I saw something that said Coach Adams at Elmhurst is joining the Syracuse staff. Big blow to Elmhurst if this is true.

Check the item near the top in this link.

The discussion about this in chatroom syracusefans.com, which gave a big thumbs-down to SU's hiring of Joe Adam, included a post that said, "All 12 Elmhurst fans must be really bummed about this." It reminds me again why I've grown to really dislike D1 sports.

Oh come on, you have to admit it is kind of funny ::) ;D ;D

From another D3 fan it'd be funny. From a Syracuse fan, who most likely knows next to nothing about D3, it just drips contempt.

Gotta let most comments about D3 from those who have no clue (which is why they are D1 ;D  ;D) roll off your back.

Oh, it will. But some comments roll more slowly than others. ;)

Greg, but what can you expect from folks who think something called a 'garbage plate' is fine dining! ;D

(Actually, I've had the garbage plate - pretty darned good!)

Wrong upstate city, Chuck. Rochester is the home of the garbage plate. Syracuse is known for salt potatoes, and that's about it in terms of regional specialty cuisine as far as Syracuse (aka the Salt City) is concerned.

(BTW, salt potatoes are delicious.)

Indeed, Coach Adam is moving to a new role in Syracuse.  For those of you who don't know, there is the WMU--now Syracuse-- connection pipeline.   Great opportunity for Coach Adam and he will flourish there.  He is a player's coach and a stand up guy.  I wish him the best.

While this is a great opportunity for Adam,  this really puts Elmhurst in a bind.  IMO, one characteristic of a solid program is longevity and recognition of their HC and upper level coaching staff.  I.E.  Eash, Swider, even Rucks.   Recruits often look for a solid foundation with their coaching staff.  Many don't want to sign on,  and then in 2 years have to adjust to a new regime etc.

Hopefully Elmhurst can get a new HC ASAP and Adam's successor can pick up right where he left off.

You can't fault the guy for wanting to make a move. Any possible replacements from the current coaching staff?

NCF- Agreed.  A chance to go to a historic program and coach with a friend/colleague you are familiar with,  it is easy to see why he took the position.

I am not sure. I have a couple of ideas of who might be brought in for an interview.  My gut feeling is it is probably going to be somebody associated with program currently.

Recruiting circumstances will be shaky enough for Elmhurst as it is, what with the 'jays now looking ahead to playing under their third head coach in three years. Having seen what's gone on with North Park men's basketball as it just went through the same three-year coaching turnstile, I can vouch for how disastrous this can be for recruiting. I think that EC might've allayed some of those problems last year by hiring internally. But Elmhurst was lucky to have an internal candidate in Joe Adam who was worthy of being promoted to the head job. The question is: Does EC have another assistant coach who can reasonably be construed as the best candidate available for head coach? Two straight years of internal promotion is asking a lot from a small  pool of Elmhurst assistant coaches.

I understand the temptation to hire from within, given the need to alleviate recruiting turmoil. But another internal promotion might not be the best move for Elmhurst in terms of actually running the program, especially in the long term, unless Elmhurst really does have yet another guy who is as capable of stepping up to occupy the big office as Joe Adam was.

Another option, albeit a long shot and I would highly doubt this may happen, but perhaps AD Paul Krohn might return to coaching?  Doubtful but stranger things have happened.

Elmhurst historically has struggled to attain a consistent high level of conference play.  We need a motivated coach who is looking to build a team up and continue to nourish it one the blocks are in place.  Somebody who is familiar with the local recruiting seen and can consistently bring in X number of quality recruits.  I.E. Thorne knew the DuPage Co. pipelines perfectly.

I played the devil's advocate and feared Elmhurst would be in a similar boat as Carthage a few years ago, regressing back to the middle of the pack.  The blue Kool-Aiders doubted me,  but reality is Elmhurst has some major work to do now off the field, to be competitive again on the field.
