mt. Union and/or an OAC Opponent in the playoffs.

bible study was fantastic. learned alot.  ;D

cant believe ncc lost. hopefully they can rebound....definitly sounded like a nervous cardinal squad. the lone bright spot was sulo....havent seen the stats, but i think he may have had over 150 yds of total O. not bad for a frosh.

after a productive night of....um...studying...time for bed. as for manana.....

GO BEARS!!!!!

CUW ran through, over, and around NCC. CUW has good size on both sides of the ball and thoroughly dominated the line of scrimmage. The OL and DL for NCC did not have a good night. Kniss was under extreme pressure on both sides of the ball.

CUW is a run oriented team. Earlier in the week, I posted that and several people jumped in to say that that CUW ran a balanced attack. Well, CUW through 9 passes and completed  2 for 12 yards. Meanwhile, they had 63 running plays for 348 yards. The CUW QB did not comfortable on any pass attempt. NCC seemed to control the CUW offense early. But, CUW went to a 2 tight end formation and NCC was overpowered. Why CUW didn't stay with that formation all night, I didn't understand. CUW ran the old fashioned wing t counter play several times and it was hugely successful when they ran it to the right side.

Three key plays early in the first half. NCC drives, sputters, and misses a FG. Second, NCC fumbles a punt backwards, CUW nearly returns it but gets great field possession (at the NCC 10) leading to a score. The NCC punt returner did not appear to cleanly catch a ball all night. Three, NCC drives again, then Kniss throws an interception. Then, CUW comes out with 2 TEs and drives 99 yards. So, in this sequence it could have went to 10-7 but became 17-0. NCC had two good first half drives but no points.

Sulo had a good night -- 28 carries for 127 yards and 5 catches for 6. But then he does come from the Chicago Catholic League where those type of performances are expected.  ;D Someone among the receivers needs to step up now (besides Stuedemann).
