Where did the Pick Em's go?
Elmhurst over North Park 28-14
Wheaton over Millikin 35-7
North Central over IWU 41-3
Augie over Carthage  17-7

It's there.  I just went over there - under Post Patterns, General Football.  Remember to include your confidence points, please. Otherwise I won't know how to tally your score other than assumptions based on score differentials (which would work I suppose).

Last year Carthage lost to Augie huge and ran the table.  What does it prove to beat Augie?  Augie DOES NOT PASS.  They grind it out straight ahead.  Carthage has amazing speed, but how much does that matter when you are getting hit straight in the mouth for 3 hours of football.  the only defensive speed that matters in a game like this is speed off the line and reaction to misdirection.  This is why I always liked the Crusader O- a far better overall test and a balance between the two.  Carthage will meet its test in the two other big conference opponents- Ncc and Wheaton.

Carthage will score on Augie's D, but will not stop the Augie run game.  This will be a higher scoring matter.

Should be a great game tomorrow night in Kenosha.  Wish I could be there.  Although Carthage has been playing some good football this year (great on the defensive side of the ball), the main reason I like Augie's chances is the play of their defense the past couple of weeks.  I was at the Platteville game a couple of weeks ago and the defense played as well as I've seen in the past several seasons.  Although UWP's record isn't great, their offense has been strong with an impressive  yards per game average.  Augie's D completely shut them down.  Although the book is still out on how improved North Park really is, it sounds like the defense continued to play well last week.  Like a lot of other posters, I believe Augie will be able to move the football and score some points against a very good Carthage D.  Over the past many years, our offense seems to thrive when going up against teams with highly rated defenses.   That happened last year against Carthage.  If O responds and the D continues to play at the level of the past couple of weeks, Augie should win in a much closer game than last year's.

Redman96,

Have to agree with Ypsi and Zorba that, should Carthage beat Augie, I don't believe they will run the table in the CCIW.  As many have said over the past several weeks, the conference is so strong that I don't believe anyone will run the table.  NCC has the best chance based on last week's results, but they still have you guys, Millikin and Augie (at Augie) and improved teams in North Park and Elmhurst.  If a team is able to run through the CCIW undefeated, I believe that team will be primed to make a run deep into the playoffs.

This is going to be a homer comment but it is very surprising to me that Tom Anthony did not make the defensive team of the week. I mean he had 3 interceptions and was a major factor in slowing down the NPU passing attack. Don't get me wrong the other are definitely deserving with the numbers they put up but come on 3 ints is a pretty good, no make that a great game.

not only that, but I would imagine that he leads D3 in ints for the season too.  He now has 6!

Man are you quick with the answers, Pat!

Now to talk about the game up in Kenosha.  Yes, Augie beat Carthage 35-0 last year, but it was a very close 35-0.  I believe I even said that in this posting room.  Carthage was able to move the ball, but fell victem to turnovers.  I think that TOs will be what determines this game.  Certainly Anthony and the rest have been up to the task against all the passing games, but Augie's opponents really haven't had any fumble problems yet.  Now, certainly being up on the competition and forcing the pass has some effect on this, but they do need to start stripping the ball.  The only "fumble" last week happened to be a bad snap in the shotgun (one of many ankle killers) that the QB wasn't able to handle.  He had to fall on it deep in his backfield.  Now the Augie O needs to protect the ball this weekend too.  They have done a decent job of itmost of the year.  As far as stopping the Augie running attact.  There really hasn't been a stopper.  There have been limiters and those were usually assisted by fumbles and penalties (Illegal shift and holding).  Now I call out to all the Carthage followers.  I need some info on a Carthage Freshman from Florida.  I think his name is spelled Falla.  His grandparents live next to my folks in FL.  Is he playing on varsity?  Let me know what you can.

Go Vikes!!!

in the "other" battle in wheaton this weekend the big blue come to town w wallick and co. the winner keeps its chances alive and the loser becomes spoiler for the balance of the race. the keys are pretty simple:

tackle wallick
eliminate the big play
don't turn it over

If the thunder can do this they win easily in my opinion. last week in naperville they gift wrapped a win for the cardiinal w second half turnovers. chupp will need to play much better this week to keep the millikin offense off the field and limit wallicks opportunities. this will be a different challenge for the young wheaton dline and lbs. they haven't really gone against a physical oline and rb like millikin. if they are equal to the task the thunder will win. last year the wheaton offense bailed them out by outscoring millikin. this year they can't count on that good fortune.

this game will be won in the trenches, specifically between millikin oline and wheaton dline.

Where did the Pick Em's go?  ;D

Jaybird:
FYI: I have found when I enter Post Patterns and for some reason don't show that I am logged in at the top, the "pickems" board does not appear under General Football heading. As soon as I log in the "pickems" board is visable and accessable.

it is not reasonable to think carthage will run the table IF they beat augie. augie is not the best team in the conference and carthage has yet to play those teams. too many good teams stand between carthage and a repeat. not to mention they play the 2 best teams on the road and have augie at home. remember only one team had a win vs a top 4 cciw team on the road last year.

when you see augie, ncc, wheaton, carthage, millikin beat a top team on the road, then you can begin to take notice. for that reason carthage is in a good spot w a big win at millikin. we will know more after they play AT ncc and AT wheaton.
