EIU's Head Coach is heading to Duke as OL Coach. Being that Jeff Thorne is an EIU grad...isn't this the perfect time for him to get a serious look at EIU? Would do a great job recruiting the state.

Would he take it?

Cushing was making north of 372k at EIU in 2019. Would assume Throne would more than dbl his salary.

IMO, no chance he takes it. Crazy if he doesn't get a call though.

EIU has been struggling financially, so I'm not sure he would increase his salary significantly. There's also the question of where he and his family want to live: Naperville or Charleston, IL? I suspect EIU would love to hire Thorne, but the job may not be appealing to him.

NCC just announced on Twitter Jeff Thorne is stepping down and Brad Spencer is taking over as head coach.

He is taking a job at Western Michigan.
Offensive coordinator? Congrats to him and congrats to Brad Spencer, who has spent the last 20 years working as closely as you possibly can with the Thornes. I'm sure he'll continue our excellent tradition!

I'm guessing to be closer to his son at Michigan State? It would make sense. Also, Tim Lester just got an extension at WMU so there's a WW South/NCC/CCIW connection there.

May have previously been mentioned, but Thorne and Lester go all the way back to Wheaton Central high school, back in the 80's/90's.   Thorne coached Lester when he played QB.  Lester was then on NCC's staff back in mid 2000's.

Happy for Coach Thorne, wonderful man and family.

True, but, CCIW-wise, Lester's always going to be thought of first in the context of Elmhurst rather than North Central. He was only the DC at North Central, but he was the head coach at Elmhurst. Yeah, his CCIW championship at the helm of the Bluejays in 2012 and his first-round playoff win that year were vacated due to NCAA sanctions, but I don't recall anybody making him give back his CCIW Coach of the Year award ... and he can still brag about recruiting and coaching a Gagliardi Trophy winner in Scottie Williams.

(I know, I know ... as if anybody in the D1 football world cares about John Gagliardi or his namesake award, or about Scottie Williams.)

Far fetched ... with Coach Thorne moving to Western Michigan University, what are the chances of son Payton entering the transfer portal and becoming a Bronco?

Not that I blame him one bit.  A great program in a power 5 conference comes calling, I'd be hard pressed to turn it down also.  And he's doing amazing there.  I'd be shocked to see him jump ship for all these reasons.

With Coach Thorne leaving, does that mean we no longer have a current head coach in D3 that has won a D3 national championship as head coach?

Almost. Jay Locey, whose Linfield team won the 2004 national title, is head coach at Lewis & Clark.

With Thorne leaving for Western Michigan to be its Offensive Coordinator, I am curious if any NCC players who have shown d-1 potential (DeAngelo Hardy comes to mind) will eventually hit the transfer portal and follow him?
