Emma,

To answer your question, this is the best team Wheaton has fielded in my 30+ years of watching them and it is driven by their line play and their defense. Now that time includes an 0-6 record to Mt Union where the closest result was 14 pts so take that for what it's worth.

I have seen UWW enough to know what they bring to the table. Their line play on both sides is both fast and physical. their power run game and zone blocking on offense are as good as you will find in D3. The one thing Wheaton has not seen much of is a big, physical run game. North Central is a running team and their OL is similar to UWW but their backfield is fast more than physical. Wheaton hasn't seen anyone with a fast, physical offensive line and a guy like Ratliff running behind it. On defense, UWW is obviously a huge challenge for Wheaton's OL and WR's .

Is Dansdill a LB that runs sideline to sideline making plays like Wenger?
I'm guessing Wheaton does some read option.  UWW struggled defending that last year.

Dandsdill is as good a LB as I have seen in D3. Similar to Wenger in his instincts, probably faster and maybe not as physical. Back to back DPOY in the CCIW hasn't happened since 1997 or so when Jon Munch (IWU LB) won it two times in a row). He is a special LB. All three LB's are fast. The entire defense has speed. Up front the two DT's are Buzz Aldrin and Noah Spielman (son of the former OSU LB) and the DE's are both 2 point stance players. Not a lot of blitzing. Play mostly cover 2 and keep everything in front of them. rarely give up big plays (longest TD this year was 35yds and no other TD plays of more than 19 yds).

Congrats to Matt Snebold of Wheaton as a Gagliardi Finalist!!  Very deserving and definitely got my vote.

Also, a tip of the cap to another nominee, Joe Callahan of Wesley.  Heck of an athlete and humble in my brief dealings with him.

Nice article about:
Ratliffe a workhorse for Warhawks on D3 front page.
http://www.d3football.com/playoffs/2015/uw-whitewater-ratliffe

I saw him drag a group of UWSP defenders 10 yards into the end zone.
Wheaton defenders need to pick him (release his weight) up to tackle him to avoid being  dragged for extra yardage.
They like to run him straight up the center between the guards.  Usually on a slow developing play to allow those huge linemen to form a wedge for him as the play almost always breaks towards the sideline.

I am a big fan of Josh Aldrin but he will have three 300lb linemen in front of him.  Their is the law of diminishing returns if he gets double or triple teamed.  Plugging up the middle will be essential to allow the lbs to make the play and stop the UWW O-line from forming a wedge.

PS
Josh Aldrin could be a twin of a childhood friend of mine (same height, weight, build) who also played at the nose was a great bench presser also like Aldrin who set the bench press record at Wheaton.  We played football together for six years and he was the hardest d-linemen to block as we always were in a draw.  Thats why I comment that the hardest linemen I ever had to block were shorter than me.

Usee, I am intrigued by your comment that North Central's line is similar to UWW.  In what way? Athletically? Schematically? Overall quality?  As far as the tale of the tape, NCC appears to be quite a bit smaller than UWW. Whitewater's LT and RT outweigh NCC's by 35 and 39 pounds respectively.  UWW's center outweighs NCC's by 12 pounds.  The guards are the same.  I know NCC is a great running team, so I definitely think your comment was complimentary towards UW-W (for you posters who think UW-W posters are overly sensitive).  I'm just wondering what similarities you are seeing?

USee

Bleed,

fair question. To be honest, my comment was really meant for less trained eyes than you. Both UWW and NCC are run first type schemes, both of them have similar running plays (though from what I can tell UWW runs a little more power and counter than outside/inside zone) and both have linemen with great feet, excellent technique, that try to punish you off the ball. UWW is definitely bigger and, as a result, more physical up front. They also run a lot more Power G from what I can see, which requires a double team at the point of attack and then a backside pulling guard with a huge TE/FB type blocking kicking out. I would also say UWW's tight ends are much bigger and more physical than anything we have seen.

Wheaton's D has speed and aren't small but the size advantage is clearly toward UWW. Does size trump speed? sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't
