Bell Week game preview is out...

https://northcentralcardinals.com/news/2021/9/15/week-2-football-preview-wheaton.aspx

MIAC Pickems has NCC as a 3.5pt favorite
OAC Pickems has NCC as a 6.5pt favorite

NCC has won 3x @Wheaton in 20 years with the last win in 2013.

It's heating up.

I will come clean and admit that I picked Wheaton to win in the poll.
You win! You always do!

You can still have NCC to win and pick Wheaton to cover! I'd take Wheaton an 6.5pts!

I don't agree with those spreads at all.  If I were handicapping this game it would be Wheaton -3 (home field) and O/U at 55.

Here is my wish list for Saturday night:

1. No train traffic during the course of the game.
2. No rain delays (I'm busy on Monday).
3. An exciting game full of good sportsmanship that ends with no serious injuries for either team.
4. A NCC win.

Too much to ask for?

Hmmmmmm 🤔. And it's WC going in with the veteran QB plus home field advantage 👉 Interesting.
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

Don't surround yourself with yourself. 🧍🏼‍♂️(Yes)

I see the Bell Battle really coming down to the success of each offense.  Obvious right?  But...

    • Wheaton's young WR crew and graduation of stud running back means a veteran NC defense could have the advantage.  2019 Wheaton's 3 huge plays with diving catches were the difference.
    • If the NC running game can continue it should keep the dominant Wheaton D-line from straight rushing the QB and allow him to find all his options vs an inexperienced secondary.
    • Kicking game may be a hidden Wheaton advantage as NC seems to still be working out the kinks.

BIG BLUE BEN

Expect a great game up @Wheaton. I believe Wheaton's D-line to be the better of the two, however, I think NC has a slight advantage in the skill position department. Wheatons key to success will be scoring first and playing with the lead. If NC finds them selves in 3rd and 8-12 and Wheaton's pass rushers can peal their ears back and get after a freshman QB then I think its going to be a long day for NC. In the end though, I think NC wins in a close one 28-23.

As for the Millikin @ Augy Matchup.

I expect to see Millikin to be shot out of a cannon when they take the field and will play with a chip on their shoulder. Although Greenville was a much stronger team than history shows, it was a wake up call to the Big Blue that you cannnot take any team for granite. Unlucky for Augy there is no way to "fake" or manufacture desperation. With that said, I think Millikin comes out and plays like a team refusing to lose again while Augy plays like a team hoping to win. There is an old saying that goes, "always fear a man who has nothing to lose" and I think that saying holds true Saturday and Millikin plays harder for longer and wins decisively.

Not sure if I agree with you on the better D-line.  Re-watched the Cardinal opener and part of the 2019 National Championship game.  NCC's D-Line has been outstanding.  The ends get up the field and find the QB on his spot since the DT's (particularly #48-- one of the most underrated performers on this team) continually push the pocket into the QB's lap so he can't step up or step into throws for that matter.  Wheaton's O-Line is outstanding but I watch pocket being pushed regularly to disrupt the passing games.

I would push back on your take of Wheaton having a young WR crew. They don't have the experience like NCC's WR starters but there's some experience on Wheaton that came back.   One of the receivers (Adam Terrini) who made one of those three diving catches is back for his 6th year. He was a 2nd team d-3 all-north selection back in 2019.  Another of the receivers (Matthew Tucker) filled in for Phillip Nichols when he was injured last year and had 18 catches, including a 69 yarder against Central in the playoffs.  Also, the only drop-off between last year's starting stud running back and this year's starting stud running back comes in the form of experience.  Barring injury, Weeks should run for a thousand yards this year.   Wheaton also has very dangerous tight ends, including (6th year) 6-6 Spencer Peterson who's an athletic freak of nature.

The first million-dollar question for me is can NCC's inexperienced freshman offensive lineman protect their inexperienced freshman QB and open up holes for NCC's incredible RBs against Wheaton's front 7. It's one thing do it against Aurora's mediocre/average front seven, none of which would crack the 1st or 2nd string of Wheaton's or NCC's defenses, but it's an entirely different ball game against Wheaton's front 7, which is the best in the country.  The other million-dollar question for me is how will Wheaton's inexperienced secondary do against those the WR unit of NCC which I believe is the best in the country (along with Mount Union's)?

I think that this game goes down to the wire and will be won with either a TD or a Field Goal in the last 2 minutes.  It's a coin flip for me as to who comes out on top.  I truly expect this game to be an epic one for the ages.

North Park has a 6'5" 235lb DI transfer (a jr) who plays QB.  NPU starts a 6' 160 lb frosh at QB in game 1.  The bigger head scratcher is why didn't the transfer play WR?  Mr. Little could definitely help the passing game against cornerbacks who are typically at least a half foot shorter and weigh at least 50 pounds less. <110 passing yards versus Bethel.  I can only say, more NPSnafU.  SMH.

Matt Little is injured, Mark. He's been out since before the preseason scrimmage against Rockford.
