Does anyone else think the "bowl season" has gotten completely out of hand?

NCF,

Yes, the number of bowls and even the names of them has caused the post-season opportunity to be just another game. IMHO, reduce the number in the coming years where the prestige of going to a bowl game really matters. Although that is unlikely since the money now drives so much and most schools want and need the extra funds if possible!

Hey raider68, agree with you on all points. Can you imagine if six wins made a D3 team play-off eligible?

Mike Conway isn't showing up at North Park empty-handed. His older son Dakota, who was a redshirt freshman WR for D2 California (PA) this past year, was an All-State football player in high school. That's in Pennsylvania, where being an All-State high school football player really means something. And his younger son T.D. is a 6'5, 230 QB who redshirted for California (PA) this past season. From what I've been told, part of the draw of being the head coach at NPU for Conway, who was California (PA)'s defensive coordinator, is the chance to coach his sons.

Two players can't work miracles:) They need a couple of good classes to get that program back on track.

The words "back on track" imply that North Park football was actually "on track" at some point in the past, which -- considering that NPU hasn't had a winning football season since the Beatles released the White Album -- is really stretching it.

I agree with your point that NPU needs a whole lot more than two good players, though, and I really wasn't implying that this was some sort of cue that the Vikings would now be a dominant football team. I was simply relaying the stuff about Conway's two sons for general information purposes.

Yep, I could watch in the 70s and 80s but this new format with bowls spread out and teams waiting 5 weeks to play is ridiculous.  I know many kids want to play for the big schools but when they get older they will appreciate how special D3 is.  I'm sure their are coaches and players who could be in D1 but prefer the atmosphere of division 3.  Thanks to Pat and staff who have this great web site for those of us who are fans of quality student athletes and their accomplishments on and off the field.

You could eliminate many bowls by just raising the minimum # of wins from 6 to 8.  Why does a 6-4 or 500 team need to go to a Bowl? Plus nowadays (X) company fields (X) amount of dough, to get their name corresponding to a game.  Makes me appreciated the longstanding bowls.

Eight wins makes sense-which is why  it won't ever happen. Most of the games have been sloppy as well. Too much time between the end of the season and bowl games.

No team should be able to go to a bowl game unless they can lose that game and still have a winning record.

You should have to be at least 2 games over .500 at the conclusion of the regular season to be bowl eligible. I saw at least one bowl game this year where one of the teams was below .500 going into the bowl game, and that is ridiculous.

I agree with you guys.  That said, it is somewhat ironic that a few of the bowls with these teams that are 6-6 have actually turned out to be some of the really good bowl games this year.  Still, agree that 6-6 records are not worthy of a bowl game.  Michigan State went this year and while it was a good win for the program (and some argue that it is a neat experience for the players, which it is), nonetheless they lost a ton of $ by simply going to that particular bowl.  So if schools are going to do that, I really don't want to hear any whining about how tough it is for them economically regarding their programs. :o :P ;)  Indeed, that is ridiculous.

I'm so glad Division III has a real playoff (even four teams isn't legitimate in my view).
