I echo the thoughts, prayers and comments of those who have posted before me.  It is a sad day for IWU, CCIW and all of Division III.  I wish the family and friends the best as they mourn this loss.  I also hope that the IWU team can overcome this tragedy and play well in Schmied's memory this season.  A terrible loss indeed...

I am deeply saddened by the death of a young man that I have never had the privilege of meeting or watching play on the footbal field.

This is such a terrible tragedy.

My heartfelt sympathy to Doug's parents, family, friends and teammates.

My condolences to all in Doug's life. I can't even imagine what his family, teammates, coaches and friends are feeling. I think back to how close we became in camp this time of year and most people who have never been a part of a football team will never realize just how big this game makes your family, and just how many this will affect for the rest of their lives. A very sad day.

As all before have said I would also like to send my condolences out to Doug Schmied's family, the IWU team and student body and community in this very hard time. I am 21 myself and a senoir in college and when I read the news in the paper today it made me stop and think for moment about how 21 is just too young. Even though the CCIW schools are opponents on Saturday afternoons they are also a conference that is bonded by sportsmanship and respect for each other, and I hope that during each CCIW game fans and players both will remember Schmeid and his commitment to make our conference as well as his team better. Once again to both his family and to IWU my thoughs are with you.

Vikes,

If the CCIW 'powers-that-be' have not already thought of it, I'm with you.  I hope EVERY game in the conference this year will begin with a 'moment of silence'.

I understand that IWU players will all wear his number this year - it would be a wonderful gesture if other teams would also join in.

Not much else to say but terribly sorry to the young man's family both off and on the field.   Sad Sad day.

What a terrible tragedy and loss for the Schmied and IWU families.  My heartfelt condolences to all.  I agree with Vikes 35 and Mr. Ypsi that it would be a fitting tribute if the other CCIW teams are able to make some small gesture on game days in memory of Doug Schmied.  Hopefully, this will happen.  My prayers and thoughts are with all of Doug's family and friends.

Very sorry to learn of this tragedy.  May he rest in peace and his family and friends, both on and off the field, find comfort in their faith and in one another.  Such a sad, sad thing.

a huge tragedy for the schmied's. IWU and the CCIW have suffered an enormous setback. My condolences to the family, his teammates and all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Hard to imagine getting back to normal after something like this.

My deepest sympathy to the entire IWU family on your loss. We at Fontbonne Univ. had our starting pt. guard die on the floor in practice seven years ago. We know the pain you are suffering. Our prayers are with you all.

As an Illinois Wesleyan alum, I'd like to sincerely thank everyone here for the heartfelt posts directed towards Doug Schmied's family and the IWU community.  I live in Bloomington, Ill. and I am pretty close to Titan athletics, and I can tell you that it has been an extremely difficult week for everyone on that campus.  Your support is just another reminder of why Division III is so special.

My gut feeling is that it would be a very good thing to get some CCIW football conversation started again.  Please continue to keep the Schmied's and the IWU community in your thoughts, but I think it might go a long way to starting the healing process if everyone now starts to look forward to the season, which is almost upon us.  Maybe what has happened at Illinois Wesleyan this week will help us all keep athletics in a little better perspective.

Good luck to all CCIW and Division III football teams in 2005, and go Titans.
