NCC beats WashU fairly easily.
Wheaton shreds NCC.
WashU knocks down Wheaton.

Football life in the CCIW. 🤔

The CCIW will most likely only get one team in the post season this year.

That's undoubtedly true if IWU wins out.  But if they don't, the CCIW could well end up with two 9-1 teams.

The only way the conference gets two 9-1 teams is if Wash U and North Central both win out.  That would require, as you suggest, both teams beating the Titans, which will be a tall order for either team.

Anything other than that scenario means a second bid would have to come from an 8-2 team, which is not unheard of but also highly unlikely.

IWU-Wash U is a huge contest next week.

There are so many ways the conference race could play out at this point.  I can't really remember a season like this.

IWU (5-0) - @ Wash U, @ Millikin, vs NCC, @ North Park
Millikin (4-1) - @ Elmhurst, vs IWU, vs Wash U, @ NCC
Wash U (4-1) - vs IWU, @ Augustana, @ Millikin, vs Carroll
NCC (4-1) - @ Carthage, vs Elmhurst, @ IWU, vs Millikin
Wheaton (3-2) - @ Augustana, vs Carroll, @ Carthage, vs Elmhurst
----------------
Augustana (2-3)
Carthage (2-3)
Carroll (1-4)
Elmhurst (0-5)
North Park (0-5)

There are legitimately 5 teams in contention for the CCIW title here in mid-October.  Great stuff.

... right -- I forgot about Millikin.  (Easy to do since the internet won't reach Decatur for another ten years or so...)

That's a tough endgame on their schedule, but the Big Blue are very much in the mix as well.

I would like to congratulate Illinois Wesleyan for Wash U's win over Wheaton today.  Wash U's Defensive Coordinator, Jeff Fisher, is my IWU '93 classmate, and my fraternity brother.

Congratulations, Fish...and congrats to IWU.

Congrats to Wash U.  What a game their defense played.  All Conference tackle Andrew Jones had a difficult day due to the speed he faced.  Here's a few other things I saw that influenced the game.

1.  WashU's tempo on offense.  Wheaton seemed to sometimes be out of position and not fully set.  It didn't appear to be conditioning issue, but more of not being fully ready.  This was particularly clear on the first drive of the second half.

2.  Curtis McWilliams injury.  Furrow did a good job of coming in and maintaining, but the offense did not have that same spark.

3.  Wheaton's quarterbacks unwillingness to run.  Numerous times they had chances to run out big gains on broken plays, and they dumped it to the well covered outlet receiver instead.  That might be a talent issue or coaching preference.

These were not the deciding issues in the game. Wheaton's defense, similar to the IWU game, played well enough to win. They held an offense averaging 30 pts a game to 17 (similar to IWU). If you want to know why Wheaton lost its because they were dominated at the LOS on offense by WashU's defensive line. 11 sacks, -3 yds rushing, 3 turnovers, 1 for 14 on 3rd downs, and 10 penalties. WashU's 5-9, 195 lb DE,  Peter Pigatti, had 3.5 sacks against Wheaton's preseason AA 6-5, 320lb Andrew Jones. Pigatti was a couple holding calls on Jones away from doubling that total in the game.

The hit on McWilliams was legal and he just landed wrong. It's unfortunate because as bad as our Oline played, we probably win that game if McWilliams was able to play.

As for why our Oline can look like national champs against NCC and Millikin and play like that against IWU and WashU, I don't know the minds of 18-21 years olds.

Wheaton is ranked 12th in the country...and is in 5th place in the CCIW.

Those are from two different dates, of course.

Well, I could get into a Sageristic debate on this and build a solid case that this is a fact as of today -- that on Oct 14 Wheaton is ranked 12th in the country and in 5th place in the CCIW.

But I know what you are saying. :)

Sorry Q.  The rankings state that they are "Through games of Oct 6"  Pat has you on this one.  ::)

OK I am getting more interested in this debate now...

Wasn't Wheaton ranked #12 yesterday (when I made that post)?

When games ended yesterday, wasn't Wheaton both ranked #12 by D3football.com and in 5th place in the CCIW?

A "Sageristic debate" as you referenced above might result in an answer of "semantics."
Yes, as the game ended, Wheaton was technically still the #12 team. However, had a new poll been taken immediately instead of today or tomorrow, the #12 spot would undoubtedly be occupied by someone other than the crusading Thunder. In reality, does a team vacate a position upon the conclusion of a loss or is it theirs until a new poll is taken and results are publicized? I don't think that Wheaton is really the #12 team right now.  🤷‍♂️  ::)  ;D
