Excellent news about Nick Merchut.  I know that there are at least two other CCIW alumns associated with the AFL.  Ron Selesky (NCC) is the Director of Player Personnel and Steve Thonn (WC) is the Head Coach & Director of Football Operations for the Cleveland Gladiators.  Is anyone aware of other CCIW players in the AFL?

Carthage Kicker Matt Denny is with the Cleveland Gladiators

A heart breaker yesterday in Decatur. Augie scored the go ahead TD with 1 minute left.Another great day for Dion Wilson, went for 164 and was a real work horse as the passing game was what the stats showed. I was really impressed with the Millikin d, which I did not realize starts 6 sophomores, with 2 or 3 freshmen getting playing time also. The D  was without Chase Gruening due to an injury. After putting up over 400 yds on the Big Blue last year, Lee was held to a modest 213. the D forced fumbles and came up with big plays, but the offense was unable to capitalize on this. As this D grows into the season I think they are going to cause problems that they have not been able to in the past. they need to eliminate the big plays and they have the ability to be a top tier D in this conference. i believe if the O can get on track,  they still have the ability to surprise some people. Looking forward to see how they do this week at Carthage.

Mr. Ypsi

New poll is out - NCC advances to #7, Wheaton to #18.  IWU lost all but 12 of their points, but Elmhurst, Augie, and Millikin are all receiving votes.

As far as I noticed, that puts the CCIW on 'top', with two ranked teams and 4 in the ORVs (the WIAC has 2 and 3, the OAC has 2 and 2, the MIAC has 2 and 1, and the ASC and NCAC each has 2 and 0).

Unfortunately that will not continue as CCIW teams continue to beat up on each other.  I'd anticipate 2 teams in the top 25 and maybe 1 other receiving votes by end of season.

Of course - why did you think I pointed out the 'on top' now?! ;D

Mr. Flynn

Kind of suprised that COE, UMHB, and St. Thomas are still ranked ahead of North Central considering the way North Central  put to rest all suspicions of their pass defense and the less than impressive wins by the above mentioned.

Pat Coleman

Yeah, I mean, St. Thomas only went to its archrival and won in front of 16,000 fans on a field it hadn't won on since 1986. Totally less than impressive.

If you're a voter, why would you suddenly decide to move NCC ahead of UMHB, UST, or Coe?  UMHB and Coe struggled this week, but I suspect that for many voters their earlier victories over traditionally tough teams (Central & Hardin-Simmons, respectively) still carry a lot of weight.  As for UST, there's no way a reasonable voter would move UST down after their thrilling win in Collegeville.

ncc_fan

Make that Hardin-Simmons & Central, respectively!

IMO, the Cardinals won't move up further in the poll unless (1) a more highly-ranked team loses or (2) an undefeated NCC defeats an undefeated Wheaton team on Nov. 6.

Does it really matter where they are in the polls? They just need to take care of business and win. Everything else will fall into place.

Does it really matter?  If I'm a player, no.  But if I'm a fan, yes!  ;D

I'm a fan and I don't care where they are in the polls. Just keep winning-that's what matters. Go Cards!!

Was at the Millikin game, and much like the last 10 years, Millikin was out coached.  They never threw the ball down field, ran the ball on 1st down 90% of the time, and played not to lose, instead of to win.  Never seen safeties play 20 yards off the ball, especially when the other team is in the red zone about to win the game.

Scenario:

Millikin is up 3 with 3 minutes to go.  They just recovered a fumble on Auge's 35 yard line.  They of course pound the ball up the middle against 8 in the box and soft coverage 3 times in a row.  It is 4th and 3 on Auge's 30 yard line with about 2 minutes to go.  Do we go for it and win the game if we get it?  Nope, we get a delay of game, and elect to punt.  The punt ends up at the 21 yard line, so we net 9 total yards!!!  What kind of message are you sending to your kids?  Auge then drives the ball against soft coverage (see:  20 yards deep) and scores with 1 minute to go.  Millikin of course does not have any TO's cause we burned 3 earlier in the half.  Millikin is wasting a lot of talent, and unfortunately, the players realize it.

I remember beating a #6 nationally ranked Wheaton team in 2004 at home 39-21. My point, it's a ranking and they will never be perfect. It's hard to move teams down in the rankings if they aren't losing. Look at Boise St. this week in D1 for instance, they beat a conference opponent 59-0 and dropped in the rankings.
