I think USee said it best on Saturday (11/19) on the NCAC Boards when he said, "The biggest challenge is figuring out how to score points against them (NCC)."  On my count, NCC has seen five better offenses than they will see on the field this coming Saturday.

(DIII Rankings)     SOS        Rushing       Passing          Total Offense     Points Scored
Redlands              #30        #41            #87               #37                  35  (SCIAC)
MU                      #2          #57           #107             #61                  14  (CCIW)
Elmhurst               #147      #28            #57              #22                  10  (CCIW)
Wheaton              #32        #160           #18              #40                  7  (CCIW)
Dubuque               #189      #77             #4               #2                    13 (IIAC)
Wabash                #114      #83            #129            #117                 TBD (NCAC)

The Bash Defense and Special Teams have combined for 11 TDs this season. I don't think I can emphasize enough how much of an impact those components of the team have had on our offensive numbers. It's been staggering the extent that the games have been dictated and won without major contribution from the offense. They haven't needed to do much. Tons of short field opportunities.

Against Depauw, our offense didn't touch the ball for three consecutive series. At the end of the game, we'd thrown for like 12 yards. No-one I know was bummed about that. It didn't mean our offense was terrible. It meant everything else was so good.
I believe that points from turnovers may be more difficult to come by this coming Saturday.

(DIII Rankings)     SOS        Turnover Margin    Fumbles Lost   INTs Thrown
NCC                     #28        #5 (+1.7)             7                    4
Wabash                #114      #11 (+1.3)           10                   5

I should note that NCC's opponents had an average net turnover margin of 0.0 while Wabash's had an average net turnover margin 0f -.67.  So, the teams that Wabash played were prone to turnovers while the teams that NCC played were not.

What about points from short field position? What about the one or two that-never-happened-to-us-before plays that'll happen on Saturday? What about Chamblee or a blocked punt? What about the Wabash offense actually being asked to win a game and for only the second time all season?

Look, I pour over stats as much as the next guy. They're a lot of fun and, if you find the right collection of them, they offer a pretty good picture of how two teams stack up. Our offensive numbers, I'm just telling you, are not indicative of the offense. They're just not. We play a ****ty schedule and our defense has dominated.  It took us 5 games to figure out what to do with that from an offensive stand-point and our identity, today, is run the zone option w our athletic QB and ask him to throw deep a couple of times a game. That's it. Low risk offense. They won't be able to do that Saturday and I think they'll be just fine. They've got offensive players that can beat good teams, I promise.

BashBacker#16

I'm trying to understand the similarities (or lack thereof) between this Saturday's Wabash/NCC matchup with the Wabash at Wisconsin Whitewater in 2007.  Off the top of my head...

- we have a different coach - Erik Raeburn (not Chris Creighton - his last game at Bash)
- we are 11-0 (we lost to DePauw that year, we beat them 45-7 this year)
- we are at Hollett Little Giant Stadium as the #2 seed in the North region
- MLB CJ Gum (6'0 230) is NOT Adi Pynenberg - completely different styles, different players
- the Bash O is balanced this year (credit ER), we relied on the pass in 2007 which didn't help with the fact we were playing in a snow/ice blizard in 6" of snow by kickoff

GrizzBacker - I find it entertaining that you are on the CCIW board blasting Wabash for our SOS, kudos for scheduling your opener but WHO THE HELL HAVE YOU PLAYED (because you got blasted against the opener!) in your power conference?  Talk about gross.  Mighty Manchester had you on the ropes.   :o  If you want, let's compare NCAC playoff records with HCAC playoff records.

All we are getting here is cherry picking of stats and an impassioned "Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" speech.

Seriously?

AndOne,

I said "at least 3..." which can certainly be interpreted as 4 or more. Bulandr wasn't the household name on that defense like Garza or Hayes. I think NCC plays 6-8 defensive linemen every game and all of them would be starters at most bother d3 schools. Bulandr is only on the field about 60% of the time due to the way they rotate players.

USee---

I see your point. I'm not sure Garza or Hayes were more of a "household" name than Bulandr as I attended almost all the home games and heard Peter's name called after making a play about as often as Valente's or Willie's, either of which would have also been a solid choice for the honor Peter received. I think the fact that these 2 athletes are on the same plain with the award winner plus the fact that, as you say, NCC plays 6-8 D linemen all pof whom would be starters at most other schools points to the OVERALL strength of the Cartdinal defense.

Additionally, haven't we all heard since we began playing and following sports that "defense wins championships"?

BashDad----

You have done an admirable job of promoting your team's strength(s) through your statistical analysis and use of numbers.

I have a couple of numbers for you. How about if Wabash wins I send $20 to the charity of your choice, and if NCC wins you only need to send $10 to my choice?

Not sure what prompted this response. God forbid someone actually use stats over a full season to make an estimate about what will happen in a game. Also, if you would take the time to read Griz's post, he says that like the NCAC, the HCAC is not on the same level as the WIAC or CCIW. I don't see him ever railing on the NCAC or gloating at how much better the HCAC is than the NCAC.

Depends on which "Bell" you're talking about --- it certainly wasn't tame on the Monon Bell thread.  In fact, it's been pretty tame in here compared to that.   ;D

Anywho, this is a match up Wabash fans have been looking forward to since at least 2005 (when Capital interfered with both of our plans  >:( ).  A contest between the RED POWERS;) :)

Mugsy should've saved it for when Wheaton plays the Carleton Kannnn-nig-its.

At least he quoted the lines correctly. Alas, a couple of other regulars here blew their movie quotes. USee, it's, "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?", not, ""Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" And, Goulet, the immortal words of Sgt. Hulka are, "Lighten up, Francis," not, "Settle down, Francis."

Hey, correcting movie quotes isn't much, but at least I'm doing my two bits for the conversation. ;)
