DBQ1965

With Mugsy's stats and Stagg Or Bust's comments on SOS ... I wonder why I even am bothering with the drive over tomorrow.

Why?  Well, there is NC's hospitality and friendliness ... some great facilities ... and of course ... the game is played on the field ... not here.

Hope springs eternal.

GO SPARTANS!

Ummm... why are you reading anything into what I posted?  I merely posted a side by side capsule of core statistics with ZERO commentary.  I figured it might be good for those to see what the teams have done for comparison to see what to watch for tomorrow.

Keep me out of the middle of the NCC & Dubuque and IWU & Monmouth fans.  I have my opinion about what may happen tomorrow, but I don't have a horse in the race so I'll keep out of the way.

Yeah, Mugsy! Why would you be so mean with all your numbers? It's not like you took your time to do the same thing for every game that Wheaton played all year so all of us posters could get a nice look at the tale of the tape...what a jerk!

But, seriously, the DIII experts-in-chief have the MC/IWU as among the closest pick 'ems tomorrow.  I think it's a toss up.  Great D vs. Great O. IF the Monmouth offense goes, um, "off", do the Titans have enough fire power to hang with them? Mugsy's numbers would indicate that they would really be stretching any previous output.  Looking forward to it!

I think the Titan defense will shut down (or at least slow down) Tanney, but super QBs on what otherwise are probably weaker teams scare the heck out of me - I well remember what Chad Rupp did to NCC in 2008 (though take comfort that Wheaton apparently learned enough from it to beat Rupp and Franklin later the same tourney).
I still break into a cold sweat every time I hear the name Chad Rupp, and that is exactly why I am not all that excited about seeing Dubuque and Wyatt Hanus in Naperville tomorrow.

DBQ65 -- The playoff experience is fantastic for the fans, players, and coaches alike.  I have been to many playoff games over the years, and wouldn't trade the experiences for anything.  You will find nothing but hospitality and friendliness at B-W Stadium.  And, you will walk away with good memories, whether your favorite team wins or loses.

Hanus is completing 74% of his passes.  I don't care who you are playing... that's sick!

Agreed.  Interesting comments from AC's Rob Cushman in the attached article from the Naperville Sun:

I know ... I went to my first play-off game in '79.  Last year I was at the UWW - NCC game in Naperville.  There is nothing like it.  As for favorite memories ... well ...

Titan Q

The Pantagraph's game day article on the Monmouth/IWU game...

http://www.pantagraph.com/sports/college/football/iwu-looks-to-slow-down-ex-lexington-star-qb-tanney/article_8e0b015e-124e-11e1-ae74-001cc4c03286.html

Everything I have read this week on the game makes it clear that IWU's gameplan centers around ball control.  Makes sense.

It will be interesting to see if the Titans can establish any kind of run game today.  Obviously it will be hard to control the ball without one.  Here is a look at IWU's rushing production this season...

With T.J. Stinde
vs Hope: 45 rushes, 238 yards
@ Alma: 40 rushes, 105 yards

Without T.J. Stinde (injured in opening minutes of Aurora game)
vs Aurora: 39 rushes, 86 yards
vs Wheaton: 26 rushes, 60 yards
@ North Park: 37 rushes, 198 yards
@ Elmhurst: 39 rushes, 98 yards
vs North Central: 23 rushes, 61 yards
@ Millikin: 27 rushes, 45 yards
@ Carthage: 33 rushes, 66 yards
vs Augustana: 40 rushes, 167 yards

I think the # of rushes stat will tell the story when this one ends.  Will we see the Titans able to run it 40 times like they did last week vs Augie?  Or will this be one of those 23-27 rush days where the Titans abandon the run early and rely completely on the passing game?

I suspect Monmouth's defense is equal to the defenses in the bottom half of the CCIW this year (Elmhurst, North Park, Augustana, Millikin).  I'll be disappointed if the Titans are not able to put at least 28 points on the board.  I guess the question would be, will 28 be enough?

I'll go:

IWU 34
Monmouth 28

I mentioned to a former Wheaton poster that I understand there is no way to have a perfect system, but watching the first half of the IWU game, and ever so cautious of sounding like I'm putting the cart in front of the horse, but it's really too bad Wheaton is sitting at home right now.  They would crush this Monmouth team from what I've seen so far.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Rough 1st quarter for NCC followed by dominant 2nd. 24-7 at half.

Injury news: Starting CB Stu Charles left the game with a knee injury in the 1st quarter and hasn't returned (has been trying to loosen up on sidelines, appears to me to be a sprained knee). Willie Hayes seems to be nursing some sort of lower body injury as well but is playing through it.

Once NCC went with Tassio at "QB" they ran right through Dubuque.
You win! You always do!

Final...

Illinois Wesleyan 27

Almost nailed the score on the number.  Of course it took 3 OT's and the score was reversed.  :-[

Absolutely horrific offense does in the Titans.  From late in the 2nd quarter, Gallik throws 4 pics and fumbles going into the endzone in 3OT.  I stand by my earlier statement that Wheaton crushes this team.  Give Monmouth credit, they took advantage of the IWU mistakes to do what they had to do to win this game, but that one stings.  Just absolutely terrible play on the offensive side of the ball for the Titans today.

I guess Wheaton would have crushed IWU as well then considering Monmouth actually won the game?? :-\
