Correct- Wheaton's religious recruiting accounts for most of their players.

Army-Navy is one of my favorite games of the year.  My favorite part is actually at the end of the game when they play the losing team's alma mater first,  then the (winners) run over to their sidelines and salute their fans with the winning team's alma mater.  There are no losers in that battle.

Yes the WIAC has a bunch of IHSA kids, but I was referring to why Augie is losing #'s to the suburban schools.

could this be the year Augie's streak of consecutive 500 or better seasons falls?

At least the Illini made it a good weekend on the big school scene.

Unless you are a Northwestern fan and hand to watch them fall to the painfully slow death caused by the Army Triple Option

As a big fan of both the option and the service academies, I took a break from my usual disdain of D1 football to note that win with pleasure.

On the note of service academy games...has anyone ever been to the Army-Navy game?

I have been to two of them.  Incredible experience!

This room already dealt with the announcement of the new Wheaton mascot. We discussed it at length last month (it's around page 1522 or so of the CCIW football room archive), and we got in most of our jokes about "Snuffleupagus, Jr." at that point. If you'd like to start Round Two, however, I suppose that some of us could be up for that. ;)

I watched a bit of the KC Chiefs game this weekend.  It looks as if Studebaker has lost his job already to Justin Houston.  I watched him pretty extensively over the pre-season and this move does not surprise me.  I still hold the thought that he is being played completely out of position as the strong-side OLB in a 3-4.  At some point in his career, I'd love to see Andy be allowed to at least play the weak-side OLB in the 3-4 or even better, a DE spot in a 4-3.  If he would be allowed to put on 25-30 lbs, get in a 3 pt, and be told, "go get the QB", I think he'd flourish, even at the NFL level.

The Cardinals may have eviscerated (thanks GS) the Comets, but at least Olivet was principled enough to honor their contract.

One of North Central's non-conference games this season was supposed to be with Cornell IA) with whom they signed a home and away contract last year. However Cornell called the NCC athletic office in January and said after being stomped 41-7 at home by the Cards last year, there was no way they were coming to Naperville for a beat down this year. You would think that with the former NCC top ass't basketball coach now the head bb coach at Cornell, that enough of a relationship would have been established wherein such type of conduct would not have occurred.

Anyone know if there are any general implications/penalties involved with breaking a contract in D3land? Maybe it depends on the individual contract between the 2 schools.

I met some of the Olivet parents after the game. First class people who strongly support their son's efforts no matter how they compare to the competition. Hope they had a safe trip home. That white Explorer would have been a little lighter minus the baskets of apples and bananas and the cases of pop. Hope the Comets at least enjoyed their post game pizza if not the game.

Agreed (belatedly).  Olivet College's administration earned my respect by continuing to honor their contract.  The OC student athletes on the field Saturday (and last year) earned my respect by playing hard to the last minute of the game (check the box -- they scored both TDs fairly late in the game).  The OC parents and fans earned my respect by continuing to support their team at this time when the program is clearly in a rebuilding mode.  I look forward to playing OC again when they have turned the corner.  Until then, I wish the Comets the best with the remainder of their season.

The Chiefs show Houston as the starter on their team website. Personally, I think Andy gives a lot of coaches in the NFL exactly what they really want. He will be going as hard as he can on every down with no ego getting in the way. It is unfortunate that he is behind a draft pick now, but we all know that Andy will still be getting his time on special teams at the very least.

On a limb, I think Andy would be very successful in a role similar to Clay Mathews or James Harrison where he is primarily in a pass rushing role playing 2 yards behind the LOS. Hopefully we get that chance to see him playing in a 3 pt stance or playing on the weakside.

On the topic of Wheaton players in the NFL...does anyone have any updates on Ittersagen?

I understand the sentiment towards Cornell backing out of their contract with NCC.  But didn't NCC then have a contract with Coe, only to back out because it was only for 1 year and Redlands offered a 2 year contract?  That game with Coe was showing up on the schedule.  I didn't think they released a schedule if the contract had been signed?

Of which schedule are you speaking?  The NCC @ Coe game never showed up on NCC's schedule (because there was no signed contract).  My understanding is that Redlands deal came through at the "11th hour" of the Coe/NCC talks.

doolittledog

It showed up on the Coe schedule, we were talking about the matchup on the IIAC board.  Then it was gone a couple of weeks later.  My guess is they agreed to the game but had not signed the contract.  Then Redlands came in and offered them a better deal than the agreed to - but unsigned game with Coe.  I understand with no contract means no official game.  But if there is complaining about Cornell walking away from a contract, that isn't that much worse than going back on your "word".  Legally, it is a big difference...morally it is close to the same thing.

I'd agree that if you give your word you should keep it, however, you can't fault NC for taking the Redlands offer. The only word of advice I'd give North Central is this-No more long road trips to start off odd numbered seasons :'(
