Mugsy:  Since you wouldn't see my reply on the OAC page, I thought it would be best to post here that I agree with your point about pass defense EFFECIANCY being the stat that matters, not total passing yards surrendered.  The style of opponents has a lot to do with the total yards, but not near as much in the efficiency.

The same can happen with rushing defense.  The number that matters most is yards/rush, not total yards surrendered.  Rushing defense is also slanted by the negative yardage as a result of sacks which in my opinion shouldn't count against the running game.

Both of these factors come into play when looking at the historical data regarding Mount's rush defense.  Their great rush defensive numbers are aided by the fact that there isn't any true rushing teams in the OAC (other than MUC).  The only team that even tries to run it has been Otterbein the last 2 years, but that's only because they have a very mobile QB.  Prior to Rafferty, they were just as passy happy as the rest of the OAC.   Hence the base MUC defense being a nickel package.  Even if Mount tried to run a 4-3 as their base, they'd play most of the time with an extra DB due to the OAC offenses.  So when you couple the lack of rushing opponents with the negative yards from sacks, Mount's rushing defensive numbers are better than they would be in a more balanced conference.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

I submit our pride is totally warranted. Nauseating? Perhaps.

Right you are... I used an incorrect word before rushing off to meeting at work that I was responsible for.  I should not have used arrogance.  I don't always have the luxury of proof reading every post... something I need to do.   :P

The sentiment behind it is unchanged - unmitigated pride is nauseating.  It is a waste of my time to attempt to provide anything objective with regards to what Wheaton brings to the game, because it is dismissed as "it won't matter against MUC".  Like I said, perhaps so... Since that is the widely accepted view over on the OAC board, I'm not going to waste my time trying to add some dialogue from a Wheaton perspective if it is so quickly dismissed.

I'm really hoping for a great game on Saturday and I'd wish MUC good luck, but they don't need it.

I'm done with the OAC board.  The arrogance is nauseating.   :-\

Please don't paint every MUC fan with the same brush. I respect every Mount opponent and have always respected the accomplishments and talents of the Wheaton program. The Thunder is a final 4 team and deservedly so. Coach Swider has done a great job and is just as fine a person and leader as a football coach. I am very anxious to watch the 2008 version of the Thunder this Saturday and realize that anytime during the playoffs that if Mount does not come prepared with their A game, it could be their last.

Yet another valid point... I didn't intend to paint with such a broad brush.  My apologies to you.  Most MUC posters have been very respectful of Wheaton.

Best of luck to Wheaton... I'm rooting for you all the way.

Does anyone here have any info on the status of Rocky Gingg's injury? From what I've read on this website, it sounds like he's questionable at best, but I haven't heard any specifics about the nature or seriousness of the injury except that he limped of the field against Franklin. Wheaton desperately needs to be able to establish the running game if they want to keep it close this weekend and I'm afraid without Gingg there's not much chance of that happening.

Rocky has a torn MCL. From what I've heard, he's going to try to brace it up and play, but I don't know very much about that type of injury.

Wasn't a lot of this conversation begun by a couple of Mount Union fans saying that their offense would show superiority over Wheaton's defense?  That they may be overbearing?   :P

Sorry, but the double meaning was too easy to pass up.  All said, should be a good game tomorrow afternoon, with the outcome still in doubt 24 hours from right now.

I heard sprained MCL immediately following the Franklin game. Given he was questionable for the Franklin game due to other aliments and ended up rushing from 145 yards in 3 quarters, it wouldn't surprise me if he played on Saturday.  Playing with a bad MCL is not outside the realm of reason.

Rocky was a 3 time state champion wrestler in Arizona.  Wrestlers are a different breed.  He is tough as the come so unless a doctor says he can't go... I'm betting he will.

Thanks for the scoop. Not what I wanted to hear, but at least he's going to try to give it a go. After Ittersagen in 2006, the entire season last year, and now Gingg after the season he's had and before the biggest game in the school's history, I'm beginning to think Wheaton is cursed with suffering injuries to the wrong people at the wrong time. I'm sure the Thunder won't be making any excuses though. I know Andrew Hershey is a tough kid. Hopefully he'll step up and help carry the load.

I hope Rocky Gingg is healthy and ready for tomorrow.  Rocky, a good name to have going into what may be Wheaton's biggest game - ever.  A three-time Arizona State Wrestling Champion - wow!  Did he miss the interstate exit to the Mecca of Wrestling in Iowa and end up in Wheaton?  Has he wrestled at Wheaton?  I'll be watching Rocky from top row at about the north 15 yard line on Wheaton's side.  I wish him well but do have to hope the PRaiders win - it is Mount's biggest game ever as well.

I would have to agree with you...don't forget about Chupp's broken hand in 2004.  It would almost seem natural not having Gingg for the game.  Although, as in 2004, the backup (Hershey) is more than capable.
