Mr. Ypsi

Play has resumed in Wheaton after a more than 2-hour delay.  NCC now up 10-0 after 1 quarter.

That lengthy delay raised a question in my mind.  We all know Wheaton won't play on Sundays, but when does Sunday begin for them?  Another delay could easily push this game past midnight.  Would they refuse to play past midnight, or is that just an extension of Saturday night, and Sunday doesn't begin until sunrise (or whenever).  Anyone know their policy?

Mr. Ypsi

NCC pushed the lead to 13-0, but a 34-yard TD pass, Peterson to Roberts, has cut the deficit to 13-7.  Just over a minute to the half.

At least one Wheaton resident will be overjoyed at the postponement. In a rather bizarre incident in the second quarter a lady, who evidently lives very close to the Wheaton football field, chose to demonstrate her displeasure over the fact that the game was still being played after around 10:00 by walking onto the field with her dog. Members of the Wheaton administration confronted her quickly and signaled to the Wheaton police, stationed at the other end of the field, to indicate their intervention was needed. The gendarmes approached the woman and her canine companion and, after a short discussion, escorted them from the field without further incident.

* Kudos to the Wheaton sideline reporter who quickly determined the nature of the disturbance and reported as such.  :)

The game was called/suspended at approx 10:30. At the time, the Wheaton broadcasters, top notch in their description of the action, reported that the game likely would not have been able to be completed tonight anyway. Evidently, Wheaton has some type of ordinance that prohibits the field lights being on past midnight. Odds are that with the halftime break still to take place before 2nd half action commenced, the game couldn't have been fully completed by midnight anyway. Plus, the Thor Guard System, which signaled a very lengthy first half delay after a lightening strike, was apparently ready to go off again.  :)

Well, I guess that answers my question about Wheaton playing past midnight, at least for home football games.  Anyone know the answer to my broader question about Wheaton's refusal to play on Sundays?  (If a game (whatever sport) runs past midnight Saturday, are they gone, or does 'Sunday' refer to sunrise (or whatever) and past midnight is still part of Saturday night?)  And (just occurred to me) if playing elsewhere, is it midnight Saturday local time, or Wheaton time?

These religious prohibitions can occasionally get quite messy!  The Ramadan fast (sunrise to sunset) for example would cause mass death of Muslims above the arctic circle when Ramadan happens to fall in summer months - I've learned that under those circumstances local Muslims (not many above the arctic circle, but a few!) observe Mecca hours.

Ypsi,

In most cases where a no-Sunday play policy is in place there is some sort of clause regarding special circumstances that covers delays like injuries, overtimes and weather delays.

In Wheaton's situation that won't come into play most likely because of agreements made with the city to be able to install lights in an area that can be defined as residential for people not affiliated with the college. This happens all the time with the addition of lights or new field construction. This goes back a few days to the discussion on landlocked campuses. You would be amazed at the rancor of people who live near a college athletic facility that might have the lights on 3-4 nights a year past a certain time. It is one of the hardest things to navigate in the zoning approval process.

The fact that the lady protested the lights by taking her dog out on someone else's private property, on a turf field in the middle of a long lasting and at times pretty intense lightning storm sort of showcase the level of rational approach to the whole thing.

Millikin came from behind to topple Augie in Rock Island, 28-27, on a field goal with 61 seconds remaining.

The game started at 1 pm and finished at 7:20.

Yes, I know for a fact that Wheaton has made an exception once or twice to the no-Sunday-play policy due to extenuating circumstances like the kind Joe mentioned. The people who run Wheaton College respect the concept of Sunday rest, but we're not talking about a religious stricture that's anywhere within a million miles of being on a par with the Orthodox Jewish observance of the Sabbath or the Muslim observance of Ramadan in terms of legalistic rigor.

