Most recent AFCA D-III Coaches Poll
7. North Central (Ill.)
13. Illinois Wesleyan
17. Wheaton (Ill.)
Have to agree that the game of the week is Wesleyan vs Wheaton. I'll have to leave the pick on who's going to win to the experts!

QuoteWhat's worse -- losing 70-7 in football, or 8-0 in soccer?

When playing football in England in the early 90's, the team I was on beat Cantebury 13-10 one week.  We played the same team 2 weeks later and lost 73-6.

I was fortunate to play on winning teams from junior high through college, in fact from junior high through my sophomore year the teams I played for lost a grand total of 2 games.  I think the worst loss I ever experienced was by 17 points to Augie.

Upon getting absolutely smoked by 67 points to a team we previously beat, I was dumbfounded, despondent, speechless... Our Scotish WR climbs aboard the bus and pronounces:

"Oy, heads up boys.  Just a bit unlucky."

Unlucky?  Unlucky?  It was lucky we didn't lose by 100!  I had to fight every urge to give him a forearm shiver.

The worst shellacking I ever saw North Park take in football was a 70-0 whitewash at Carroll in the final game of the 1976 season.  It was 56-0 at half-time and Carroll's 18 seniors came back for the second half in with their jersey's over their street clothes.  I don't think North Park crossed its own 40-yard line all day.  Uffda!

Of course I did see the 104-32 NPC win in 1968.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

I was just a few years into broadcasting EC games when we lost 62-0 and then 58-0 at Augie.  Let me tell you, it was tough to think of positives to talk about when your team is getting beat that badly, but we found a way.

The team you guys played at the Perk was an offensive minded team. This year's NCC team will be very defensive minded but explosive on offense. This defense is significantly better and this offense is probably not as good. The Cardinal offense hinges on the play of its QB. They line up in spread sets and are talented as a running team but the threat of the pass from the spread is often what enables teams in this set to run (do they keep 6-7 in the box vs a spread set, etc.). This NCC team will be a more confident group than the one you saw in 07 and probably a deeper team (which will show in special teams coverage, etc). Starting talent is about equal all things considered. I would not be surprised to see NCC run the regular season table and make a deep playoff run this year. Likewise I would not be surprised to see them drop this game and 1 conference tilt and miss the dance at 8-2. The difference between these two outcomes really rests on the development of their QB in my opinion.

Well now we know that we didnt drop the game against Eau Claire, so we will have to drop 2 conference games to go 8-2.   I absolutely agree with your assessment of NC's offense and I hope that Crackel establishes himself as the man Saturday night so there is no doubt on who will be quarterbacking this team.  If he doesn't and Spencer doesn't either, then an 8-2 record is more of a possiblity.  This defense is so fast and talented that I think the Cardinals could score one touchdown and still be in most games this year.   I know that sounds ridiculous, but I dont think it is far off.

I don't think that is far off at all.  If the other team can't score, you can win with a mediocre offense, not that I'm saying NC is mediocre on offense, especially if Crackel or someone else steps up.

Here's hoping the Cardinals avoid the injury bug.   I still have a serious case of the "what ifs" from the year that Wheaton lost Studebaker, the QB (name escapes me right now), and a bunch of other players.  Pehaps it's time for me to move on?  ;D

I think it is going to take more than 7 points a game by NCC's offense to win every CCIW game. While I think the NCC defense is capable of leading them to a CCIW title and has the potential to lead them deep into the playoffs, I am not ready to crown them yet. Let's see what they do against a high octane offense.

Ironically, devildog, this year's NCC team reminds me a lot of last year's defense-minded IWU team with a bit more of an upside on the offensive side of the ball.  What do they say -- "Offense sells tickets; defense wins championships."

I didnt say win every cciw game, i said to be in most games, and I should have specified OFFENSIVE touchdown.  I am also anticipating some Special teams touchdowns, a defensive touchdown here and there and a solid kicking game.

Don't get me wrong, I think this offense is much better than that and Coach Jeff Thorne has done a great job in plugging new players in this system every year to produce a High Powered Offense that ranks tops in the conference and near the top in the nation.  This is one of the best offensive lines we have had in a while at NC.    The point I was trying to make was how good I think North Centrals defense is.
