Final at McCully: Wheaton 31, Elmhurst 0

Thanks GS.  That is what happens when a flood of trick or treaters arrive at door and I hastily hit post.
That explains it.  I thought it was because Wheaton was so dominant, the Thunder didn't allow Elmhurst any score at all, not even a zero.

In other news, AndOne's team won a big game, prompting his predictable reappearance on the boards.

Sorry to disappoint you but I could care less what a bottom dwelling coach thinks of ANY team. The games will be played on the field. But I guess that is part of it--lack of credibility. And, I love coaches who speak out, so long as you have credibility--- Steve Spurrier comes to mind, but some others need to focus on being asked to return next year (probably to the dismay of their fan base).

Seems to me that you must care what he says, since you continue to address it and defend a very "typical" AndOne post.  For someone who doesn't care, this is your third post discussing it.  If AndOne wants some analysis related to the comment that Coach Etherton made, here it is:  Despite how good or bad Millikin is, they were ahead of NCC going into the 4th quarter of their game 21-14.  Going into the 4th quarter of the game against IWU, Millikin was down 47-13.  Based on that "analysis", I would say that Coach E's comments would seem to be pretty reasonable. The beauty of it is that NCC and IWU still have to play so we will see if his comments are accurate or not.

From Millikin coach Patric Etherton:

"I think Wesleyan is better than North Central," Etherton said. "They have a very talented running back group and they have a big line up front."

But Wesleyan's biggest playmaker is receiver Artie Checchin, who Etherton called the "best receiver in the conference."

Genius.  Pure genius.

North Central 33 IWU 15 in Bloomington.

Yes, Augie6, the beauty was indeed in the fact that the two teams still had to play.  ;)
And, also that the reasonableness of Coach Etherton's statement can be found in the game's final outcome.  :)   8-)

As TQ indicated, the Green team came out throwing today, a strategy he indicated he did not care for, implying he would have preferred they give the ball to RB Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore as opposed to the initial ariel attack. However, from observing several of this season's previous NCC contests, I think the initial Wesleyan strategy was proper as attacking the relatively young and largely vertically challenged Cardinal secondary has yielded fruitful results to this point in the season. Furthermore, when Mr. S-G did start seeing the pigskin on a more regular basis, one of his "pretty good" plays was a very costly fumble. In truth, while the Redbird offense had several shining moments throughout the battle, the war was principally won by the entire Cardinal defense-D line, backers, and secondary-applying stifling pressure over the course of the entire afternoon, their cumulative effort resulting in limiting their vanquished foes to 184 yards of total offense, an average of only 2.4 yards per play.

Shoemaker-Gilmore rushed for 101 yards on 16 attempts (6.3 per).  Yes he had a costly fumble, but he ran the ball very effectively today and I would have liked to see him get many more carries...especially early.

Yes, overall, Shoemaker-Gilmore had a nice game. Perhaps the basketball equivalent of letting him "get his" while shutting down his comrades?

Ariel is a Millikin reference as MU grads have played the role on Broadway, at Disneyworld and the voice in the animated movie. I am sure that AO would have preferred an NCC grad but it is what it is.

Gregory Sager

Well, if The Little Mermaid was an opera, I'm sure that the role of Ariel would've been sung by an Illinois Wesleyan grad, and that iwu70 would be making a pitch for those opera CDs in here on a weekly basis.

(CCIW football room regulars, please forgive me for importing a CCIW basketball room joke in here.)

Solid win for the Thunder today. Elmhurst had 200 yds offense and Tyler Smith ran for 154 yds, getting 61 on the first play of the . game. He got about 50 more on 2 other plays. Orlando Hernandez, Elmhurst's freshman QB, did not have a great day going 2-9-3 for 18 yds and a pick 6 by Wes Cannonier. The Thunder Offense ran for 256 yds behind 12. Olateju was 126 yds and Bowers ran for 124.

Thunder go to Bloomington this week for what's obviously a huge contest for both teams.

Kiko has laid out the tie breaker. IWU has to win Saturday and they are likely in the playoffs as a Pool C (unless they win by 29 pts). The Thunder, oddly enough, could be in trouble as a Pool C if they lose to the Titans and finish 9-1. In part because they will be behind IWU in the North Region rankings and their profile includes a poor SOS. The NCC win helps them with what is likely to be a win over a regionally ranked opponent. Details will emerge from the Pool C board this week as the NCAA releases their first set of regional rankings this Wednesday.

As poorly as things went for IWU today, they still pretty much control their own destiny.

Yes, it is what it is. So you better ask:

AO   All-American   2005-08-20   2794

what he thinks before you put words in his mouth.

As for me, I'm with Rhett Butler.  ;)  ;D