Very true. A similar ordinance in the precinct in which Holmgren Athletic Complex is located forces North Park's game staff to cease using the P.A. after 10 pm, and the stadium lights have to be off at 11 pm. And, believe me, the people in the houses and condos across N. Albany Ave. from the stadium will call the cops to complain if the P.A. is still on at 10:01.

I've worked a number of baseball games that have run past 10 pm, and it's eerie to see them take place with no sounds other than the faint voices from the dugout. No walk-up music, no half-innings music, no announcements of batter or score or pitching change, nothing.

Good solid Homecoming win for the TITANS, before a very good crowd.  Wayne Messmer singing the national anthem.  30-0 always good.  :)

IWU D doing their thing again, with the second shut-out of the season.  Hassan with another terrific game.  But, the entire D unit played well with many important plays, stops.  O was pretty lame in the first half with the score only IWU 7 Carroll 0 at the half.  The Titans got it going a bit more in the second, with three TD passes by Bauer and a better rhythm, several long, time-consuming drives.  Morgan Alexander continues to impress, though the Carroll D had a good plan to try to stop him.  He would have had another 100+ yard game, save again for several decent runs being called back by holds.  Titans really gotta clean that up somehow.

6-1 at this point feels pretty nice.  I think this next game at home vs. Carthage will be the greatest challenge, most difficult test for going 9-1, having a chance to get to the post-season.  MU will also be a good game.

Seems the NCC-WC game is the game that will never end.

Great to see so many friends, classmates, international students, returning faculty and friends at IWU for Homecoming.  We missed you Ypsi.

Wayne Messmer's master classes, talks to students, his singing and performing, and the story of his long, compelling, and inspiring journey back from being shot, truly a special gift at Homecoming this year.  Let's hope he can again, this year, sing at a Cubbies' World Series game!

Go TITANS -- bring that 9-1 season home.

When was the last time we had CCIW Varsity Monday Night Football?

Carthage with 24 unanswered points to rout Elmhurst.   :(     Seems Elmhurst has been hanging tough, but finding ways to steal a loss, from the jaws of victory.  I am not sure if it just lack of execution, lack of (coaching) halftime adjustments, or what not.  Not sure yet.  But seems Elmhurst is close, but just not able to "make it happen".  With a tough road ahead of them to close the season,  this could be a long rest of the season.

The second game half of the season between North Central and Wheaton will commence at 6:00 tonight in Wheaton.
The Cardinals dominated the early first half action, but the momentum swung to the North DuPagers as the action was halted by the elements at 10:30 PM.
It will be interesting to see whether the two day postponement of the second half will be of more benefit to the Birds or the Wheaties.
Has the interim more allowed NCC to recover and regain the upper hand it held early, or to dissipate the power that Wheaton seemed to be building as the first game half ended??
Tune in at 6:00 for the answer.  :-X

I bet the delay favored Wheaton,  so it allowed them to see what was working/not working,  but I think North Central still wins this game late.  (My two cents)

Hypothetical question: Say Kuhl just so happened to be healthy today, would he be able to suit up even though he wasn't healthy on Saturday? (obvious hypothetical as his injury sounds not great)

I'm going to disagree.  North Central had controlled play for 25 minutes or so and held a 13-0 lead.  Wheaton, right before half, mounts a drive sticks it into the end zone and cuts the lead to 13-7 and grabs the momentum.  The Crusaders are fired up on the field and on the sideline.  Momentum (to quote Keith Jackson) "just took off a white jersey and put on a blue one".  From what I could hear on the internet, the rain soaked crowd (that remained) had been reenergized.  And, Wheaton is receiving the second half kickoff.  Not great for the Cards.

However, the skies opened up, everyone goes home and we start again on Monday.  Momentum carry over?  I don't think so.  Now we play a jamboree with NCC spotted six points.  I'll take it.  Maybe we could get a mulligan once a year that if a game starts going south  on the road, you can stop it, take two days off to regroup and start from the same spot.

I would like to hear some other takes on who it favors.
