We always get the Chiefs games here in Columbia, Mo...I just watched Andy Studebaker score a touchdown off a botched Cleveland punt attempt!

While mentioned a page back, here is a link to the video of Studebaker's TD:

great clip. I love the KC guy holding the Cleveland player's wrist so he can't grab the ball. lots of stuff happens on the bottom of these piles. Studebaker was close to the 6th player on the scene and he came up with the ball.

I was trying to think of the last time a CCIW player scored a touchdown in an NFL game.  I'm thinking Millikin's Jeff Query?

Query had 11 career touchdowns.  His last was November 21, 1993 (as a Bengal @ the Jets).

Is Studebaker's TD today the first for a CCIW player in 16 years?

Make it 14 years! Pete Metzelaars of Wabash College caught 3 touchdown passes for the expansion Carolina Panthers. In a 16 year NFL career as a 3rd round draft pick with Seattle, Buffalo, Carolina and Detroit he played in 212 games, most ever by an NFL tight end, including 169 in a row,and caught 383 passes in his career. He played in 4 Super Bowls with the AFC champion Bills. He caught 15 TD passes as a Bill, including one in the Super Bowl. He is now an assistant with the Indianapolis Colts. At 6 foot 7 inches and 250 pounds, he was a force as a blocker as well

The only problem is Metzelaars wasn't a CCIW player. :)

I picked up on the theme of some of the other boards, did some research and picked a CCIW ALL-Decade Team. I picked only 11 players on offense (pro style), 11 players on defense (4-3), and 3 specialists. I also picked an MVP for offense/defense and a coach.

MVP Offense: Kam Kniss, NCC
MVP Defense: Pete Ittersagen, Wheaton
Coach of the decade: Mike Swider, Wheaton

Offense:

QB: Kam Kniss, NCC
RB: Dante Washington, Carthage; Dominic Sulo, NCC
WR: Brad Musso, Wheaton; Martin Ceisel, IWU
TE: Bryan Bergman, Carthage
OL: Mack Hay, Augie; Josh Delancy, NCC; JD Sheldon, Augie; Mike Zeifert, Augie; Blaine Westemeyer, Augie

Defense:

DL: Mike Lindsey, Millikin; Andy Studebaker, Wheaton; Jeff Heinzl, IWU; Dane Lundgren, Wheaton
LB: Lenny Radtke, NCC; Matt Wenger, NCC, Ray Hartmann, Carthage
DB: Pete Ittersagen, Wheaton; Kevin Kaplan, IWU; Donavan Moore, Carthage; Tom Anthony, Augie

Specialists:

P: Aaron McLean, Millikin
K: Andy Beals, Millikin
RS: Kevin Kaplan, IWU

I had the hardest time picking running backs and linebackers. I also favored players who performed over more than 1 year and in many cases 2-3 years vs players who were 1 year wonders. The exception to that was Jeff Heinzl whom I view as one of the dominant Dline players to have played in the CCIW. Every team except Elmhurst and NPU are represented and I nearly picked Randy Wright as an LB. Darnal Rios from NPU as an RB was in the discussion.

interesting that Kniss is chosen over Fanthorpe.  Has anyone else ever been CCIW OPOY 3 consecutive years other than Fanthorpe?  Thats rare for any league at any level.  I would also say Sulo at RB could be in question only because he played half his senior year.  Nathan Wallick from Millikin could be in the mix at RB as well.

Nice topic starter though!

ps its Matt Wenger from NCC not Mike  :-\

I totally missed that.  It is somewhat surprising, yet somewhat not.  Martin had said the day of his GVSU's Div. II title game he wasn't sure if Kelly would offer him another opportunity since he had turned Kelly down twice before when Kelly was at Central Michigan and then Cinncinnati.  Add to that in GSVU losing the title game this year.  However, perhaps not surprising since Martin said he would accept an assistant's job there if Kelly offered it this time and also due to his Irish/Catholic background some said in which he, like Kelly, had always wanted to coach at ND in some capacity.   Anyway, it will be interesting to see who Grand Valley State chooses to be Martin's successor; whether they "stay in house" which has been successful the last two times and/or if they decide to "go outside".  I do not know any info regarding if any of the current assistants are under consideration and/or have a real shot at landing the job.

Choosing Kniss over Fanthorpe was really a no brainer. In Kniss you have the #2 all time CCIW leader in passing yards. Fanthorpe isn't even on the list of the top 8. Kniss threw the ball for 6,617 yds  and 62 TD's. He averaged 245 yds passing and 267 yds total offense over his career as a 4 yr starter. Perhaps Fanthorpe would be in the conversation if he stayed healthy and started for 4 yrs. (Fanthorpe threw for 3,910 and 50 TD's averaging 206 ypg passing and 255.6 total offense).  Fanthorpe was a much more active runner but he also had better talent around him every year than Kam did.

For Running backs I chose Sulo over David Chorney and Nathan Wallick for what he did his first 3 years more than what he did his senior year. He led the league in rushing as a freshman, soph and junior averaging 5.2 yds per carry each of those years (he averaged 5.6 yd per carry in the 6 games before he was hurt his sr year). Wallick led the league in rushing 2 of his 4 yrs and only averaged over 5.0 per carry 2 of his 4 seasons. It was a close call as wallick was a true beast and would be the next pick for me but in the end I chose Sulo based on his yds per carry number.

BTW, so you guys don't think I am a homer, my coach of the year was purely statistical as Swider leads in winning percentage over Thorne and Eash and his 5 conference titles in the decade is still tops.

AWESOME!  I was thinking about doing the same thing over Christmas,  but we hosted and it was crazy at our house.    Give me a few days to formulate my thoughts, but this is outstanding!

Great stuff as always, USee!  Totally agree on Kniss over Fanthorpe!  Also agree on Swider over the rest.  He is the best coach in the CCIW!   Happy New Year!!

I watched the Auburn/Northwestern game and it was one of the most exciting college football games I have seen in a long time. There was no less than 10 game deciding playes that could have gone either way. Auburn had the game literally won at least 4 times only to have a turnover, penalty or replay extend the game for Northwestern.

Finally, in overtime NW misses a tying FG but Auburn roughs the kicker. NW runs 3 plays w no result and  brings in a backup FG kicker and on 4th down they try a fake to win it and get tackled at the 1.

Unbelievable game.

Yes, that was a fantastic, unbelievable game!  I was rooting for Northwestern and they certainly had their chances to win it.  I will say, however, that I was extremely disappointed in the behavior of the Auburn players (unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, taunting, etc.) - just terrible.  Nor am I a fan of the Auburn head coach and while he did "have some words with" his offending players who committed those, I doubt there will be other consequences.   Most of those guys are seniors and like the announcers said (Spielman who was "right on" with this), they either "didn't get it or don't care".  I think the latter is correct - they don't care because they are seniors, yet that is no excuse whatsoever.  Anyway, great game.
