9/11  Central d. Augustana 28-23 (-5)
9/25  Coe d. Central 37-28 (-9)
10/9  North Central d. Augustana 34-14 (+20)

The math is simple 20-9-5 = #7 NCC should be ranked higher than #6 Coe.   :P

Final from Langhorst Field

Wheaton 27
Elmhurst  24

Nice broadcast online.  Its great to be able to Watch D3 football online!

To me this had upset potential written all over it going into the game.  Wheaton almost never plays well at Elmhurst - at least 2 huge upsets over the past decade.

Wheaton was without Rocky Gingg and questionable availability of their 2 top receivers.

Wheaton played a pretty poor 1st half.  Wheaton's opening drive goes all the way down the field on a long drive, but ends with a INT in the endzone.  You can't do that.  Elmhurst takes the subsequent drive down for a TD - how many times does that happen?  After a INT in the endzone, the opponents next drive results in a TD.  Meador threw a 37 yard pick 6 in the second quarter to give Elmhurst a 24-14 lead. Wheaton had 75 yards in penalites and 2 turnovers in the 1st half.

Scottie Williams has 15 carries for 105 yards in the 1st half for Elmhurst, but 15 carries in the 2nd half only net 54 yards.

Elmhurst will be "kicking" themselves over the mistakes they made in the 2nd half.  2 key turnovers and special team bunders.

Key sequence in the 4th quarter:
1. Elmhurst drives 13 plays, 69 yards and over 6 minutes down to the Wheaton 11, but miss the 27 yard FG.
2. Wheaton take over after the missed FG, gets a first down, but then is stopped on a 4th and 1 at their own 45 yard line.  Huge momentum shift to Elmhurst.
3. Elmhurst takes over on downs, but Wheaton defense holds and Elmhurst punts and has chance to pin Wheaton deep in their own territory with 8 minutes left in the game.  Elmhurst gets a 36 yard punt, but Langs returns it 39 yards - to the Wheaton 46 yard line.
4. Wheaton takes 5 plays to go 54 yards and take a 27-24 lead.

Instead of Elmhurst leading 27-21 with only 7 minutes remaining, Wheaton takes the lead 27-24.  Wheaton's defense came up BIG in the 2nd half.

As I posted earlier in the week, I believe the Wheaton secondary made the biggest impact.  Scottie Williams had a huge 1st half with over 100 yards rushing in the 1st half alone, but Wheaton holds Furco to 12 of 30 for 173 yards.

Very Good Sumary!  The game never had a dull moment on either side.  It was great to watch on-line.  Very nice job to the Elmhurst Broadcast Crew - Very Professionally done.

I'm wondering if Wheaton has decided upon a single QB now.  After Meador threw the 37 yard pick 6 towards the end of the 2nd quarter, Roberts played the entire 2nd half.

Roberts stats for the game:
15-22 for 160, 1 INT, 3 TD's
9 carries for 79 yards, including a 64 yard run.

Anyone have an overview of the Carthage v. Millikin game?  I see that Carthage won 48-24 but the game was close early on.

Interesting to see Elmhurst's Corey Thonn with some receptions, a TD and some punt returns.

His dad (Steve Thonn) was a multi-year All-American WR for Wheaton in the 80's, one of the all time greats at Wheaton.

This illustrates the different vantage points that you and I have on this league, Mugsy, because I remember Steve Thonn as being a fairly mediocre basketball player for Wheaton. ;)

Illinois Wesleyan beat NPU, 42-0.

at least the park had positive yards... :( last year -6 total I believe.

surprised NCC was able to handle Augie so easily.
CC's Jones goes 8-18 passing with 2 ints vs. Millikin and still wins...I though MU would pound the ball.
Elmhurst seems to be much improved but as usual WC is for real.

