In the 1995 game, we ran "weak bullets" 3 times.  That's where we sent the weak OLB and SS from the same side of the field.  I would venture to say that MUC AVERAGED 35-45 yards on each of those 3 plays as they ran a slip screen right behind the 2 blitzing defenders.  MUC was clearly ready for this blitz and had a perfect audible ready whenever we showed it.

The most frustrating part, it was 14-7 Mount Union in the 4th quarter before those 3 slip screens.  Just like that it was 40-14!

MUC has done that time and time again.  It truely is quite remarkable... and annoying.  :-[

That's a trademark of Kehres.   If there is a weakness, he will usually find it...and then exploit it.     This should be a very good game from what I reading about Wheaton.

I believe there's going to be alot of offense on Saturday.  I was surprised at the number of players Mount Union and Wheaton both had on the All-Region team (well, maybe not so much surprised).

Pat had said he's going to send me a spotters chart for Saturdays game, but I think I could probably just use a copy of the All Region team (at least offensively).

Looking forward to a great game.

Thunderdog expressed my point Raiderpa.  It wasn't to say the CBs are "great" just the best we have brought to Alliance.  Wheaton has not pressured much in past games and we lose the battle upfront.  I believe the blitz is necessary to stop the run more than the pass.  In recent years MUC has destroyed the Wheaton D with the running game...they really haven't had to pass.  Yes, you will give up big plays but as a defense you hope to create more than you give up.

You make a valid point about Wheaton not pressuring much in pat games.  During the Battle for the Little Brass Bell (which, since I haven't had the chance to say it... is home) Fanthorpe had all day to throw the ball.  It seemed that Wheaton didn't even make an adjustment to get pressure on him.  I think that they will definitely need to blitz more than they have in past games.  Even though blitzing is a gamble every time you do it because you leave a hole in the defense, it definitely has its benefits and Wheaton needs to exploit it more often, IMO.

D-day: Game over, man. The playoff selection committee dropped the big one.

Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Otter: Germans?

Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.

Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!

[Runs out, alone, then returns.]

Bluto: What the heck happened to the CCIW I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you, we might lose in Alliance." Well just kiss my <backside> from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Kmic, he's a dead man! Micheli, dead! Herbert...

Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these guys. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.

D-Day: Let's do it.

Bluto: LET'S DO IT!

In all 3 playoff wins in 2008, Wheaton has come with considerably more pressure, even CB blitzes.  Tyler Langs had 2 sacks against Wabash.  It is a risk/reward tradeoff.  If you blitz, you had better get there.  So far Wheaton has... Hudson and Rupp were on their backs frequently, which was key to slowing them down.

The difference for this week... Wabash and Franklin didn't have a RB near to the level of Kmic (as if anyone else does).  Wheaton could be more aggressive and blitz without being as worried about getting burned by the run.  The last 2 weeks Wheaton was focused on stopping or slowing down proficent passing games.  This week I believe they will be more focused on stopping the vaunted MUC ground game.  Kmic killed Wheaton the last time they met.  Even if Wheaton does slow Kmic down, they still need to contend with the outstanding pass attack of MUC.  MUC has it all in their arsenal.  Quite a challenge indeed.

Thanks for the invite.  I've made the trek to Alliance for 2 of the 5 previous meetings (1995 and 2002).  Unfortunately I'm stuck in Wheaton this weekend, after travelling to Indy for last weekends game.  My wife will be out of town for the weekend, so I need to stay with the kids.

I'm guessing there won't be a huge contigent of Wheaton fans travelling this weekend to Ohio.  Next week is finals week so most students will remain in Wheaton to prepare for finals.  Some Wheaton alum and a fraction of students will make the trip, but I'm betting a majority will be parents and family.  The biggest game in Wheaton history falls at about the worst time from a student perspective.

Skunks--does that invite apply to former Mount people who because of circumstances beyond our control must cheer for Wheaton this weekend?  We're not traitors just supporting the kid.

Rocketraider.....ALL are invited!  If my youngest would end up playing for a great school like Wheaton, I would be "all Thunder, all the time" if and when they played Mount.   ;)

Errrr....wait.....when I said "ALL" that obviously didn't mean the before-mentioned "thunder mom".  (Keep this on the down-low please....)   ;D

HScoach

I'll buy the first if skunks-sidekick buys the rest. ;D

And ditto on the need to keep Thunder Mom away.......
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Thanks, Skunk for clarifying but the kid is coaching at Wheaton but played at Mount so I suppose I have a little different perspective than most. I'll try to clarify that perspective with a couple of pops on Friday night.
