I just found out about the travesty of Mount Union hosting the Semi-Final game.  I rarely agree with the guys on D3football.com, but they got this one right!  The rules are that the defending champion when undefeated and no common opponents host all the way to the Stagg Bowl.  The rule was written ten years ago specifically for Mount Union.  If a rule change is in order, a genuine, non-corrupt leader will change it BEFORE the season, not in the middle of the play-offs!
I am an NCC Alum but coached football for a while at an NAIA school.  I have long been an advocate of schools leaving Division 3 for NAIA.  The athletes are treated better and the schools can give money for athletics.  The system was always fair which is more than I can say for the NCAA.  I as one am going to pressure the NCC administration to make a formal complaint to the NCAA about this to make it as painful as possible so the committee thinks twice about travesties like this again.
As far as the team goes, I know that coach Thorne will use this to get his team more ready than ever and all that frustration will be put into Mount Union

maybe join a NAIA football message board?

I believe that the rule you say "was specifically written for mount union" is actually referenced as the "Whitewater" rule.  You see, the NCAA just loves Mount Union so, soo much that there was never a rule needed.  Mount just always gets home playoff games.  Isn't that the narrative that we are pushing?

But beyond all that: So this process happens after every round with every team and no one outside the NCAA knew it?

This is the part that a bit mind blowing to me. NCC got the shaft here (through no fault of Mount Union). But to suddenly find out that the committee continues to meet and re-examine the criteria each round is a huge deal. And it appears no one even knew that was a thing.

It's been said before, but the bummer here is for the families of NCC players. The logistics and cost of attending the Semi-final and Stagg likely just doubled. Not every family will have the money to simply take in both games. Do you skip the Semifinal, so you can travel to the Stagg, but risk missing your family members final game?  :-\

Yup, the Whitewater rule it was. Hawks won in 2009, then ran the table in 2010 only to be forced to hit the road and play at NCC and then again at Wesley to get to the Stagg Bowl.

BS....but we overcame it ;D

Oh nice...but I wouldn't get my hopes up that anything will come from it. Maybe they will change their views in future playoff games. But that does little to NCC (and its fans) this weekend.

True ... and it's even more bizarre when you consider the inherent unhealthiness of the game of football itself.

When you consider the risk of broken bones, mangled joints, torn muscles, concussions, severe cuts, etc., that every player takes when he steps onto the field, the infinitesimal chance that he will contract a disease from close and prolonged proximity to a specific but random opponent, a disease that almost certainly wouldn't permanently harm him, seems even more absurd.

Ding, ding, ding!

I am not even sure we will be playing football 50-60 years from now for this reason even though I love the sport and feel far better about the way it is played at the Division III level.

The worst part for me is the fact the North Central players were at no greater risk of getting a disease in a game that they would be going about their everyday lives.

A disease that has a 99.999999% survival rate for otherwise healthy individuals in the 18-30 age category.

I did not realize that the game officials and other event staff are all in the 18-30 year old age range.

Oh please. The game is played outside in which Covid doesn't do Anything and the refs can mask and stay away from the kids if they'd like.

Plus, it's only close contact if you're exposed for 15min within 6ft. At least that's what we're told.

Oh please yourself.

There are a million different opinions on how to best mitigate risk in the pandemic and my intent here is not to debate which is right as the past twenty months have shown us that this is a colossal waste of time.

My point is that if this context is narrowly viewed as only involving the players, then the aperture is not broad enough.

To CMUs defense I believe they had near 100% vaccination rate, not sure there's much else they could have reasonably done to avoid Covid.

Then I feel bad for them (we can all agree that COVID can stick it where the sun doesn't shine), and still believe that however the no-contest was resolved should not have upturned the apple-cart the way it did.

I don't think CMU needs any defense. I sense they took every reasonable precaution. Even if they were 100% vaccinated someone somehow could have contracted the disease. I've not heard anyone say anything about this mess being CMU's fault.

On a personal note if I'm permitted........................

I highlighted the above sentence about a 100% vaccination rate due to a recent experience wherein I almost lost my wife who just spent 28 days in the hospital. She was admitted for a non Covid related infection which affected several bodily systems. At one point it was thought she had suffered a stroke on top of the 4-5 problems she was already fighting. As such, she was transferred from the internal medicine related unit to the neuro intensive care unit. Although after several tests she was found not to have had a stroke, she somehow got Covid despite the fact that 100% of the people who work within that area are fully vaccinated as are myself and the only other 2 visitors she had while there. I'm saying this just to illustrate the fact that even when seemingly all precautions are taken the evil Covid bug can still somehow find a way to bite you.
It's been a very hellish time recently during which it's often seemed like nothing was going right. There really hasn't been a lot of fun in life recently. Fortunately my wife is now recovering at home and is at a point where I could drive 5 minutes away and spend a couple hours without her needing me for that length of time. I'm sure I over-reacted to losing out on this possibility and thus my recent complaints. Just need to remember that everything pales in comparison to having my better half home and on the road to a full recovery. Sorry for the rant. * Everyone please take care of yourselves AND each other.

So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

Sorry that your wife and you had to endure that, but very glad to hear that she's on the mend and that no stroke occurred.

Agree that nobody is blaming CMU nor are they blaming UMU for anything that has transpired.  None of these things are anything that any team has any ability to control.  Only thing left to do is play some (elite level, entertaining) football!

A formal complaint is a call from the President of the school to the Division three council of Presidents,  They then can table the issue for correction,  won't happen by Saturday but can lead to a long term fix

Seems to me that this doesn't require a "long-term fix" at all. It simply requires that the committee abide by the criteria that are already in place, as previous committees always have, and that the committee stop monkeying with the SOS by re-calculating it after every round (which, according to Pat's and Greg's podcast, the committee has apparently never done before).

Now, if by "long-term fix" you're implying that the committee needs to be censured, disbanded, whatever, for either misfeasance or malfeasance ... well, that's another matter.

I was aware of the other people that would be needed to play the game.  I guess I assumed that with masks and an outdoor setting, that those folks would be taking on no risk whatsoever.

But, I think the games should have been played last Fall so...
