The Augie announcers said it was a final

games over....great year cards.  You made us all proud to be fans/alumni.  Those guys played with all their hearts and have made their college proud.  Lets go augie, keep the cciw alive!

cardinals

North Central finishes the year 9-2 with both losses accumulating 5 points.  What a year.  Great job coach thorne in turning this program around!!!!!

ejw

Vikings gain over 400 yards, but also give up over 400 yards offense.

TOP:  33 minutes for Lakeland, 27 for Augie - (seemed like Lakeland held the ball the entire 2nd half)

only 4 punts total (2 by each team)

If Vikes can put together two halves like the first at Mt. Union it will be a street fight next week.

Can't wait.

If there is a street fight next week and they have the same crew as we had in Alliance today, there will be a flag on every play.

Hopefully the crew from Augie's game is there.  There was alot of adrenaline, pushing, shoving, but the refs called what seemed like a pretty fair game and let the players play football.

Nobody wants to see the refs take a game over - especially in the post season.

Agreed. We had a crew from the NCAC and there was alot of booing. Last year we had a crew from the NJ league and they were worse so I guess its potluck.

The Cap-NCC game may have shown how close the CCIW and OAC really are. :)

The cards just weren't there for North Central to win. You lose your best offensive player to an injury in the first half. You have too many penalties (two personal foul facemasks, illegal forward pass). You have two catches that would have been TDs - just out of bounds. Championship teams overcome these. Better luck next time, North Central. Good luck in Crawfordsville, Capital.

Great game Augies my hat goes off to you I could not make the game to see my son play the QB for lakeland #8. You are probably wondering why he didn' start well it is because he has a broken fibula, suffered in his last game. Coach did not want to play him unless they were desperate, I guess that happen because according to the commentators on the web site said he did a good job. I wish I could have seen it. Again good luck Augies and BEAT Mt. Union.

maddog8

Congrats to the Augies, Wish I could have been there to see my son #8 for Lakeland play, but I had to work, He didn't start because he has a broken fibula in his left leg and the coach didn't want to play him unless need, I guess he was needed according to the web site radio. Seems like he played ok against a stingy D. Great Offense you guys have good luck against Mt Union, GOOOOO Vikies

I'm not sure what to make of today's game. I guess I'm just happy to come away with a win, with no apparent Augie injuries. Obviously they had a great start, but they seemed to lose intensity after that. I have to say this is the first time this year (and quite likely the last) that the bright spot for Augie was the passing game. EJW, as an ex-receiver that's gotta make you feel pretty good. I gotta give Lakeland credit. It would have been very easy to pack it in down 21-0 less than 13 minutes into the game, but they didn't. I'll also give their coach credit for pulling out all the stops with nothing to lose. Going for it on virtually every fourth down (and having a lot of success doing so), onside kicks, fake punts--it was good to see. A lot of coaches wouldn't do that just in an effort to avoid a bigger blowout. I thought one of the biggest plays of the game was Josh Patterson's save on a bad punt snap with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half. Augie was leading 21-7 at the time and if Patterson doesn't come up with that they give the Muskies the ball inside the 20 yard line with a great chance to cut it to 21-14 going into the half. Instead, he gets off a terrific 35 yard punt with no return, then a couple of plays later Anthony gets a pick to set up a Viking TD and after another defensive stop "Air Roe" puts up the final first half score with 1 second left. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but I think that was a huge play by Patterson. All that being said, they'll have to play better in all phases to have a chance next week, but I think they will. Also, congrats to North Central on a great season and their first ever playoff appearance. Tough loss today, but I'm sure they'll use that playoff experience to build on next year.

Maddog,
I'm not sure how much that fibula affected his game, but he seemed to come out firing.  I would hate to see what  your son was like at full strength.  I think he ended up with 176 yards passing in just a little over a half of playing.  I was really impressed with Lakeland not packing it up early and pulling out all the stops.  Congrats on a great effort.

My game comments:
Anthony sure came ready to play today getting his 2 ints (should have gotten 2 more) and a TD with his contribution to Air Augie.  Roe's 6/7 effort for 118 yards was um how shall I say, shocking.  His passes were even tight spirals!  Who'd of thunk it?!  The second half got a little sloppy, but we were dealing with second string on both sides of the ball.  Regardless, if White would have caught that long pass against the starters, I don't think that could have caught him.  He really threw on the afterburners.  One thing that won't show up in the stats is that there were about a dozen plays or so that show up in the stats as runs, but appeared to be passes -- quick throw to the wide out, but after they had stepped back 3 yards or so.  I was waiting (read: hoping) for the receiver to drop the "pitch" and see the Augie D run that back.

Net result, I am happy to see Augie get the win.  It can always be iffy going into the playoffs the week of finals.  Also playing against a team that hasn't come from the strongest of conferences and therefore has nothing to lose.  The Vikes will have to buckle down against the Purple Raiders.  I remember going to see them play each other at Rock Island HS Stadium with lots of snow on the ground.  It sure was a cold day, but it warmed my heart to see more lights lit up on the Augie side of the scoreboard than Mount Union that year.  Let's see if we can bring that experience back from Ohio next week.  Congrats to Coach Barnes on his first playoff win as an Augie Coach.

EJW,
It was good to see you posting today.  Hadn't heard your name in a while.

back from naperville and one of the better playoff games i have seen in a while. this was a great game between two very evenly matched teams. a few observations:

capital's defense is the real deal. best defense i have seen since probably 2003 in alliance. their secondary is extremely fast and made a huge difference in the game. their dline is athletic and can run. they are very tough.

ncc started the game getting sacked, run out of bounds for a 1 yd loss and an incomplete pass. i thought to myself, "you can't start a game much worse on offense". then cap started by getting sacked and fumbling. ncc 3-0. cap's next play off the kickoff was another fumble. 10-0 ncc. 3 plays later an int. 4 turnovers by cap in the first half.

that said i knew ncc was in trouble when they took 4 turnovers into only 10 pts. cap then got a turnover and scored and then pantello threw an impressive 46 yd td pass into the wind over two ncc defenders. 21-10 at half and it felt like cap was in control after a horrendous start.

ncc, however, lost spencer when it looked like he separated a shoulder diving for a ball that was a cap int. the second half the ncc d stepped up and radtke was particularly impressive. ncc got the momentum back in the fourth when they came out w no backs, no huddle and kniss came alive. he had been slightly off in the first half. he was throwing the ball a little late or a little off target. this allowed the cap dbacks to break on the ball and they were great at it. they broke up many would be 1st downs. once he found his rythm ncc scored and missed the 2pt.

this game came down to a few plays here or there for either team. if kniss had 10 more seconds on the clock, i believe he would have pulled ncc through. cap made a couple big plays on offense and defense down the stretch. they completed a slant on 3rd and 4 w 3 minutes to go that was huge. still, kniss got the ball back w 59 seconds and no timeouts, got to the cap 35 and ran out of time.

a great game by two very good teams. bash better be clicking next week because this cap d was the difference in this game.
