... Millikin disposed of Hope, 27-15, in the one CCIW game played on the other side of the lake on an MIAA opponent's field.

Meanwhile, North Central is eviscerating hapless Olivet, 35-0, halfway through the second quarter in Naperville.

Interesting historical notes: This looks like it'll be only the eighth season since CCIW football was inaugurated in the fall of 1946 that Augustana (0-3) has gone winless in non-conference play. It should be noted, though, the Rock Islanders still have a chance to redeem themselves by winning the CCIW's automatic tourney bid and then winning a tourney game. Also, the last time that Augie went 0-3 against outside competition was 1952.

The last time that Augie couldn't win a non-con game was back in '93, when the Doggies ran the table in CCIW play and won the league with a 7-0 record, but the CCIW had to do without a playoff team in what was then a smaller 16-team tourney field, as Augie's 7-2 overall record didn't make the grade.

Yikes. There's still five and a half minutes left in the third quarter, and NCC is beating Olivet, 72-0 ... and the Cardinals have the ball again in Comets territory.

Final: North Central 86, Olivet 14

CCIW opponents (i.e., Elmhurst and NCC) have outscored Olivet on the past two Saturdays by a 150-28 margin ... and the Comets have to face Wheaton next week.

Freshman QBs Dickens and Matthews were in from the time NCC went up 21-0 in the middle of the 1st quarter.  Reserves plyed virtually the entire game.  I remember when NCC defeated North Park a couple of years back 83-7, their starters were in until half-time.  The team took a LOT of heat for running up the score (even though they ran the same play every offensive play in the fourth quarter!!).  This time, they did everything to not run up the score.  You can't tell the freshmen to not play hard.  I am certain that this will be the last NCC v. Olivet game for a while.  I look forward to seeing OC rebuilding and getting back to playoff form (as they were a few years back).

Any Augie fans out there that can give me any kind of idea about what is going on in Rock Island?  From all the things I heard about Cushman from former and current players when he was hired (how much they respect him, what a great teacher he is, how he'll have the players ready, etc.), it seems he has the program in high speed reverse, headed to the bottom of the CCIW.  Hate to be negative, but I can't imagine Augie not ending this season with their first losing record since 1978. Despite the assurances of a few recent, former players, it looks like Augie Alumni were justified in their opinion of how Cushman's hiring came about and that the administration at Augie simply took "the easy way out" in making this hire.  That, coupled with the hiring of a mid 20's Offensive Coordinator (whose only experience was as a special teams coordinator at a JC and a grad assistant) has to make you wonder what the heck is going on in the Quad Cities.

Chicago ran back an Elmhurst punt 77 yards for the go-ahead TD with a minute and a half left in the game and then picked off a pass deep in Maroons territory on Elmhurst's ensuing drive to knock off the Bluejays, 33-26, this evening on the South Side.

UW-Platteville leads Wheaton, 7-3, at the half in southwestern Wisconsin.

Well a tough night for my jays but lets take the positive side of things. They threw a pick in the end zone that was returned for a touchdown, fumbled on the 2 yard line going in, and had a kick ran back for the go ahead score. I was not able to attend but hitting the refresh on my phone looking at the play by play caused for many curse words out of my mouth. Chicago has always been a quality opponent. I think the positives are that the Offense continued moving down the field at even at the end of the game had a chance to tie. You can not have that many mistakes against a team that can take advantage of them. The defense held Chicago while losing the starting field position game for most of the night (13 points of either the Returned INT or the punt return is my counter point to go with the field position).

Going into the bye week I think this will serve as a great reminder the Jays of how to finish drives and games. I know the coaching staff will be able to use this as a great coaching tool to get them ready for conference.

I still have hi hopes for my Jays and still think the conference title can be theirs!

Looks like QB Rob Gallik (24-35, 289 yards, 3 TD) and WR Joey Driver (9 catches, 95 yards, 3 TD) were IWU's offensive players of the game.

Possibly a big blow for the Titans as promising sophomore RB T.J. Stinde left early with a knee injury.  I assume we'll know more about the injury soon.

That's the positive side of things? I'd hate to see what you consider to be the negative side. ;)

That's a solid win for Wheaton. UWP has played do very dominant games prior to this. Wheaton just seemed to have that 'champions' mentality throughout the game. Every time Platteville got close, Wheaton responded and pulled away. Gutty win for the Thunder.

The Cardinals may have eviscerated (thanks GS) the Comets, but at least Olivet was principled enough to honor their contract.

One of North Central's non-conference games this season was supposed to be with Cornell IA) with whom they signed a home and away contract last year. However Cornell called the NCC athletic office in January and said after being stomped 41-7 at home by the Cards last year, there was no way they were coming to Naperville for a beat down this year. You would think that with the former NCC top ass't basketball coach now the head bb coach at Cornell, that enough of a relationship would have been established wherein such type of conduct would not have occurred.

Anyone know if there are any general implications/penalties involved with breaking a contract in D3land? Maybe it depends on the individual contract between the 2 schools.

I met some of the Olivet parents after the game. First class people who strongly support their son's efforts no matter how they compare to the competition. Hope they had a safe trip home. That white Explorer would have been a little lighter minus the baskets of apples and bananas and the cases of pop. Hope the Comets at least enjoyed their post game pizza if not the game.
