Too much tuition discounting, making offers to get in a class, is what has a lot of liberal arts institutions with a high price point in trouble now.  Some have gone to different admission/tuition models and some have had to cut back on faculty and academic programs.  It's going to get more ugly as time goes by and the high school cohort demographic works against the institutions.

#7 UW-Platteville invades Naperville and #5 North Central tomorrow for a battle scheduled to begin at 6:00. The heavy thunderstorms predicted for tomorrow PM may ultimately have something to say about the actual eventual start time.

tomorrow?
Isn't the game Sat?
Sat 9.20.14 6:00 p.m.
AO went to print about five hours earlier than he had intended.  Like most Cardinals fans, he is just trying to get to Game Day a little quicker!

Yes, the first home game of the year brings about an extra dose of excitement.
Actually, a large part of my wishful thinking that the game was tomorrow stems from the fact that I have to spend the entire AM tomorrow helping my better half clean the house. This in preparation for the arrival of several members of her family tomorrow PM for an event they are all attending in Chicago on Saturday. Just trying to put all that vacuuming, bed making, and other associated chores out of my mind by skipping tomorrow, and proceeding directly to Go Saturday.  :D

Some good field level views in this Wheaton v Kzoo highlight video.  My favorite is at about 1:08.  Really shows the height advantage IMO.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQw-fdLthfc&list=UUc7gBoPNxd3EmNnzGNtKOYw

IWU down 7-0 at the half in Iowa vs. Simpson.

Wheaton 17
UWEC  0

Final

Wheaton 362 yds
Butler 16-29 209 yds 1 TD
Geary 21 rush 84 yds
Dandsill 18 tackls (15 solo)
Ashby 11 tackles (1 pick 6)

UWEC 237 yds
22-35 154 yds QB-munger

Wheaton led this game 3-0 at half after messing up their FG operation for various reasons 3x in the first half. They settled for FG attempts when drives stalled several times. They finally connected in the 4th quarter when Bulter connected with Mitchell for a TD and then Ashby added a pick 6 in the 4th to seal the victory. Offensively Wheaton struggled today. Part of that is the fact they are still playing 3 quarterbacks. Bowers and Peltz spelled Butler in the first half several times after first downs and in at least 3 cases the result was 3rd and long for Reece Bulter. I don't see any different packages they are running with either of the other QB's that makes this necessary and it seems to stall the offense. On the flip side, Reece Butler is not very accurate with the long ball at times. The Offensive line continues to play well and is the big reason the Thunder are 3-0 heading into conference play. Geary is a great North South runner but his pad level is high and he fumbled the ball 2x today, losing 1 down inside the 10 yd line. I'd like to see more of Puknaitis.

Defensively the Thunder were outstanding. Dansdill is as good a linebacker as the CCIW has seen since Wenger at NCC. Although a different type of player than Wenger, he does remind me of John Munch from the mid 1990's at IWU. He has a great nose for the ball and can cover many wideouts man to man. He now has 45 tackles after 3 games. As good as Dansdill was today, Ashby stole the show with his 11 tackle performance when he returned an INT for the clinching TD in the 4th.

I am not sure the Thunder are good enough on offense yet but they play defense and their OLine is very good, which will keep them in most games. On to the conference season.

Final from St. Louis:

Washington MO 24
North Park 19

Tough day for the Vikings. Too many dropped passes again, and three costly defensive penalties on third downs when the Vikings D should've come off the field after stopping the Bears but didn't.

Drew Walkington (97 yds rushing) was a bright spot today for the Park, as was Devin Childress (12 catches, 99 yds and a TD).

NPU has to regroup over the off week, because the climb gets much steeper than it's been thus far: Wheaton and North Central will be NPU's first two CCIW opponents.

Titan Q

Simpson 13
IWU 3

I wasn't able to watch the game, but listened to most of it.  After Simpson went up 7-0 in the 1st quarter, they controlled the rest of the game.  IWU had a number of good scoring opportunities, but struggled to do anything in the redzone...and had 3 costly turnovers.  Simpson seemed to take the Titans out of everything they wanted to do offensively.

Simpson had a number of long, time-consuming drives.  Once IWU got down 2 scores, it felt over because of Simpson's ability to control the ball.  Simpson also converted a number of big 3rd & shorts and 4th & shorts in this game.

The Titans don't seem to have any running game right now, which surprises me.  It seems like their offensive line and RB Anfernee Roberts should be good enough to do some damage.  No sure what is going on there.

IWU QB Jack Warner wasn't very good today either - sounded like he made a number of costly mistakes.

This was IWU's first non-conference loss since 2007.  Even after a poor showing in Iowa today, I still feel pretty good about the Titans competing for that CCIW #2 spot.  We'll see.

I watched most of the second half of the IWU game. It seemed to me like IWU didn't have any rythm on offense. Their defense played great from what I could see but on offense the only thing that worked was quick throws to a primary receiver or Jack Warner running plays, called or impromptu. When they got down to the redzone before their FG it was on the legs of Warner almost exclusively.

I agree.  Everyone is playing for 2nd place.  NC 28 UW-P 7.

No, at worst there are 2 teams playing for 2nd place (if you are an NCC fan) but there is decidedly a top 3 in the CCIW this year. I don't think we know how big the separation between #1 and #2 is (though many will say they do know) but clearly there are 3 teams and then everyone else.

NCC dismantled UWP today, they rushed for 303 yds on the ground averaging 7.6 yds per carry. While I know the NCC ground attack is formidable, I have a hard time believing UWP is a top 25 team, let alone a top 10 team, giving up 7.6 yds per carry.

I disagree.  It is a two horse race (yes the two teams playing for that Bell---which actually is owned by NC, but more on that during Bell week.  ;) )  And, I see The Crusaders as having a puncher's chance.  Let's be honest.  The CCIW isn't exactly at it's peak.

USee

I agree the CCIW is decidedly down this year. And we do know that Wheaton, IWU and NCC are the 3 best teams this year in the CCIW. That's pretty clear. I just don't know how big the spread is between the 3. While the game tonight vs UWP was a convincing win, I am not convinced UWP is a top 10 team. And while Wheaton struggled today on offense with UWEC, I am equally not convinced that team (picked to finish last in the WIAC by D3.com) won't beat some top tier WIAC schools this year. At this point the most likely scenario is that NCC, IWU, and Wheaton are all undefeated until they start playing each other, which happens over a three week period in October.
