Quote from: USee on October 21, 2024, 12:08:45 PMSomething happened in the Wheaton/Carthage game that hasn't happened for Wheaton since 1918, which is longer than either Sager or I have been around!

Wheaton played an entire game with zero penalties called. Zero. I have never seen that in any football game (saw it once in basketball). Crazy.

I think Wheaton will be a slight dog to WashU in St Louis this weekend.

They made it to the promised land! Just a few weeks ago a clip went viral of a pbp man alluding to the fact the game had no penalties to that point (it was in the 3rd quarter of some random D1 game, I believe), and the color man basically said "don't you dare say it"....and on the ensuing play there was a penalty. Good stuff.

Perhaps we've discovered the football equivalent to the no-hitter-in-progress rule. I should add, though, that some broadcasters have disclosed that a pitcher has a no-hitter in progress, while others follow the traditional baseball superstition and treat an in-game mention of it as though it was violating a taboo.

Never called a football game in which a team had no penalties -- it's rare to see a team get through just one half without a penalty, let alone an entire game -- but I've come close to calling one or two baseball no-hitters. My baseball colorman and I definitely tiptoe around the topic if it looks like there's a no-no brewing.

"Developing situation" does a lot of heavy lifting in these scenarios.   :)

Several years ago I was keeping the scorebook in the dugout for a home game.  I forget who we were playing, but after finishing up an inning, our defense came into the dugout and a first-year player said out loud, "Does the other team even have a hit yet?"  You should have seen the laser beams coming from the eyes of all the other players.

Does WashU lock up a playoff spot?

It would be the biggest win for the program since the 2018 win over Wheaton.  Or maybe the biggest win since joining the NCAC which was the biggest win since the 2018 Wheaton game which was the biggest win since joining the CCIW.

Does IWU spoil the party in Chicago?

Yes

Does Millikin break a 16 game losing streak?

No

Interesting.

The Bears did return their starting RB at Elmhurst, but did not playing their starting QB.  Instead, they played the back-up who had not been on the field since the North Central.

I assume that if both area healthy enough, both will play significant minutes against Wheaton.

NCC2019

As a big NCC fan, I absolutely hate our "fans" on Twitter. There are a few who ruin the reputation of the whole fanbase. They spend more time attacking rankings, projections, and any other viewpoint other than "NCC is the best team in the history of football." It comes with the territory of being ranked No. 1. Be grateful that we have an amazing team to watch and support; don't go after other fans or people who work incredibly hard to support DIII football. There are over 300 more teams than NCC in DIII football, if you want NCC news, follow NCC Athletics.

D3football.com did a great piece on North Park because they are having a very good season. All I saw from it was NCC fans attacking North Park/D3football.com because of the timing of the article. Not cool! There were many times 5+ years ago that NCC was hoping to get covered by national news outlets.

I get that it's political season where everyone seems to attack others rather than promote what they actually stand for, but just be supportive. NCC is phenomenal right now, but like all things, it will come to an end. Just enjoy it.

Just a rant I have wanted to post for awhile. Long time viewer, first time poster.

HansenRatings has Wheaton as a slight favorite. I have them as a 3 pt dog. HansenRatings lists this game as the biggest in terms of playoff implications this weekend:

https://x.com/LogHanRatings/status/1848724354344882490/photo/1

With a win, WashU is a 90% lock for the NCAA tourney and Wheaton is 0%. HansenRatings says Wheaton is 78% for the NCAA tournament with a win, although I am very dubious of that projection given the NPI system.

Pat Coleman

That projection uses the NPI system. But it also relies on projecting every other game that is yet to be played as well -- Wheaton only controls its remaining games.

I appreciate this. It seemed particularly silly to me and probably I should not have even responded, but there are indeed a few North Central fans who do so, much like there have been Mount Union fans who have felt the same way.

Turns out that every sports team has ridiculous fans. Not justifying it, just a fact. Fanatics.

Doesn't help that Twitter has gone to the dump over the last 2 yrs for some reason.

Good post, and welcome to the ranks of the ex-lurkers!

I'm glad that I completely missed that Twitter discussion. RG is right that every fan base has an obnoxious element, but success brings both greater involvement and greater visibility to the successful team's fan base, so the obnoxious element therefore draws more public attention. As you said, it comes with the territory.