Great Homecoming day in Kenosha and a big win for Carthage. I'd have to say this was a tail of 2 halves. Millikin took advantage of 3 Carthage turnovers in the first half to lead 24-17 at the break. It looked like the Red Men may be in trouble. Carthage got one of their scores in the 1st half with an interception and long return for a TD. The offense was not clicking in the first half except for a long TD run by Jake Smith. Not much passing attempted as it appeared Carthage was determined to establish a running game which improved as the game progressed.  As was debated on earlier posts by oldnuthin and NeonDeon I believe the Millikin coaching staff got out-coached at the intermission. Carthage pounded the Big Blue 31-0 in the second half and took Millikin completely out of their game plan. Carthage made great adjustments and Millikin did not have any answer for what the Red Men were doing. I have not reviewed the stats yet, but the Red Men negated the potent running game that Millikin depends on and Millikin's QB was ineffective with the passing game completing less than 50% of passes attemted. Beautiful day for a football game in the fall and a wonderful outcome for a Homecoming crowd. I'll share more details after I look over the game stats.

I particularly enjoy the votes for Washington U. and Morrisville State.

Agreed.  Auggie and Carthage should have both received more votes that Wash U.  :P  Perhaps the AFCA voters think Wash U. is going to knock off Wabash after losing to Witt. 37-7.

I think the AFCA voters are good at predicting the future.

OK...... so who would have guessed that Carthage would out-rush Millikin  186 yards to 146 yards and Millikin would out-pass Carthage 258 yards to 163 yards? Millikin's Deon Wilson had 136 yards rushing on 22 attempts which is pretty decent, but below Wilson's expected output. Jake Smith of Carthage had 156 yards on 23 carries. Millikin was 16 for 33 for 258 yards passing, but had 3 INTs (2 were returned for TDs) while Carthage was 8 - 18 for 163 yards and 2 INT's. Each team fumbled the ball away once. Millikin was penalized 6 times for 110 yards. Carthage had 3 penalties for 24 yards. Carthage barely won the time of possession 32 - 28 minutes

A little bit off topic, but a couple weeks ago one of the NCC regulars (I went back but couldn't find the post), said something to the effect that they would be very interested in what Eau Claire does against Whitewater. They don't play until next week, but in case you haven't seen the scores today, EC took one on the chin by a score of 35-14 by a weak Platteville team that I watched being the victim of a monster Wheaton second half a few weeks ago. The EC D gave up a 5 TD rushing day to a Platteville back with only 1 career rushing attempt, that coming last year. I picked Platteville in the WIAC pick'em, so the result only surprised me because of the margin of victory. Whitewater beat UW-P last week 49-17. Sorry to interrupt...back to your previously scheduled discussion.  ;)

If I were a gambling man, I would say Wheaton has settled on Roberts and the Cardinals have decided Crackel is their man...

A very solid summary for sure, this was a game owned by the Blue Jays through the first 40 minutes, but the game seemed to turn when Wheaton stuffed Scottie Williams on 4th and a yard from the Wheaton 17 with a little over four minutes to go in the third quarter.  Elmhurst had been moving the ball and looked well on their way to make it 31-14.  Instead, Roberts took the Thunder the other way with a 64 yard run and Wheaton scored to make it 24-21.  After that the Blue Jays went very conservative with their play calling and looked like they were playing not to lose rather than playing to win as they had prior to the turnover on downs.

Very questionable play calling for Elmhurst down the stretch as they took over with 6:26 to go and instead of working the ground game which had been working for most of the afternoon and instead backed up 14 yards and had to punt.  With that much time on the clock I fully expected them to ride Scottie Williams down the field and threaten to score in the final couple of minutes.  Instead it looked like they panicked once Wheaton scored and Furco's not a guy that can carry them when everyone knows the pass is coming.

If the second half was any indication then Roberts is going to be the guy for the Thunder and rightfully so.  With North Park coming to McCully next weekend though, I would expect one last week of experimentation with the two QB system.

This was a big win for the Thunder especially playing without Ellis, Zeller, and Gingg.  Charlie Antal really had a breakout game for the Thunder and Austin Zoerhof was a force out of the tight end spot.  Wheaton's going to have a large task ahead of them to keep the Vikings shut out in CCIW play before Carthage comes to town in two weeks.
