Greg,

I totally agree with you. I should have used a different word, like "preposterous" or "ludicrous". My definition (as used) was about level of competition but you are definitely correct that the system is set up for equal access. I wouldn't change a thing as it relates to that by the way.

The scenario includes the fact that the top 25 rankings mean absolutely nothing in selecting playoff teams. Benedictine is at the top of their conference and would go as an AQ. It wouldn't be remotely fair but it is distinctly possible.

The list of #1 seeds is this (from podcast)

UWW
Mount
Wesley
UMHB,CCIW Champ, St Thomas, Montclair St

those last 4 would all compete for the final #1. It is really about the committee picking the best 4 they can build a bracket around using geographic proximity. They have a lot of flexibility with Mount near the East and UWW near the North (as well as Wesley near the East).

If all these teams finish undefeated I think it likely the committee keeps things from being disruptive which would keep Mount North with CCIW champ, UWW West along w St Thomas, Linfield, Etc; Wesley South with UMHB and Montclair as the East #1.

Scariest thing about contemplating Benedictine getting an AQ for the playoffs is that they lost to the perrenial last place CCIW team (North Park) by a score of 31-20.  Not to pick a scab of the NPU faithful, but just to point out how crazy it would be, North Park has not won a CCIW game in over 70 tries and yet Benedictine might find themselves in the playoffs.   :o
Wheaton Football: CCIW Champs: 1950, 1953-1959, 1995, 2000, 2002-2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2019

my guess is they would be paired against the likes of UWW or the CCIW champ in round 1. ouch.

Mr. Ypsi

I totally support the access philosophy, and would not want to see any change in it.  The problem is that there are only SIX pool C bids.  Every year some teams who would beat half or more of the field get left out, most recently NCC who could probably have won the East (had not UMU been sent there).

But that's the hand we've been dealt - to end all doubt, win your AQ! ;)

I'm happy to do my bit to promote the proper spelling of "ludicrous" in d3boards.com's various rooms. ;)

Since I've already pointed it out, Mugsy, or something very much like it, the scab's already been picked:

Quote from: Gregory Sager on October 17, 2010, 05:46:07 PMKeep in mind that NPU owns a win over the first-place team in the NAthCon, Benedictine. If the Bennies go on and win their league this season, how's it gonna look that they lost a game to a North Park squad that has yet to score a point against opposing first-stringers after three weeks of conference play?

Hey Mr. Ypsi:

I realize this is not a "DIII related" question (so the rest of you colleagues here, please forgive me) and that you and I (along with others) have all discussed this many times in the past.  However, I just thought I would ask your current opinion/assessment. ;D  Another tough year for Eastern Michigan and Ron English.  That is not good.  How much longer (i.e. many more years) do you think the adminstration will let this go on there?  I hope they never drop football (and they shouldn't) and it would be a shame for them to drop out of the MAC.  Yet, perhaps a DI-AA (I mean FCS) scholarship program would be better for them.

One of our Hope players (whose father was a teammate of mine there "many moons ago" ;D) had told me this story:  his son was being recruited by Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.  He went to an EMU game for his visit and they only had about 1,000 fans in Rynearson Stadium, which as you know is a beautiful stadium now.  His son looked at his dad and said..."Dad, on good days when Hope is winning, they get way more spectators than this at their games, over 3,000 and even 4,000-5,000 for big-time games - I don't want to do this".  So he eventually ended up at Hope.  Of course, it didn't hurt that his father and brothers all played at Hope either. ;)  But, I thought it was an interesting, but somewhat sad story about the "state of things at EMU".  What's your "updated" opinion?  ???

If you'd like UWW to stay in the West and Mount Union in the North, who is the #1 seed in the East?
If you say Wesley, then MHB is the #1 seed in the South? I know the line that the 4 #1 seeds aren't necessarily the four best seeds but it doesn't seem to recognize the seasons that Wheaton, NCC, and St. Thomas have had.

I'm still working through the scenario where NCC loses to Wheaton, perhaps stays in the Top Ten, and doesn't make the playoffs yet unranked Benedictine (who no longer plays NCC because the games were too one-sided) does.

Good question...i'm not sure. maybe Wesley?!?! I'm sure these number 1 seeds will be debated for the next 3 weeks. that's why we have these boards  :)

To avoid the wrath of other posters, I've sent you a PM! ;D

Thanks Ypsi!  I probably should have done that too, but also thought the quickest way to "get your attention" was on this board, since you most post here even though you contribute to the other boards.  Again, my apologies to our CCIW colleagues here!  I will check the PM.

Interesting about #1 seeds- possibly have UWW in "west" along with UST, Wartburg, Linfield, MWC champ, Cal Lu, Coe and Bethel. In which case UWW would play Bethel. BTW, the "north" seems stacked this year.

I would the mwc champ is the 8 seed and gets the UWW award.

Do you really mean NPU -17.5?  Wouldn't that be +17.5?
