oap5387,
Probably because it was a long, uneventful offseason and there is finally a few things to talk about.  It's pretty typical to get cantankerous every now an then on a few topics.  You think things "are all funny" now, just wait a few weeks when conference play begins. ;D

I found the article regarding the intersection of athletes, academics and admissions.  In Reclaiming the Game, former Princeton President, William Bowen, and Sarah Levin, found that their analysis of the Ivies and other "private research universities"*, give athletes from coaches' lists a substantial advantage in admissions.  for example, male athletes who applied to the Ivies with SAT scores between 1100-1199 had 50-50 odds of being admitted whereas a male non-student athlete had virtually no chance of admission.  Also, athletes tend to cluster in certain academic disciplines, mostly in the social sciences and in business.

*The study focused on the Ivy and NESCAC conferences and 10 other elite D3 schools, ie, Bryn Mawr; Carleton; Denison; Kenyon; Macalester; Oberlin; Pomona; Smith; Swarthmore; and Wellesley.  The authors also researched four UAA schools, but they did not yield the same results.

Actually knowing someone who goes to North Park, They have decreased there tuition this year by a large percentage.  This was due to an excess of cash.  Interesting, only school I have ever heard who has decreased tuition.

markerickson, as i've granted you before, in general, athletes get preferential treatment during the admissions process.  in fact 10 years ago, even at iwu, augie, and wheaton that was true.  what i'm saying is TODAY that is no longer the case.  being a graduate of the fine academic institution in bloomington, i will gladly go into specifics of sampling error, bell curves, standard deviation, etc.  i'm not sure why it is so hard to understand that while this is the case most everywhere, and it certainly was the case in the cciw even a few years ago, this practice is by and large no longer seen in member cciw schools.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

The Redmen are not going to surprise anyone this year like they did last year. Teams will be ready for them. The reason the offense worked so well last year was due to the fact that Garza had played for Coach Campbell at Menlo and was very familiar with the offense so there wasn't a big learning curve. Sharp got some playing time in it last year when Garza was hurt but it takes time to get comfortable with it. Having Dante took some of the pressure off and a back of his caliber is not easy to replace. I've heard from a couple of coaches that O'Boyle is the real deal and will be an outstanding qb for Carthage.

As long as the defense can keep the Redmen in the games, the offense has a chance to get more comfortable as the weeks go by. The CCIW will be waiting for the Redmen this year so the element of surprise won't be there. They've picked up two wins while not looking pretty in the process. But coming back from a 13-0 deficit shows that they are well coached and believe that they can win no matter the situation - an attitude that was missing on teams in the past few years as evidenced in the Augie game in 2002. I believe we had a 21-0 or 28-0 lead and then played not to lose. You may have had a couple of players believing they could win but not the entire team.

The new attitude around the team is very evident. There was always solid leadership at the top from Coach Rucks and now he has a pair of outstanding coordinators to compliment that leadership. In my opinion this is the major difference in the Carthage program.

If the choice was yours then it would be easy, but as a fellow sucker (Married guy) I understand.

Reidy--What kind of BS reason could you have?  And I don't wanna hear about that 25 hour drive either!  Suck it up!

Let me know. I will be there for sure.  Maybe we'll meet at a local tavern or something.

GO REDMEN!

Mugsy-- interesting stats up to this point.  Elm #1 scoring offense and NP #1 scoring defense.
To put in my two cents about tuition.  It would have been cheaper for me to go to Winona St., Iowa St. and Purdue than for me to go to Elmhurst.  I chose Elmhurst for the beauty of the school and student/faculty relationships.
No matter where you go, college is a BIG investment and is going to take a big chunk out of your financial $$$$ supply.  Looking back, would I trade all the $$ for the excitement of playing in the CCIW, dressing up as the mascot seeing Knuppel beat Wash U. to send us to the Sweet 16, and graduating in 4 years?  No way.  Most of my memories of Elmhurst stem from sports and the CCIW.
Hey North Parkers, what's the word on Chicago?  Either NPU is much improved or Chicago is down this year. In the 3 games thus far, Chicago has always played us tough.

Pat,

Is the kid from Augie going to be writting for you again this year?
HEY NORM, I LOST YOUR HAT! GO REDMEN!!!

Pat Coleman

I hope he will join our Insider feature again this year, yes. Talked to him very briefly at the game at Catholic and sent him some info via e-mail, so we'll se.

It's my fault -- I didn't realize he wasn't a senior last year, so I didn't puruse his return.

I know NCC won big, but with a team full of all americans why was it close with benedictine for the first half.    Or am I making something out of nothing.  Did they just come out flat..... I didn't see the game

Plus they should blow everyone out with their offensive weapons and tough d

Pat Coleman

FYI, I moved the pick-ems into a separate board under the General Football topic, just to keep them all in one place.

There's a second reason, but I can't go into it here. Just know that it was considered necessary.

If Carthage wins aganist Benedictine, they should move up in the polls no matter what. They beat a much improved Carroll team and they beat a Lakeland team that is favored to win their conference. Benedictine is also a much improved team as they showed against the so called powerhouse North Central. We all know Carthage isn't going to put up huge offensive numbers but as long as they keep winning, what is the problem?

Tailgater-
Thanks for your nice post. I agree that Sharp should be the starter but he needs to really step up and prove to his teammates that he should be the starter. He will get his chance again this weekend because Sharp will start and he is healthy. It is better that Sharp is starting this week because the Benedictine defense blitz's almost every down. They just dont do it nearly as well as the Redmen defense does. Sharp has had more time reading blitz's so he will be much more prepared. I really hope the Carthage offense gets going this weekend. Defense... well we all know how their gonna do.

GO REDMEN!!!
