However,  This is not the 1 or 2 slot Wheaton team that we have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.  Just because Elmhurst came up with a big HC win today, I still would be hesitant to call them a 1 or 2 team.

I agree.  I see Wheaton ending up 6-4 this year.

Game over. Elmhurst wins 35-30.

Games ends on offensive pass interference on pass to Elmhurst 12 yard line.

Wheaton dominates the 2nd half offensively, but Elmhurst makes the big plays when they count - pick 6, and stops Wheaton on 4th and 1 from 3.

Roberts with 250 yards passing in 2nd half, Wheaton with 2 RB's with over 100 yards, but it was not enough due to hole in 1st half.

Wheaton is just a different team when they play in Elmhurst it seems.

Wheaton has trouble on the road here and at Il Wesleyan for years.  I didn't go to today's game and Wheaton has beaten Elmhusrt every time I have gone and lost every time I haven't.  I guess Ive become a fan like every player is with lucky socks etc..
Congratulations to Elmhurst they came with a game plan and executed it.  Makes Wheatons playoff hopes pretty dim. Maybe if they can win the rest of the conference games theirs a chance.  But we do play North Central in Napperville again like last year.

Illinois Wesleyan 3-0 (@ WC, @ NCC, vs AC, @ EC)  W  L  W W
North Central 3-0 (@ CC, vs IWU, vs WC, @ AC)  W  W   W  W
Elmhurst 2-1 (@ MU, vs NPU, @ CC, vs IWU)  W  W W L
Wheaton 2-1 (vs IWU, vs MU, @ NCC, vs NPU) L W L W

JUST MY INITIAL GUT FEELING AND WHERE THE TEAMS ARE AT ON THE TOP 4

Carthage 1-2
Augustana 1-2
Millikin 0-3  DECEIVING 0-3 B/C THIS IS A DANGEROUS 0-3 TEAM ESPECIALLY AT HOME
North Park 0-3

IWU hasn't won at Wheaton since 1996 and most of the games haven't been close.  Now way it happens next week.  This is still a very good Wheaton team-- and that's a credit to Elmhurst.

Games played in the past obviously won't have any bearing on the IWU @ Wheaton game next weekend.  In terms of match ups between these two teams (in 2012), what makes you think there is "no way" IWU will win?

WOW, EC over WC, 35-30.  Must be very tough to put up over 550 yards of total offense and still lose the game.  EC D must have been special at the end.

Big Big loss for WC, to say the least.  EC gets one of their big breakthrough wins.  Congrats to EC.

IWU70

Actually it was 596 yards of offense. 333 passing, 263 rushing.

Some big individual games:
Scottie Williams with 179 yards on 31 carries.
Mark Hiben 8 catches for 198 yards.
Charlie Velling 112  yards on 11 carries
Peter Jarrett 103 yards on 18 carries.

Legit D1 receiver.  Size, speed, hands, smarts (well that isn't needed for most D1).  Only a sophomore.  If he stays healthy, his numbers will be unreal.

It's a good question though.  Did he really not have any offers out of high school??

Stated the obvious last week.  If Wheaton continued the turnovers, it would cost them against the better CCIW teams.

Today only 2 official turnovers, but they were killers.  A third play is logically a turnover.

#1.  With Elmhurst leading 14-10 and Wheaton driving, Roberts completes a 17 yard pass to the Elmhurst 24.  Instead of being in FG range with a 1st down, Wheaton fumbled on the play and Elmhurst returns it 45 yards to the Wheaton 33.  5 plays later Elmhurst extends their lead to 21-10.  Huge momentum swing, ultimately a huge point swing.

#2. With Elmhurst leading 28-24 (having just regained the lead after 2 quick Roberts to Hiben TD's), again Wheaton is driving.  Roberts throws his 2nd INT of the year (against 18 TD's) and it is returned 57 yards for a TD.  Elmhurst returns to their 11 point lead as quickly as Wheaton erased the 11 point half time deficit for a temporary lead.

#3.  While not a turnover on the stats, it is turning the ball over on downs.  With Elmhurst leading 35-30 and 5 minutes remaining, Wheaton has a 4th and 1 at the Elmhurst 3.  Wheaton loses 4 yards.  Game over.

That my friends is how you can have 600 yards offense and lose.  Against good teams 3 plays of that caliber will doom you or steal a victory (depending on your perspective.)

Great win Jays!

Jaybird can we enjoy this for more then 5 seconds after the game before you write a post about being 3rd and "the way you see it." Maybe this is what ghost means.

Damn kid just enjoy today's win.

Congrats to my Jays and the other winners today in conference.

Congrats to Elmhurst on the win.  But it does not make them a CCIW contender just yet.

Top CCIW teams do not surrender 600 yards offense.  Elmhurst has a potent, dangerous offense, but their defense is not yet to a contender level.  That is why NCC spanked Elmhurst and why IWU likely will as well.

Wheaton while a very good team, is not at the level of NCC, especially this year.  While Wheaton's defense was nationally ranked in several categories, I don't think it was a complete picture.  While playing well, it has something to do with who they have played thus far.

I believe the defense will struggle against NCC and IWU, and possibly Millkin.

Any rumors that d1 is belatedly discovering him?  Or any insights as to whether he would listen if they did?

I can not shed any light or answer any of these questions with any certainty.

Each year I'm just a bit further removed from being "in the know" or with having insider information.  I usually hear news from those who do, but with regards to Hiben I don't know what his D1 options were coming into Wheaton, nor if he is getting any looks now.  I would guess he had some smaller D1 options out of high school and D1 schools would be crazy not to give him a shot now.

I have heard he is loving his time at Wheaton, for more than just football.

Maybe he wanted to play for only Wheaton.  A legacy, perhaps?  Maybe the family has donated to Billy Graham Ministries and now to Samaritin's Purse?
