That will never happen. The NCAA would never encroach upon an individual member's prerogatives like that. It completely goes against the grain of what the NCAA is all about. The NCAA can try to shepherd schools into adopting a specific mode of scheduling (e.g., requiring that basketball programs schedule at least half of their games against D3 teams in order to qualify for the D3 tournament), but it has never stood in the way of schools that have wanted to follow their own path in terms of making schedules (Maranatha Baptist is a classic example).

A good local example of the NCAA shepherding schools into a specific mode of scheduling would be how the in-region/out-of-region classification significantly changed how Illinois Wesleyan builds its out-of-conference basketball slate.  The Titans used to play schools like Nebraska Wesleyan and Olivet Nazarene every year... both of those series are long gone from the Titans' schedule.  There was simply too little incentive to play non-D3 or out-of-region games other than to plug holes in the schedule or as special one-offs.

For those who are interested, Sports Illustrated just published an oral history of the 1971 NFL draft that focuses on the half-dozen QBs picked who turned into NFL starters.  Among them is Augustana's Kenny Anderson.

NCC fills out its non-conference schedule  :) with another NAIA school  >:(, Webber International University.

Maybe I missed this part of the discussion but upon further review I see NCC is playing TWO NAIA teams (Robert Morris-Chicago, and Webber Intl). With addition of Carroll to the CCIW that means their ONLY D3 games are the 8 conference games. That's certainly going to make things interesting for seeding, Pool C, etc depending on it all plays out.

And IWU currently has only 9 games on its schedule, with a road game to Nebraska Wesleyan it's sole non-conference matchup.

Same thing with Hope and Calvin, who have been more resistant than Illinois Wesleyan to giving in to the NCAA's attempts to goad them into jettisoning all of their non-D3 contests (although they have both pared them down somewhat in recent years).

NPU has four recruits from Hawai'i and a very large class.  NPU needs defense and a running back though Conway can rely on Conway to Childress all day long.

At this point, I would be happy with being a factor in the CCIW on a year by year basis.  It's been 11 years since the last time Augie has been in the playoffs and 8 years since the have finished in the top two in the CCIW.  Despite their record, I think there were some positive things shown last year and I'm hopeful Augie can build on that, this season.  Pretty good year for the Viking men's teams with championships in Basketball, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track and Baseball.  Now we need to get the football program to that level.

As I said, there's more to come, too.

The NPU coaching staff has put a premium upon recruiting the Aloha State. Not only are there a lot of Hawaiians who are of Samoan or part-Samoan extraction (including current Vikings Chance Maxwell and Allan Lagaaia), but, as was the case with the Samoans, the more Hawaiians you have the easier it is to recruit more of them -- even those who aren't Samoan-Hawaiians.

NPU's also recruiting the Austin, TX area really well over the past couple of years, too. There's going to be a whole bunch of freshmen and sophomores from Round Rock, Pflugerville, Windermere, etc., on next season's roster.

Quote from: markerickson on May 14, 2016, 10:39:28 PMNPU needs defense and a running back though Conway can rely on Conway to Childress all day long.

North Park actually has some good young running backs: Kvonte Spearman averaged 3.5 yards per carry last season, Matthew Chapp averaged 4.4 ypc, and John Wilkinson averaged 5.2. All three were freshmen last year, as was Uluao Letuli, who could be the best of the bunch and who should be back as well after missing all of last season to injury. Of course, you can never have enough RBs, and the Vikes could probably use a power back or two for short-yardage situations (with Filoisamoa Langkilde having graduated yesterday, the only big back the Park has left is rising senior James Herron), but it's certainly not as though the cupboard is bare at NPU.

Getting the O-line in gear to block for these guys, making the right play calls, and having the passing game execute well enough to open up the running game ... those are what the running game needs to succeed more than it does getting in a specific player. However, if an Austin Breunig or a Scottie Williams becomes available, I don't think that Mike Conway will pass him over. ;)

I am guessing that in home visits in Maui are  more enjoyable than in home visits in Moline and Manito come January.

Gregory Sager

True, although in-home visits in Moline and Manito aren't usually complicated by typhoons or volcanic eruptions.

(At least, as far as I know.)
