Question from totally out in left field:  Is there an "official" pronunciation for that sea to the southeast of us:

   1.  CARE uh be un
   2,  Ca RIB ee un

I confess to using them pretty interchangeably: as a noun standing alone it is usually #1, as an adjective generally #2, but I'm not real consistent.  Just wondering if I am sometimes 'right' and sometimes 'wrong'. or is it simply arbitrary?

I'm betting this group of scholars can say (or confuse this issue even further!)

My dictionary lists your #1 (CARE uh be un) as the #1 pronunciation. It's named after the CARE ib Indians. Your #2 (ca RIB ee un) is regarded in some circles as an affectation but is listed as #2.
So, I guess, both are correct. I use #1 myself. Hope that helps.

If I run into a situation like this, I'd just say El Mar   (translates to "The Sea) and hope your audience knows which body of water you are referring to.
