Rivalries from a Wheaton football perspective (over the last 25 years):

My profile picture says it all for me - a Wheaton College linebacker crushing the NCC QB.  Ah... brings a smile to my face every time I post. :)

North Central and Augustana in a virtually dead heat, IMO.

Augustana: Year in and year out, they were the target for where we as a program wanted to be.  CCIW champs, National Champs...  Over the past decade, how many times has it come down to Augie vs. Wheaton?

North Central:
Little Brass Bell, campus' 7 miles away, Naperville vs. Wheaton, etc... We NEVER have difficultly getting ready for this game regardless of records or importance of the game in terms of standings.  Just so happens that in recent years it has become even more interesting.

Whoever you are"Cardinal Alumni" and I don't care.  Keep my name out of your mouth...... This is Sheldon Harris.

Oh, I see, changing your name and e-mail address makes a huge difference!  ::)  Don't worry I won't tell!

Sheldon Harris, Sheldon Harris, Sheldon Harris  :P

If you were a sibling, you'd be getting slugged right now. :)

"Now CardinalAlum, you stay on your side and no touching..."

Comet 14

I would think that Augustana would be a rivalry for any CCIW team with their success over the years. They take everybody's best shot.

I think that the games against IWU were always great.  There was always a great deal of hitting and the games were always interesting.  We hated old norm then too and I still hate him!  I also think that Elmhurst is a good Rivalry with Carthage.  However ( No disrespect to Elmhurst, Jaybird) How much of a rivalry is it when Carthage has won 9 of the last 11.  For Carthage, I think that everyone hates them equally.                                                                                                                                           You can't just choose an 11 year period to determine if there is a rivalry. I would be interested to see what the overall head to head record is for this match-up.

You talk of your hate for Norm and the games against IWU.  I'm confused.  I knew about your son, but your post made me think you played as well.

The first paragraph of my post was an earlier post by Redman. Sorry I'm new at this.

No problem.  I see what happened.    That's what caused my confusion! Must have been all of those Wheaton guys kicking me in the head after the whistle! :D

Augie is everyone's rival and has been for a while.  Perhaps the Wheaton/Augie situation has become more heated in recent years because it has been the last game on the schedule and has also determined the playoff picture in most of those years.  With the schedule change, the "rivalry" may fade.

In football, I don't that Wheaton has ever established a real rivalry.  I know that we have in soccer and men's basketball...  For me personally, I always love knocking down North Park in ANY sport.  The old Wheaton/North Park rivalry lines on in this family at least.

I could see how the confusion caused from getting your "bell rung" by the tenacious Wheaton D might result in your mistaking a whistle for the ringing in your ears.  Or was it the ringing of the "Little Brass Bell" on the Wheaton sidelines (more years than not)?  :P

Oh... here we go... only 3 weeks until the battle for the bell.  And the smack talk begins!   ;D

Hiker,

Did you play football at Wheaton?  Just asking because I can't remember and I'm trying to get the context of you stating Wheaton hasn't ever established a real rivalry...

North Central week always had a bit more to it... at least when I was a player and coach.

I must have missed this, but Comet, where did you play?

I said that. I think it just didn't show up as a Quote.

Comet you are correct, but I believe that Elmhurst really pushed the rivalry when Coach Rucks took over.  Not to make it against Rucks, but I think that both teams were really at the same level and made for a good game every year.  I call it a nice rivalry, but I guess I was just beating my chest a little bit. I do that sometimes, I am part animal!

Over all record against Elmhurst

33-20-1

Carthage began a home-and-home series with Elmhurst in 1936.  That series ran every year until 1942, when World War II interrupted collegiate football.  The Red Men and the Bluejays resumed their rivalry with the start of CCIW play in 1946.

From the Carthage website, it has a series history for every team Carthage ever played

Whoa, Alum. I can't believe a Wheaton player would hit after the whistle.

In my freshman year, in a JV game against Wheaton, I hit a Wheaton player at the whistle. Two Crusaders looked at me, and one said to the other "Let it go, God is on our side."  I swear that is true. And that's when I realized the NCC-Wheaton rivalry was more than just football.

I hate when work keeps me too busy to see what's going on here.  Wheaton was and is a big game for those of us at NCC.  The Bell gives it the extra incentive for the week.  The rivalry is good, but there is no hatred.  Carthage, IWU and Elmhurst brought out some bad blood back in my day.  Our coach was a guy that got you fired up to play and he passed on his feelings to us.  Coach Bishop was a guy that you couldn't have hard feelings about.   He was/is all about class.  You always wanted to avoid listening to Elmhurst's bell.   IWU and Carthage's fans always added fuel to the fire.  Carroll(who was in the CCIW back in my day) always took the occasional liberty at the whistle.  It was tough to have a rivalry with Augie when we were getting our butts kicked soundly!

That's impossible!  He's not on their side, he's coaching at Wesleyan, just ask him!    ;D

CardinalAlum, you've got the humor today.  With the "Sheldon Harris" bit and now this.  Very good stuff!
