Loved the article on the undersized RB.

Where did Williams' brother land?

His brother Josh ended up at UWW's camp.

Actually - CCIW fans will likely see quite a bit of both Williams brothers this year...Go Jays.

Something tells me you have insider information.

While NC losing is quite a stunner,  it is not the end of the world for NC.  In year's past they have lost an early tilt only to on to the 1st or 2nd rounds of the playoffs.  Plus, last I checked, any UW school is twice, if not three times as talented as the likes of a Benedictine, Loras, Olivet, Aurora, etc.

36-0 well it's nice to win a lopsided affair and pitch a shutout against a creampuff, but that is just it- a creampuff.  If I'm EC, I take the W in the standings, but know Trine and NC in CCIW week 1 will be much tougher.

Losing when you should have won is just plain stupid. However, it seems to be the NC theme in recent history. Yesterday, everything that could have gone wrong with the NC offense did. Time to regroup and win next week.

* T.J. Stinde: 17 carries, 135 yards, 3 TD
* Rob Gallik: 18-26, 214 yards, 2 TD
* Joe Musso: 7 catches, 49 yards
* Tate Musselman: 3 catches, 76 yards, 1 TD

- First Downs: IWU 22, Aurora 9
- Total Yards: IWU 474, Aurora 197
- T.O.P.: IWU 34:32, Aurora 25:28

It looks like the Titans took care of business yesterday.  With T.J. Stinde back, it seems IWU has a very balanced and very powerful offense.  Stinde has a chance to be a great player this year.

On the other side of the ball, while there are many new faces, it sounds like IWU has been able to plug a lot of talented guys in who had been waiting their turn behind that talented group that graduated last year.  The defense gave up just one score yesterday (Aurora's other coming on a pick 6) -- while AU is certainly not a power, it would not have been a surprise to see IWU's new defensive unit struggle a little bit yesterday in the opener.

The Titans should very much be in the middle of the 2012 CCIW title race.  It seems to me like the Titans have very few substantial holes.

Can anybody give me an idea of the "average" number of newcomers (freshmen and transfers) that show up for the beginning of fall camp that don't, for whatever reason, make it to the opening roster?

Langhorst_Ghost

Strong opening showing for the Jays in Dubuque Saturday.  Impressive efforts from that veteran o-line and scottie (4 tuddies) and an aggressive approach from the re-vamped secondary led the way.  The depth that Coach Lester and his staff have developed down the roster was well-represented, with the EC 2s and 3s contolling the 2nd half of the game against the DuHawks' starters.

Obviously Loras is not NCC, not even close - the coaches and players understand what's ahead on the schedule.  Loras was on the scheule this Saturday, handling their business against the DuHawks was priority number one - focus/film work/gameplan now shifts to Trine.

Not in pads Saturday in Iowa, but should get caught up to speed in the offense quickly with his older brother as a mentor.

The "average" number would vary as some schools have roster limits and other do not.

Okay, give me a ballpark number (or percentage) for, say, NCC and NPU. (Or any other specific CCIW school.)

NCC brought in 51 freshman recruits/transfers this year.
44 of the 51 are listed on the varsity roster.
However, the varsity roster lists 118 players as of yesterday's opening date.

86.3% of the recruits/transfers made the opening day roster.
37.3% of the opening day roster are freshmen/new transfers.

The question, of course, is how many of the 37.3% play meaningful minutes.   ;)

Sorry to be late but here is a recap of Wheaton's win on Thursday night vs. Benedictine

-Meador 8-16-1 133 yds 2 TD's
-Roberts 14-18-0 156 yds 3 TD's
-Peter Jarrett 13 rush, 107 yds 2 TD's 8.2 ypc
-Jutstin Swider 13 rush, 94 yd's 7.2 ypc
-Mark Hiben 7 catches 72 yds
-Morgan Cook 5 catches 102 yds

John  Borsellino 16 rush, 27 yds, 1.1 ypc
Ben Lockett (D3.com AA HM) 2 assisted tackles

Wheaton 545 yds to Benedictine 178
Wheaton 7.5 yards per rush to Benedictine 1.5
Wheaton 2 penalties

Overall a great start against a bad team. The thing to take away here is Wheaton did not put themselves in bad positions with penalties or poor execution. The Wheaton offense is going to be very dangerous this year. Last year they simply had no running game and it put a lot of pressure on their passing attack. This year they have a stable of talented RB's (Jarrett, Swider and Velling) and should be very balanced. Their receiving corps is talented and deep. Mark Hiben is 6'4" 208 lbs and runs a sub 4.5 40. He is a division I caliber player at a D3 school. I can't imagine many teams guarding him 1 on 1. As we saw Thursday, Hiben had 7 catches in the first half. The second half Benedictine double him most of the time and Morgan Cook had 5 grabs. The Thunder receiving corps goes Hiben 6-4 208, Cook 6-4 227, Thorson 6-6 240.

Defensively I think the Thunder have 4 solid, physical LB's. Anderson and Dandsdill are fast and physical, which they lacked last year. Cook and Vargyas are smart, physical safeties. The question mark on this Thunder team will be depth on the O/D Line. If the Thunder can run the ball and stop the run, they will be hard to beat. I don't see Wheaton being tested in the pre-season (@Albion, @Luther) or early in the conference season (@Augie, vs Carthage) so the key is for them to stay healthy and become more and more efficient as the heart of the CCIW schedule comes around in mid October.

the cciw doesn't have roster limits, so for the bigger school maybe between 5-15, the smaller schools probably much less.

Who were the injured starters for NCC yesterday? I am very surprised to see them throw the ball 35 times (in the rain) with less than 50% completion percentage. 6 turnovers is the story as they led to directly to 13 of the  21 UWL points as well as 2 more in the red zone. Stanek had 4 of the 6 turnovers with 3 picks and a fumble. With Tassio and Kukuc I would have expected NCC to run the ball 60 times and pass it about 12-15 times. They were 35 pass and 43 runs.

NCC doesn't have it any easier as they host #18 Redlands (whom they opened last year with a loss in California).

I was surprised they didn't run it more, but the story of the game was turn-overs. Without those they win by at least 2 scores. Starting center(not sure who else on O), 2 DL and LB. Next week doesn't get any easier and hopefully thet can pull out the win. The D did more than enough yesterday to get the W. Time for the O to get it together.
