That Italy trip sounds like it is going to be good.  I wonder if going on a trip like that has its actual practice/game playing advantages.  Obviously, it builds team chemistry and exposes players to experiences and a place they might have never visited.  However, it would be interesting to see the record of teams in the season immediately following the summer trip (ie go in summer of 05 and then 2005 season) that were allowed the additional practices due to the trip.  I wonder if purely "footballwise" the trip benefitted the team.

I'd venture to say no or very little.  The main positives are great team chemistry and you do get 3 or 4 weeks in pads to practice in May.  Yet, after going without them for 2 and a half months over summer, I dont' think you would retain too much.

I don't think there can be any doubt there is a benefit to 3 weeks of pad practice. you can get a lot of reps on your stuff and experience for all players with that amount of time. Whether it translates into success in the season is a more complicated equation relating to talent, injuries, etc. but the practice time has to help teams develop players with less experience.

I can't guarantee that there is any correlation for certain, but the Cards did win their first conference title in 60 years after their first trip ever overseas...

CardinalAlum,

This now means that any verbal abuse launched at diehardfan will not only illicit pages of responses from Wheaton alum, but also the HOF posters.

As far as the pad practice goes, I do agree that it may help younger players to a certain extent with field speed and actions, but I also believe that players will forget and have to relearn 90% of it when August comes around.

I personally do not think that going overseas benefits actual playing.  I think the greatest benefit is A) building up a team unity and developing friendship bonds  B) developing a sense that you can rely on your teammates and build up a confidence together. The months of May, June, July, most of August, etc.  guys are not practicing and the reason why I don't think going overseas has any effect, because you have that layoff in between.

Ask any coach in the world if they think their team would benefit from 3 weeks of padded practices their competition doesn't get and 100% will say yes. there is no substitute for experience and 3 weeks of practice gives you a chance to get players experience. it has nothing to do with retention of information. it has to do with repetition and experience. if you have a new quarterback coming in (see north central, millikin, wheaton) giving that player 3 weeks of practice can only help them learn the offense, make the reads, see the speed, etc. same goes for a new db, running back, lineman. it is a huge advantage.

Oh dear god... First of all, I hardly think I deserve the honor for my randomness on the basketball boards... so lets all be clear about this... I did NOT get the nomination for my football insights. I didn't even get it for my basketball insights, I'm pretty sure I only got the award for my friendships with the other HOFers.... I feel a little weird accepting congrats that have anything to do with me having insight or deserving it... we all know that the only reason I was selected was that for some reason, you guys are under the false impression that I am likable.  :-[

April, I think you bribed your way into the HOF w cookies. not just cookies, but performance enhancing cookies. I am launching an investigation. I want all Posters who have had any of April's cookies to submit samples of their posts before and after eating said cookies for testing. Also, going forward I believe strongly that Pat should institute random testing of posters to determine if they in fact have been using these performance enhancing cookies.

Its a scandal right here on d3sports.com. unbelievable.

usee, I agree 100%.  When we went to Germany in 1996, those 3 weeks of practice in May/June were tremendously helpful leading into the 1996 season.  Yes, there was still a layoff from June until August, but that's much better than November until August.  I think we had the talent to win the CCIW that year regardless of whether we took that trip or not, but there's no doubt in my mind that trip was a great benefit to accomplishing that.  Those 3 weeks of practice helped to get the players experience and come into fall practice with the depth chart already established instead of developing it during doubles.  We were much further ahead during training camp that year compared to the other 3 years I was there both physically as well as mentally.

Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!
