It's a debate every year when you get into the DPOY and OPOY categories.  Should only players on winning teams be seriously considered?  What if you are the main threat on a losing team, but are still able to put up some numbers?  I think it's natural to have a dichotomy with this.  You don't want to punish guys who have more weapons around them by not considering them with post-season awards because maybe they have an "easier" time making plays.  Yet you don't want to overlook a good statistical season simply because the team did not do well in the win column.

usee

I think the leading candidates for OPOY are:

Evan Jones, Carthage
Dion Wilson, Millikin
Jordan Tassio, NCC
Jordan Roberts, Wheaton

I really think this comes down to Jones and Wilson. Those two guys have put up numbers against everbody, even in losses. Scottie Williams has no chance because he rushed for zero yds against NCC and less than 30 yds against IWU. Tassio and Roberts have a chance because they are the best offensive players on the two best offenses (the loser this weekend is out of the picture). Dion Wilson ran for 88 yds against NCC and over 100 every other week. Overall I think this goes to Evan Jones. He threw for 331 in a loss to Augie, 260 in a loss to NCC and 275 in a loss to Wheaton. In my view he is the best offensive player in this conference hands down. That said, I think this is a two horse race between Wilson and Jones. Tassio doesn't get enough touches to be considered (if Kucuc didn't steal 5-10 touches a game from him he would be the front runner)

On defense I can't make a case for anyone other than Wenger. The best defensive player on the best defensive team. I think Tyler Langs has a shot if he figures prominently in a Wheaton win Saturday but barring that it's Matt Wenger's award to lose.

Next week I'll have some thoughts on All conference players, where there are some battles going on. Linebacker, Runningback, OLine in particular are going to be some tough choices for all conference. Many of these spots will be decided in HTH matchups these last 2 weeks. At LB you have the likes of Wenger, Wright, Gresko, Mago, Rogers, Schneiderbauer, Weber, and Kronmiller just to name a few. Those are as good a group of LB's as the CCIW has had in some time.

Looking forward to that, you always have a good view of the entire conference. But first, the Battle for the Bell!

Bringing 14 yr old daughter to game, getting early (hopefully early enough) to park and find a seat. Is there anywhere we can walk to eat near the stadium. Thanks.

I think that if Tassio or Roberts plays well this weekend, they go to the top of the list.

Dion Wilson could have easily gone over 100 yards against, NCC but he carried the ball only once in the 4th quarter. He'll need a strong performance in his last game (against Wheaton). His negative is that Millikin will likely finish 1-6 in conference play. I just think it's hard to rank him over the the primary offensive threat of a team that goes 10-0.

Evan Jones didn't have a strong game against NCC and he had a rough second half against Wheaton. He's an outstanding player but not OPOY.

I agree that Dion needs a couple of big games to be considered, FYI he was injured for most of the second half of the NCC game.

Evan jones threw for 256 yds and 1 TD vs NCC despite getting sacked 7 times. I'd say that's pretty good.

Tassio and Roberst stats aren't close to jones and Wilson. If they were, then they would be better candidates. The other two have consistently put up numbers with little help around them. The separation of those two to the rest of the field (despite being on worse teams) is hard to ignore.

Whats the ceiling on the QB Roberts?  I remember him coming out of H.S. as a great player.

I went to Wheatons website to look at Roberts bio and it made me want to look up TD passing records on the IHSA website....
It looks like 3 Record holders of TD passes in IHSA state championship games are current CCIW players..

Ya the Burger King is way down Roosevelt.  There's not a whole of places to walk and eat at close to McCully unless you walk to downtown Wheaton which is about five blocks away and there's Muldoon's or Gino's East.  The Beamer Student Center right up the hill from the stadium does have a restaurant in the basement that has burgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and fries as well as a coffee shop that has sandwiches and salads and things like that.
