A fully enjoyable day at Tucci Stadium and Wilder Field . . .  at IWU.   Sunny and warm in the mid-70s.  A relatively quiet crowd, no pep band, as many students of "Fall break."

38-zip at the half, and then second and third groups playing most of the final Q on both sides.   IWU with two picks, very good defense, and just a dominating game . . . Hamilton with 3 TD catches.   Final as reported = 55 - 0.

Looks like the Titans might finish a respectable 7-3 this year.

Welcome back D'Angelo Hardy.  Mercy that was a good catch.

Nothing USee or Sager couldn't have handled.  8-)   :D

Final from St Louis.

NCC——-31
Wash U—-0

Lehnen 16-20, 3 TD's
Greenfield 129 yards rushing
Hardy 9 receptions, 160 yards, 3 TD's

#37 Christensen from Wash U seemed to be everywhere making tackles. Kudos to him!

Just goes to show how top-heavy the CCIW is this year. WashU's offense turned into a pumpkin after looking like world beaters in previous weeks.

That wasn't just Pretty Good. That was awesome. Thanks for that link, Lucas.

I highly recommend that everybody watch the 20-minute video that Lucas linked. You'll be amazed.

For what it is worth, Washington University had nothing to do with the administration of the 1904 Olympics.  The University bought property to move the campus and needed a way to finance the construction of additional buildings.  They leased the newly-built buildings to the World's Fair and Olympic committees.  The business of the University continued on the downtown campus until after the World's Fair had finished.

Interestingly, the marathon debacle may have been falsely blamed on one or more Chicago universities had it not been for the fact that David Francis, on of the institution's most famous alumni, successfully stole the Olympics from the Windy City.

The St. Louis Olympics did successfully sponsor every other sport currently being offered by the CCIW including both American and Association football, basketball, baseball, tennis and were highly regarded for doing so...

Definitely not blaming Wash U for the idiocy of the folks that ran the 1904 Olympics (and the marathon in particular). I just had to play off the field renaming conventions kiko was running with, especially given that the first mile of the race took place on those very grounds.

It depends on how you define top-heavy. We have the #1 ranked team in the country in our league and then at least 2 other teams in Wheaton and WashU that are top 25 teams and capable of winning playoff games. Then I think we have the next tier in Augie and IWU that are probably somewhere in the 30-75 range.

Of IWU and Augie, IWU seems a little stronger overall, but I think both are a lot closer to #75 than to #30 country wide.

HansenRatings has Augie as #39 and IWU as #93 right now. I think Augie will be favored this weekend in Rock Island.

Massey has Augie at #89, and Illinois Western as #90. He has Augie winning 35-28 next Sat at Augie.

My above statement was influenced by the fact that in the parts of AC and IWU videos I have seen I just thought IWU looked (very) slightly more impressive. However, quite conceivable the teams I've seen IWU against are inferior to those I've watched Augie play.
Should be close.

The orginal post I was responding to was the idea that the CCIW is somewhow top heavy because of the WashU v NCC result. I think losing to the #1 team in the country and keeping them at half of their usual point output is about what I expected. I didn't expect WashU's up tempo, veteran offense to get shutout, even against a top 10 national defense. But I thought the result would be a 2-3 score victory. It certainly isn't an indication of the CCIW's overall ability IMO.

In terms of predictive results, I tend to follow HansenRatings more closely than Massey as I think he takes into account recent results and becomes more accurate as the season wears on. That's largely because he uses factors that other ratings systems don't really consider. HansenRatings won't have this weeks game predictions available for a couple days.

As for Augie and IWU, I have seen both teams play multiple times. The results against common opponents are part of what I consider.  Augie had close games with Wheaton and WashU and IWU was not competitive in either of those contests. Both had close games with Carroll. I think Augie has a much, much better offensive line and skill players overall on offense than IWU and Augie's defensive backs are significantly better than IWU's. The Titans have one of the best WR's in the conference and they seem more settled on offense but their OLine is still very suspect (2.7 yds per rush vs Augie 4.9 yds per rush).

This game will decide if Augie finishes 6-4 (per my prediction) or 5-5 as they play Carthage at home and @NCC to finish. IWU has a chance to go 7-3 if they can win this weekend, despite what will end up as 3 blowout losses (They play v NCC and @Elmhurst to finish).

Yeah, the most impressive part of Saturday's game in St. Louis was the 0 in 31-0.  Didn't expect the Bears to get completely short circuited the way they did.

Wash U had opportunities.  They were in the red zone a couple of times and turned the ball over on a forced fumble that was mentioned on the Podcast and an interception on an overthrow.  I thought they had some success early on running the football and got away from that.  The penalty on the fake punt they successfully ran was huge.  I can see why they have put up a bunch of points.  They have some very good WR's and the RB is good. QB did a good job of getting the ball to the open receiver.
