CardinalAlum- Agreed. Since Tim Lester has come into the picture the Jays have been stronger.  Coaching has a lot to do with it. I would say 40% of it is coaching 60% of it is the players executing.  In between the 40-60 you need the players gelling together the confidence/trust between player-coach and visa versa has to be strong.

The big question and what I will be paying attention to next year is,  how will Elmhurst replace Williams and will they be able to sesstain competitiveness we have seen this year?  Or, is this just a 1-year wonder with luck proving to be the reason they pulled out 3 games this year?  Yet to be seen.  For right now,  Elmhurst is in a good position.

You don't think Josh steps in and replaces Scottie without skipping a beat? Isn't Josh bigger and faster?

I don't know if he'll duplicate big brother's career, but after seeing him last Saturday I'm sold on Josh Williams. I overheard one NPU coach comment after the game that he thinks Josh has a higher ceiling than Scottie. That's a scary thought to contemplate if you're a player, coach, or follower of one of the seven other teams in the league.

Losing Josh Williams was the beginning of the end for UWW this year. Ok, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but I for one was sold on his potential long before fall camp started.  I was sold based upon comments made about him by knowledgeable and experienced high school coaches and by the talent that was obvious on film.
In a situation like this the real story is probably only known by a select few.  The pedestrian version is that he wasn't happy burried on the depth chart- and I mean burried behind several other freshman.  The IL class 8A All-State running back burried behind several freshman- wow!  Who knows how it will all turn out, but I convinced myself that he would make us all forget about Coppage.

This will be the big question.  We have examples of both directions on this.

NCC is the perfect example of reaching a point of sustained, conference championships with no rebuilding necessary (now they need to translate that success to post-season).Carthage is an example of the 1-year wonder.  True Carthage has had competitive teams, but only 1 conference championship and playoff team under Rucks - 2004.  All other years they have had at least 3 conference losses.
That's for sure! This year would be a great year to start.

I know I've said this before, but I'm sold on NCC-  They just need to get their mental s**t together.  Having seen UWW and so many of their playoff games including Mt, IMO NCC is more than talented enough to beat any of them (disclaimer- I haven't seen Mt this year).  It's mental, not physical.

I've thought this since they played UWW in 2010. I think they just might be ready to make a statement this season. They seem to have become much more focused since UWL. First things first, Beat Wheaton! Ding, ding, ding!  Almost game day!!

Great post Emma.  I think the word that I saw in a prior post was "workmanlike".  When I think about the Vikings West team from the 1980's, I think about how they defeated their opponents in such "workmanlike" manner.  They kept hammering away and scored more often than not.  They never got too excited one way or another.  They just beat you -- every time.  This is really the first year I can honestly say that I have noticed that same trait at NCC.  Like the old AC teams, they do not get flustered if they don't score on a drive.  They just know that they will get you next time.  They get large leads, pull the starters, send in the kids, and move on to the next game.  They do not appear to be looking past anyone and are living in the moment.  The focus level appears to be quite high.  While there have certainly been highly focused Cardinals over the past decade (think DPOY Wenger), this whole team is that way from the coaches on down.  There is better and more consistent play-calling, better clock management, and better execution.  They certainly have become "workmanlike" in their approach.  Whether they win or lose on Saturday (and I do think they will win), they will stay focused toward their goals.

Instead of worrying about next year can we enjoy the ride this year first?

One of the reasons I am not concerned  is quality of recruiting that Elmhurst has done without winning at this level. Their staff are excellent recruiters and when we finish this out, I believe it will help them capitalize on their success. That will allow for sustained competitiveness in the upper third of the conference.

Again it comes down to playing one game at a time and it's time to get CC. We have to finish!

Totally agree, let's appreciate 2012 in the moment.  It's become a cliche in athletics, but Coach Lester's approach is truly a "lunch pail" type of attitude - every Saturday is the most important one on the schedule that week.  Given the success and the increased media attention the team has seen this season, Lester and the staff (along with the 20+ seniors, including Scottie) have kept the 'Jays grounded and focused on the task at hand...this week's opponent.  Big-time credit goes to the leadership (coaches and players) inside the program.

As Scottie was quoted in the Sun Times: ''This year we're focusing more on ourselves, playing what we call 'a blue-collar mentality.' Just playing every play for each play, not worrying about the end score and knowing that one play at a time is how you're going to win the game.''
It's a Great Day to be a Jay!

Those were the dark years, nearly a decade ago now.  With much prayer support from my family I have overcome that personal struggle, yet you continue to bring that up for the world to hear!   ::)

btw:  I'll be coming out with an autobiography in the next 18 months about overcoming MCSAD (Multiple CCIW School Affiliation Disorder).  Wheaton, North Park, North Central... I didn't know who I was.

I thought the most valuable asset I can offer my employer is my infectious personality.

Come on, Mugs, just admit you have a split personality!  :)

Sounds like a great game WC vs. NCC on Saturday.  I say NCC by at least 2 TDs.

Sure hope our Titans rebound, get their act and confidence back together after the NCC drubbing, and give Tyler Hook alot more help and support in his second CCIW start at QB.  The D has to play like they've been playing before the NCC game, and contain the much improving Doggies.  Need a good win on Senior Day, to send off a great group of Titan seniors.

IWU basketball Green/White scrimmage following football on Saturday @4:30 p.m. @The Shirk.  Basically two weeks of football remaining for most teams, two weeks 'til opening tip off for the basketball season.
