Question of the day for North Park fans?

when was the last time North Park held an opponent scoreless in the 2nd half of a victory while kicking a forty-yard field goal?
Was that a 40-yarder?  I wasn't sure of the distance.

I'd hazard a guess that it would be a first for the Vikings because a 40-yard FG would tie for 6th all-time (according to the latest media guide, the others happened in 1967, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1992, 1993, and 2002).  It would take some digging to find the box scores for those games, especially the earlier ones.  The 2002 game was against the U of Chicago, which the Vikings lost, 33-9, so that wouldn't be a good candidate.  Four of the games were against Augustana, and the other opponents were Elmhurst and Carthage.
Well i had three choices in my mind, but I didn't know how long the field goals were:
1968 versus Elmhurst
1972 versus Wheaton
1979 versus Wheaton

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

North Park had a kicker during the Liljegren years that was probably the best in school history.  The guy had a Scandinavian surname and may have been on the team only one year.  His kickoffs consistently went beyond the ten and five.  He had at least two field goals at Elmhurst the year I saw him play.  His leg was actually the best I've ever seen in CCIW play.  Lots of loft on the FGs.

I agree with deepthroat.  Christianson will draw attention.  However, he was on the field easily less than 50% of the offensive time.  He needs to be on the field much more than that.  The other player mentioned by deepthroat, Mr. Gant, had an INT and a great kickoff return.  Carroll had no running game.

NCC fans,

Any word on Wenger's injury.  I was talking with a recent NCC alum yesterday and he indicated it may be an ACL injury.  Hopefully, that's not the case.  He is one of the best LB's I've seen play at the DIII level and I would hate to see his senior season cut short that way.

I certainly think he's made the most of his opportunity so far. Hopefully he'll get signed to the practice squad tomorrow or find another team with greater need at cornerback.

From everything I've read, this certainly wasn't unexpected.  That being said, those same articles seemed to believe Pete was a good candidate for the practice squad.  Fingers crossed that is the case.  Certainly, all CCIW fans are behind him and wish him the best.

It looks like Pete made the Eagles practice squad. Starting to follow in Studebakers footsteps but none-the-less congrats to Pete on his accomplisments thus far.

U of I's J Leman, brother of former Wheaton LB and CCIW DPOY JD Leman, just made the Eagles practice squad.  I haven't heard anything about Pete.

The Eagles' website lists eight on the practice squad and doesn't include Pete: http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/Roster.html

Hopefully he'll land somewhere before too long.

Ryan Johnson? He kicked the third-longest field goal in NPU history (tied for third, actually), but he was a Cooper-era player, not a Liljegren-era player. The only Vikings kicker listed on the CCIW website from the Liljegren era was Gary Jackson (1999). Not saying that you're wrong, I'm just wondering if it was Ryan Johnson that you might've been recalling.

Here's the list of all of the FGs in NPU football history (four-year era only) of forty yards or more:

Yards  Player  Opponent  Year
  50  Art Anderson  Augustana  1967
  46  Todd Nelson  Augustana  1980
  45  Mike Hynes  Augustana  1993
  45  Ryan Johnson  Chicago  2002
  42  Ronn McCall  Carthage  1976
  41  Bryn Nottoli  Carroll  2009
  40  Art Anderson  Elmhurst  1968
  40  Mike Hynes  Augustana  1992

You are correct. My sources are not all that reliable it seems. I am not seeing anything for Pete as of yet.

... or you could just bypass all that advice, concoct a mythical coach for your favorite school and give him a name like, oh, I don't know, Schmitty Torkelson or something, and then praise him in pithy one-line non sequiturs at odd intervals.

Beautiful.

And if you like non-sequiturs, you'll love Swedish potato sausage.

What in the world happened to NCC at ONU?  The loss was an absolute shock to me.  Especially after reading how ONU keep the ball for the last 7 mintues of the game.  With all that NCC had coming back from a team those season ended with a shocking playoff loss (and therefore assumed to be very hungry and focused), I expected them to roll over a Northern team that has been pretty pedestrian the last few years.  Northern has traditionally played tough defense, but hasn't had a real playmaker on offense in a decade.

With Mount traveling to Ada next week, I'd be very curious to hear what the NCC guys thought of Northern.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

I didn't watch or listen to the game so I don't have much of an explanation, but I do know NCC lost their multi-year All-American MLB in the first quarter to a potential ACL knee injury.  Matt Wenger is one of the finest MLB's I've had the chance to watch from the CCIW in the past decade.  He is a beast who plays MLB like you are suppose too.

When you lose a potential D3Football DPOY and team captain in the first quarter against a tough OAC team, it is going to have an impact.

That is by no means a complete explanation as to the egg NCC laid against ONU, but the loss of a leader like that will more often than not impact the attitude of a defense.

As I look at the boxscore what stands out to me is what the ONU defense did against NCC.  They held an offense loaded with returning starters, including a multi-All CCIW RB (Sulo) and a QB (Fanthorpe) mentioned by at least one D3Football writer as a potential D3Football OPOY candidate, to only 267 yards of total offense.  To me this is the most surprising result, minus the final score.  While it looks like Sulo had a decent game (120 yards rushing on 25 carries), Fanthorpe's stats are completely unexpected.

11-21 for 108 yards, 3 INT's and 0 TD's?  You'd have to go back a couple of years to see a boxscore like that for Fanthrope.  In fact, Fanthrope had 6 INT's in 10 games last year. Whatever the ONU defense did, CCIW coaches should study and try to execute as well.

ONU held the ball for 15 more minutes than NCC and had 80 offensive plays.  That is controlling the game.  While NCC jumped out to an early lead, it looks as if ONU took control of the rest of the game, including the drive to run out the clock.

Another key appears to be NCC's inability to convert turnovers into points.  NCC trailed 14-13 at half and the first 3 possessions of the 2nd half for ONU resulted in turnovers.  Points NCC gained from those 3 turnovers... 0!

Greg:

I was thinking of the time when North Park held it's Homecoming Game at Elmhurst in 2003.  Tom Scholle, Chris Baer, Scott Groot, and several others from that group met in Elmhurst to support Lilj.  Or at least that is what I recall.  The kicker in question was Christ Thomsen...he was 3-3 that day from 30-39 yards, and 7-9 on the season.  North Park lost 30-23 so Christ kicked often.
