And of course as soon as I say it hasn't been mentioned, Q beats me to the punch by 2 minutes.

FINAL:  Augie 28, Greenville 7.  Not a surprise.

Kind of a mixed bag of good and bad in this one.

First, the bad: Top two running backs (Robert Wood & Nate Pena) both injured. Not sure how seriously, but neither left the field on their own.

The good: David Lee 20-26 for 322 yards no picks and 3 TD's. Jordan Peart 10 catches for 111 yards and Zach McCullough 3 catches for 166 and 2 TD's (52 and 80 yards). The defense played well. Greenville only had 179 total yards got all 80 of its passing yards and its only TD on a busted play.

Like Ypsi said, not a surprise. Lee's performance is encouraging, but the injuries are a big concern.

Final from Holland, MI...

IWU 20
Hope 16

Trailing 16-13 in the final minutes, senior QB Brien Rooney capped a 63-yard TD drive with a keeper from the 3 to give the Titans the lead with 1:35 to play.  The big play on that drive was a 32-yard pass from Rooney to Dayton Burnett that got the ball inside the 5.

It was a tale of two halves for the IWU offense.  The Titans were shutout in the first, and trailed 10-0 heading into the locker room...Rooney had very little passing yards and was held in check on the ground.  In the 2nd, Rooney threw 2 TD's and ran for another.  IWU had 77 total offensive in the 1st and 248 in the 2nd.

IWU's defense gave up a few big plays in the first half, but overall played well.  The Titans held Hope to a FG in the final seconds of the 2nd Q after the Dutchmen had the ball 1st & goal from the IWU 3...that obviously ended up being huge.  Hope scored 25 points against IWU in both 2008 and 2009...holding them to 16 today seems like a solid defensive effort.

Another IWU/Hope thriller...third year in a row it came down to the final minute.  Hopefully a great learning experience for all of the new Titans on the field this year.

Titan Q

A few initial thoughts on the 2010 Titans, just from listening to one game...

* Despite losing so many great defensive players to graduation, I think this will be a pretty solid defensive team.  Not as good as 2009 obviously, but the Titans do have a lot of good new players in the mix.

* IWU has a good running game, behind QB Brien Rooney and RB's Eli Williams and Bo Lanter.  The Titans are unusually deep at the RB position.

* The passing game is probably the biggest question mark this season.  Rooney is a dramatically different QB than Kraig Ladd (who was a traditional pocket passer), and is obviously known more for his feet than his arm.  How well Rooney and his receivers are able to keep the defense honest will determine how IWU's offense goes this year.  I think the jury is still out on Rooney's ability to consistently connect down the field.  He definitely came up big today though when it mattered.  And in Joey Driver and Dayton Burnett, the Titans do have weapons at WR.

* The Titans have a good senior leader at QB.  Brien Rooney has a lot of experience coming into 2010, especially in some huge games last year when Ladd was hurt.  It's always nice to have a senior QB.

Still a lot of questions surrounding this IWU team...we may not have answers until October 2.

Final from Iowa 41-7 in favor of the cards.

Just finished up watching the Cardinals game (isnt that crazy that we are able to do that...thank you internet)

Cardinals 41 Cornell 7.

Cornell did more offensively in the air than I thought they would, but NC did a good job of bending but not breaking.   It was good to see Spencer Stanek have a successful starting debut.
20-35 361 YDS 2 TDs, 1 rushing TD.   Wenger looked good, which helps alot of fans/alumni breathe a sigh of relief.

I was impressed with the overall receiver play and the spreading around of the ball.

Definitely a better start than last year...I look forward to watching the Cardinals defend the run more in the future, love our linebacking core.

Aurora beat North Park, 9-7. The Spartans blocked an NPU punt early in the fourth quarter; the Vikings recovered it in the end zone but couldn't run it out. The NPU defense looked solid, albeit against an Aurora team that isn't going to scare anybody, but the new offense needs a lot of work.

Had to rub my eyes and refocus. Do I read Augie with 322 yards PASSING?  ;)
My oh my.

Went to the Carthage opener against Franklin. Beautiful day for a football game in Kenosha. Fun game to watch. Back and forth with scoring right down to the finish. Franklin has a solid team and was very evenly matched with the Red Men.

Quick observations: Carthage defense played well. Bend don't break style. Stood firm in the red zone a few times limiting Franklin to a couple field goals. One of Franklin's drives mid-game took several plays in the red zone and a couple of unfortunate penalties against Carthage before the Grizzlies finally crossed the goal line. Red Men defense is quick to the ball, good team speed, a little small on the d-line. Quickness on the line made up for bulk.

All-American kicker Tyler Funk performed as advertised. 3 field goals, 3 extra points. Missed a 49 yard attempt into a steady wind by a yard after Carthage took a 5 yard delay of game penalty. He did bang home a 42 yard kick into the wind to end the first half.

Evan Jones will do his damage to defenses this year. He wasn't as sharp today as I've seen him play, but the season is young. He is a leader with a lot of confidence. Although his receiving core is missing a couple of great receivers from last season this current group of WRs looks very capable.

Running game for the most part was non-existent until the last Carthage possession of the game. Jake Smith can carry the ball with authority providing there is some push up front by the O-line. Freshmen  back-up QB for Carthage was on and off for several plays and did a good job running what looked like a version of the wildcat offense.

The O-line is where I see the question mark for the 2010 Red Men. They could not handle the blitz.  There was frequently no running back set up along-side Jones in the backfield to pick-up the extra attacker(s). I was surprised that Franklin did not keep the blitzing going in the second half as they got to Jones frequently and disrupted the passing game in the first half. Not a lot of push from the front line on running plays.  Then again not a lot of running plays.

I was pleased with what I saw. There is a solid core to build on and I expect the Red Men will have another solid season. I was impressed with the Franklin supporters. They came out in large numbers and they do know how to throw a good tailgate party.

Actually, it was 331 yards. The backup completed a pass for 9 yards. That's 776 passing yards for Augie in their last two games. That's more than they had in their last three national championship seasons. Some of us old-timers are having a bit of tough time adjusting to the change.

Congrats to CCIW teams today.  Not a bad start to the 2010 season.  Nearly a CCIW sweep, though only the Carthage win would probably be deemed as noteworthy.

In other news, not unexpectedly Andy Studebaker is official part of the KC Chiefs 53 man roster.  Could he be in line for a break out year?

Hmm... Tennessee Titans have announced their 53 man roster.  Only 4 CB's and admittedly light in that position.  Could Pete be getting a callback for the practice squad?  Would be interesting to see what other CB's are available on the waiver wires?

Awesome news!  Congrats to Pete.

Pete really benefited from additional playing time due to injuries to the guys in front of him.  But... he did it.  He made the most of it and made the coaches notice.

Wonder if the Titan's played some "mind games" with the rest of the NFL teams since Pete was released a week before the final cuts.  Perception given to other NFL teams... D3 undrafted CB cut from Titans... yawn!  Meanwhile the Titans knew they would bring him back?

I have to ask... has there ever been two players in the NFL from the same D3 school during the same year?
