I'm back from the hibernation! Looking forward to some of the new non-conference matches this weekend. My focus has been on my youth team and high school football lately so I will try to update everyone on some Carthage news as soon as I can.

With the new D coordinator I think the Carthage defense will be much improved over the last couple years.
This will be needed as the offense is going through the challenge of replacing Evan Jones, but Coach Pebbles should be up for the task.
Opener this weekend at Carleton.

Speaking of new D coordinators...

I wonder how the new DC at IWU will do. I am interested to see if there are any new schemes or approaches with the personnel he has. IWU has an abundance of returning talent on the defensive side of the ball.

Only 4 more days til gameday

I was looking at some you tube videos of Wheaton Freshmen.  I was very impressed with Luke Thorsons (FR 6'6" 186lbs) hands.  Every catch seems to be a play of the week.  Not sure of his speed.   Jordon Roberts needs some tall guys to throw to with his throwing style.  I hope one of the two tall Wide receivers gets some playing time.  The other being Mark Hiben (FR 6'4" 197lbs)

Luke Thorson #8

Look at any of the other games on you tube and you will see what I mean.

Luke is the son of Chad Thorson, 2 or 3 time All-American MLB for Wheaton in 87-90'.  Chad played in the Senior Bowl in 90', signed a free agent contract with the Giant's and play a year or two for the Birmingham Fire.  Chad was the last player cut from the 90' Giants.  The other LB's on that Giant's team were familar to most people who watch the NFL - Lawerence Taylor, Harry Carson, and Carl Banks.  Not a bad core of linebackers, and Chad almost made the team.  I'm sure CardinalAlum can share how much fun it was to block Chad.

Luke's older brother, Hunter, will likely see reasonable time at TE this season (6'6" 240lbs).  Look for both Thorson's to make a serious impact for Wheaton during the next 3-4 years.  They are both taller than their father and will likely be bigger as well - Chad was a very big MLB (6'2" 250lbs).  Btw... Chad had a 40 time somewhere between 4.5 and 4.6, so Luke and Hunter have the genetics for size and speed.

Mark Hiben played on some very, very good Glenbard West football teams (state champion and runner-up).  Look for him to be a player.

Wheaton has another freshman TE who is 6'6" or 6'7".  I don't recall a taller team at Wheaton.  That many tall receivers could create some serious match-up challenges for CCIW defenses.

I didn't realize that Chad had sons at Wheaton!  Holy cow, that makes me feel old.  But it's exciting that we'll be hearing/reading the name Thorson in connection with the Thunder again.  I was a freshman Chad's senior year and still remember being in awe of him both on the field and in the weight room.  Super nice guy, though.  Those Wheaton teams of that late-80's era had some talent on them, didn't they?  Thorson, Parish, McGowen, Richie, Aycock, Frazier . . . it's a wonder anyone ever scored on that D.

Mugsy, what was behind that comment about the injury bug?

Pat - Great job on the Kickoff. Well worth the $11. Got me even more excited about the upcoming season.
You win! You always do!

Sure, in three years playing against him, I might have actually kept him blocked once!  :-[ :'(  Held him a few times pretty well though!   ;)

2011 Season-Opener:  The Carthage College football team (0-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opens its 2011 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 by traveling to Northfield, Minn., to play Carleton College in a 1 p.m. game at Laird Stadium.

Looking at Carleton:  Kurt Ramler (20-30, 5 years) coaches the Carleton College Knights, who went 3-7 last year (2-6, 7th tie Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).  This is the first meeting between the two teams.

Is anyone else counting the hours to kickoff?  The 10:05 start on the east coast for the NCC vs Redlands game will seem a bit strange, but somehow the Cardinal fans will find a way to stay awake.

With that said, this game scares me to death.  NCC has had some rough openers, Ohio Northern two years ago, Concordia (Wisconsin) a few years back, and Illinois Benedictine in '84 come to mind.  Ok---forget the last one, but you get my point.

ncc_fan

Was the '84 NCC vs. Benedictine game the one that ended in a 0-0 draw because both offenses were completely inept?  That was a dreadful game.

Kovo

Dreadful indeed! We were blown out at home 32-8, I believe.

HAPPY NCAA FOOTBALL KICKOFF DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is about time it got here. The couch has missed me and my tv has missed football. I am assuming the floor has missed me pacing on it as well.

I see Augie is going to be unveiling a new logo?  Why?  I think longstanding, traditional logos are great.  Look at the Bears and Packers.  A simple C or G is recognizable, and the "less is more" approach is better.

Great story on Jenkins AAT.  I remember watching him prior to his injury and thought if he stayed healthy, he would be a beast.

I hope Augie isn't going to change their logo.  I love the tradition, and what  it represents.  When I see their helmets, I think of success and championships.
