i think it will depend on the penetration iwu gets from it's d-line.  the safeties flying into the box are not necessarily to put pressure on the qb, but more for run support off the end's.  that's how we played when i was there and i don't think they've changed their d since then, but i may be wrong on that.  my memory may be hazy, but it seemed that tommy king passed on us a bit more than usual because our safeties were sucking up, and if a receiver gets behind the corners, then look out if the qb gets rid of the ball.  now, if the augie o-line doesn't contain the iwu d-line, then i believe you are correct that your qb may be scrambling.  i'm giving your o-line more credit than that though.

Devildog, I graduated Elmhurst in 2002 and remember the second mud bowl. Sounds like the one in the late 90's would have been fun to see.  Snow in Bloomington that early?   Very odd!
I think the key for Elmhurst if they have any chance versus Wheaton is the 1st 5:00.  How the Jays open up the game will determine their fate.  At Langhorst the Bluejays have come out firing and hung tough.  At McCully the last 3 years, Elm has been lifeless and lost the game really before the game even began.

All that big 4 little 4 talk from a while back might be morphing into big 5 little 3, at least for this year.  So far Elmhurst has played the other 2 little 3 candidates, IWU & North Park.  IWU has lost to Elmhurst and North Central.  North Park has lost to Elmhurst and got blown out by Augie.  All of this to say that the Wheaton/Elmhurst game might be a good barometer of how far apart the "stronger" in the conference are from the weaker teams this year.  Fun stuff for Elmhurst right now, they are top of the conference with North Central and Augie.  From my biased Wheaton perspective, I hope the Bluejays and Wheaton are tied in conference play on Saturday evening.

;) Talking of the Augie offense you are so right! If they get on a roll running the football they can run you right out of time and the ballgame!  I saw them in the early 80's as an assistant coach of an opposing college team in the NCAA
Playoffs when they were in the midst of their great run of undefeated seasons and national championships under legendary coach Bob Reade. Their run game from the Wing-T is killer and very tough to defend. Just ask anyone who has played them.  Carthage did a great job to hold them to 7points Saturday! Still Augie found a way to win.  They will still have a say in the CCIW before it is all said and done.  Barnes has done a good job of upholding their great tradition as has Schmulbach, Johnson, Blair, and company.  Great program - great system!

Jaybird, it was certainly a cold one that day.  Luckily, I was on punt return that game and with all the punting, I got to run around often enough to stay somewhat warm, just barely.  Otherwise, it was freezing.

For those who feel that NCC is at a Disadvantage this weekend, remember this...The Cardinals have lost only 2 times @ home in the last 4 years..once to augie and once to wheaton and neither of those losses were in the last 2 seasons.
Go Cards

FormerCard

The Augie Loss was in 02 (we got destroyed), and Wheaton by 14 in 03, .....no losses in 04 or 05 @ home.. Not to bad for the #16 Cardinals.  No reason to stop this weekend.   Cardinals by 14

Matblake,
About your comment about Sharp being "hurt" in the game on Saturday. I have proof from coaches and players that he wasn't physically hurt. I like Sharp but he needs to be more focused. When things aren't going right he breaks down (For example: last season against North Park). When things are going great he is a soild QB. There is no doubt that they will need a good game out of Sharp this weekend. He played very good last season aganist NCC so I know that he can do it.

GO REDMEN!!!
It's REDMEN not RED MEN

Mr. Ypsi

A clarification, please:

The CCIW schedule (and my understanding) is that the Carthage-NCC game is in Naperville; Around the Region TWICE says it is in Kenosha.  Which is it?  ???

Tailgater

Carthage @ NCC in Naperville. 1:00 p.m. kick-off

Thanks!

Around the Region sometimes has typos, but doesn't usually get something COMPLETELY wrong - this may be a first! ;)

I just checked, and the mis-location HAS been corrected.  Errors usually don't last long on the ship that Pat runs! ;D

augiedogie:

I think augie will roll on the ground. in 02 when they beat us 65-0 (and the coaches used that as a motivator through my senior year) and they ran all over us and then play actioned for another couple of scores...I am not saying they make a living off of it but I have seen close games look not so close when it comes to Augie and thier play action near the end of a game or two.  I don't think IWU can stop em regardless of how tough they've played them before.  Like you said Matt Roe may pass four times but if the power option/run gets going those four passes could be long touchdowns over safties that fly up on run support.

Gotcha RedmanFB.  Didn't mean to come across as negative.  Thought that was what you were talking about. Will try to phrase things in a less "accusatory" tone next time.  Sharp will indeed need to have a good game.  However, I think that I have finally been won over on the Carthage defense.  I think if he can limit turnovers the defense might be able to limit the NCC offense. I'm sure the Cardinals will do all they can to prove that theory wrong!

Do Carthage and NCC have means to listen to the game over the internet?

washdupcard

For further emphasis on the NCC-Carthage game, its NCC's homecoming.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Cards push 8,000 fans this Sat. considering the expectations and the importance of this game.

With that said, I can't be there (yet again) and will have to settle listenting to the game on the internet.

NCCAlum,

I remember being at that 65-0 game and I remember the few passes we threw and I think the only reason they were thrown was to keep the D honest (although it didn't really matter). The thing that I have seen out of this year's team however is that they only pass when they absolutely have to, such as when they played that stingy Carthage D. If they don't have to pass against IWU, which if they run all over them as you think they will they won't have to pass, they aren't going to put the ball in the air. Augiedogie I believe was trying to say that Augie seems less inclined to pass the ball even once in a game this year unless they absolutely have to. In years past it seemed that they had at least planned to throw the ball a couple times, doesn't seem that way this year.
