I haven't seen Carroll but I wouldn't be surprised if Augie rolls this weekend.

Augustana had to come back from a nine-point deficit in the game's final dozen minutes to nip Carroll, 23-19, in Rock Island. I kept it to myself, but, having previously seen both teams, I strongly suspected that this was going to be a very competitive game.

It was highly competitive last year, as well.

The last two years.  Augie lost in OT in the 21 season and in double OT last year.  Glad they were finally able to pull out at win against a Carroll program that has been steadily improving over the past few seasons.

Am I reading this right? Carthage scores TDs 12 seconds apart to win on Saturday?

79jaybird

yes.  Like the Bears Elmhurst found a way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.  Which is a shame for Elmhurst fans, because the Jays really came out in the first half inspired poised for a HC upset.
Credit to Carthage coaching staff though for making some adjustments in the 2nd half.

Reality unfortunately, is these are (2) really weak teams right now.   :(

In all seriousness (yes, this is my once a year post) being both a Wheaton and Bears fan made for a painful weekend...

Carthage dominated the game statistically, but NPU played a better football game. The Vikings came up with a pair of pick-sixes and stopped the Firebirds three times in the red zone (twice on fourth-down stops -- Carthage has not attempted a field goal all season, and there must be a reason for that -- and once on a fumble recovery at the NPU 5 that thwarted a 75-yard Carthage drive). Carthage also cut its own throat with 12 penalties for 115 yards, several of them coming in key situations, and lost the turnover battle to NPU, 4-0.

Jaydin Miller continues to have an All-American-caliber season for North Park. The junior LB from South Bend had 13 tackles today (12 solo), two TFLs, a sack (he leads the CCIW in that category), a forced fumble and fumble recovery, a pass breakup, and his second interception of the season. He did everything but drive the bus back from Kenosha.

North Park is pretty good.

Just glancing at the live stats.  Carroll has scored two touchdowns against North Central in the first half.  Wheaton was the only team to score more than one touchdown against the Cardinals in the regular season last year.  Might have to turn that game on as I am curious.

A week after NCC went quick strike mode on Wheaton, they did it again to Carroll yesterday. The Cardinals averaged 14 yards per play and posted three separate one play touchdown drives of 69, 76, and 93 yards. And that doesn't count a 98 yard Joey Lombardi kickoff return touchdown off Carroll's first score, plus a 76 yard Angelo Cusumano pick-6 in the second half.

The one possible cause for concern I have (as noted by Frank Rossi) is that the Cardinals have lost the time of possession battle in all four CCIW games this season, but they have won those games by a combined score of 252-65.

The only thing NCC needs to increase its TOP is a defense facing them that can limit their avg yds per play to single digits.

Losing the TOP battle is a direct result of all of the things you described in the first paragraph.  I actually think if/when they win TOP it will be a sign that the offense has been slowed.

Congrats to NPU junior linebacker Jaydin Miller, who has won the CCIW Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. He is the first player in Vikings history to win two DPOW awards in one season, and he's the first Viking to win multiple POW awards in a season since RB Darnell Rios won four during the 2000 season.

Re: NCC concerns

I'm more concerned that they gave up 14 in 1Q.
