Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there.  What a perfect day for the 2012 college football season to kick off.  NCC romped in the Barcelona Classic this morning with a final score of 36-3 after being up 36-0 at the half.

Come on "Stagg" where is your usual brillant analysis  of NC's recruiting class?!

FYI: I'm not sure if it was noted previously but the first game for Wheaton on there web site is scheduled for a Thursday.  8/30/12 at 7:00 pm. Mugsy do you or any other posters know why?  Should we expect the usual crowded stands?

I know Wheaton has a highly promoted annual soccer tournament (Bob Baptista Invitational) including both mens and womens teams that runs all day Friday and Saturday.  It makes sense to play conflict free football the previous evening, especially since many students will be gone for the long Labor Day weekend.  I can anticipate a big football crowd Thursday night--perhaps larger than if played on Saturday given the circumstances.

Good thoughts 77.  In addition, Wheaton only has one home game in the non-conference portion of their schedule and they typically like to do a night game during the non-conference with the warmer weather and such.  With the soccer tournament going on all weekend, having 2 night games adjacent to each other (literally since both fields are next to each other) and competing for fans doesn't make sense.  With the Thursday night game, football gets to have their non-conference night game, without the conflict 77 mentions.

In addition, per the CCIW football rules (at least from several years ago, they may have changed but the football handbook is no longer on the CCIW website) November games must be played at the 1 PM time slot.  Therefore, CCIW teams have 5 opportunities to play a conference night game.  Wheaton has 3 home games in Sept/Oct making them eligible to be night games.  However, with Homecoming and Family Weekend being in October (I don't think the College would risk putting either one of those weekends in November), Wheaton basically has the chance to play one conference night game, which they have scheduled against IWU on 10/20.  My feeling would be that they invested in the lights, they would like to use them as much as possible.

Finally, with the High School football crazed Du Page area, I don't think Wheaton would schedule a game for Friday night.  Plus, this also gives any coaches who have kids playing any high school sport on Friday nights a chance to see their child participate.

So is Tassio going to be NCC's fulltime QB in 2012?

From the sounds of it there will be quite the QB competition for NCC this year. Spencer Stanek (who was a part-time starter in 2010) has returned to the team after sitting out 2011. He is competing with Dicken and Tassio for the starting QB spot. I would have to guess Tassio will end up at RB.

Yea, I would think Tassio will be more dangerous at RB than QB for NCC.

Lastly do others agree that Illinois Wesleyan has taken a step up in the division in the past few years.  For me the question is how big is that step going to be with the improved recruiting and facilities.

Over the last 5 years, IWU is right there with Wheaton.  CCIW wins 2007-2011...

North Central: 33 (5 titles)
Illinois Wesleyan: 25 (2 titles)
Wheaton: 25 (0 titles)

Um..........NCC has 6 straight titles in 6 years..........  ;D ;)

Gaspari led his team to a perfect regular season finish (12-1 overall), and the state semi finals. This past season he threw for over 3,100 yards and 30 TDs with only 7 interceptions. In his final game he completed 28 of 45 passes for 371 yards, and 3 TDs.
Besides North Central, he also considered Dayton, Drake, and Butler as well as fellow CCIW schools Carthage and Augie.

wouldn't be surprised to see all three get some time at QB early on, although I've heard Stanek had a great spring.

Signs point to the only way Tassio is NCC's "full time" QB this season is if Tyler Dicken swallows a stick of dynamite and explodes. Dicken will be a returning starter. Tassio threw a total of 7 passes (3 TDs) last season, and I believe the majority of his passes were thrown out of the wildcat formation. Additionally, its doubtful John Thorne's 1st choice would be to employ a senior as a 1st year starter (1 and done) at the QB position as opposed to a returning starter who will still have 2 years left after this one. Its likely that Dicken's chief competition will be Stanek who will probably be the primary backup. Tassio will occasionally line up in the QB position, but normally only in a wildcat situation. Remember also, Tassio is a proven runner having amassed 854 yards and 10 TDs last year. Both marks were good for 2nd on the team.  He also registered the Cardinal's longest run from scrimmage of 80 yards.

Stanek might start out as a back-up, but I see both getting plenty of playing time.

In addition, per the CCIW football rules (at least from several years ago, they may have changed but the football handbook is no longer on the CCIW website) November games must be played at the 1 PM time slot.

Does anyone know the rationale behind this?  Is it weather-related?  I'm sure there is one but am genuinely curious as to what it might be.

My guess is that it would be light related.  The end of October usually marks the end of Daylight Savings time.  Since this concept was likely conceived when most CCIW stadiums didn't have lights, they probably wanted to ensure that they didn't run out of daylight before the end of the game.

79jaybird

I remember an EC/MU game at Lindsay Field a few years ago where I overheard in the booth the SID talking to the local HS because their field had lights, and Lindsay's didn't. There was a lightning delay which pushed back the game from resuming, and then the 4th quarter was battling the remaining daylight available.
