2 time All-American UWW linebacker A.J. Raebel has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and is beginning chemotherapy next week.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he battles this disease.

A.J. played at Cary-Grove and is a well-liked hard working great kid and all of us here in Trojan Country are keeping him in our thoughts.

Here is a link to an article in today's NW Herald.

That particular type of cancer is one of the more curable types, especially if caught early.  Most of us athletes have heard of Lance Armstrong's story regarding this, and I have known some people as well who have beat it.  Anyway, although I don't know A.J., I certainly join all the rest of you in keeping him in prayer as he faces this situation.

One of my sons high school coaches beat this cancer a few years ago, so I just wanted to wish AJ good luck in this battle.  It is one that you can win.

I picked up on the theme of some of the other boards, did some research and picked a CCIW ALL-Decade Team. I picked only 11 players on offense (pro style), 11 players on defense (4-3), and 3 specialists. I also picked an MVP for offense/defense and a coach.

MVP Offense: Kam Kniss, NCC
MVP Defense: Pete Ittersagen, Wheaton
Coach of the decade: Mike Swider, Wheaton

Offense:

QB: Kam Kniss, NCC
RB: Dante Washington, Carthage; Dominic Sulo, NCC
WR: Brad Musso, Wheaton; Martin Ceisel, IWU
TE: Bryan Bergman, Carthage
OL: Mack Hay, Augie; Josh Delancy, NCC; JD Sheldon, Augie; Mike Zeifert, Augie; Blaine Westemeyer, Augie

Defense:

DL: Mike Lindsey, Millikin; Andy Studebaker, Wheaton; Jeff Heinzl, IWU; Dane Lundgren, Wheaton
LB: Lenny Radtke, NCC; Matt Wenger, NCC, Ray Hartmann, Carthage
DB: Pete Ittersagen, Wheaton; Kevin Kaplan, IWU; Donavan Moore, Carthage; Tom Anthony, Augie

Specialists:

P: Aaron McLean, Millikin
K: Andy Beals, Millikin
RS: Kevin Kaplan, IWU

I had the hardest time picking running backs and linebackers. I also favored players who performed over more than 1 year and in many cases 2-3 years vs players who were 1 year wonders. The exception to that was Jeff Heinzl whom I view as one of the dominant Dline players to have played in the CCIW. Every team except Elmhurst and NPU are represented and I nearly picked Randy Wright as an LB. Darnal Rios from NPU as an RB was in the discussion.

I would have thrown in All-American, Ryan Glassman, Carthage on the offensive line, but then again I'm slightly prejudice.  ;) ;D

Also All-American RB Randall Baker, Carthage could be considered on this list.

I am certain he is the 1st Wheaton player to score an NFL Touchdown. I know Kenny Anderson from Augie scored more than his share in the NFL. Query is right and I can't think of another in recent times??

What about Jim Jodat from Carthage?  Didn't he play with the Jets in the 70's?  I know that is not "recent times", but another CCIW player with an NFL TD.

Jodat played with the L.A. Rams (1977 - 80) including Superbowl XIV in 1980 against the Steelers. He was their special teams Captain. He then played with Seattle Seahawks (1980 - 81) and finished with the San Diego Chargers (1982-83).  Coach Tim Rucks played with the N.Y. Jets in 1983.

Andy Studebaker was interviewed at half time of the IWU/Wheaton basketball game last night.  It was an inpromptu interview so some of the questions were a bit too general, but the broadcaster did a nice job on short notice.

A couple of items learned from the interview:
1. Andy will be in Wheaton until "optional" camps start up for the Chiefs in the spring.
2. Andy will be working out with the Wheaton football team - he stated that is where he feels most at home working out and is pushed hard.
3. He described how he won a parking spot for the season, as voted on by the staff, for attendance at workouts (no missed sessions for 10 weeks, not late for a single meeting, etc...).  He also pointed out how you can't take anything for granted, as his number has already been removed from the parking spot and you start all over again.
4. He highlighted how he'll never forget the feeling of his first NFL start, but how it is unfortunate that it comes at the expense of an injured teammate.
5. He discussed how he has worked on not allowing anything about playing in the NFL or how he plays week to week to define him or his identity.  Nice way to stay grounded.

Thanks for the update Mugsy.  If you get any more information as the year goes on, feel free to share it.

Sounds like a great guy, with a great message for all players to listen to.

The humbleness and way he treats everybody the same  was what impressed me the most about Andy when I met him.  Great to see a CCIW grad making it to the big leagues, yet remembers the little things and what is most important.

I was told by my son that the improvements to Art Keller Field will not be done by the fall and the Red Men will be playing their home games somewhere in Kenosha.  Does anyone know what field they plan on using?

Wheaton's Pete Ittersagen signs with Toronto Argonaut team for 2010 season.  I was surprised this didn't happen sooner after being cut from the Jags.  It seemed his best chance was to show what he could do at a professional level in the CFL before trying his hand at the NFL again.

Best of luck to Pete!  Congrats!
