If Spencer played 2 years at IU and 2 years at NCC he is indeed done.  Im not sure what the appeal was about.  As far as NPU goes the player they had transfer in from Western Ill. last year has the ability to have the same type of impact that Spencer did.  Brandon Watts is as explosive as they come and should be a 1st team All-league performer for the Vikes wherever they decide to use him.  There is a significant positive buzz around campus with the addition of the new head coach Scott Pethtel.  He has brought a division I mentality and a real sense of accountability to a program that has severely lacked it for decades.  We here in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago are expecting a resurgence of sorts for Viking football sooner than later.  The Vikes do need a QB however!

lakeshore,

I don't think the skill positions have ever been the problem at NP.  They get beat more often than not up front.  They haven't been able to recruit the big kids up front to compete with the big boys.   IWU did a great job for a while of recruiting quality linemen.  I think their lack of those same kids is showing up in their record right now, because they have had some quality skill kids as well.

NP has always had a problem getting stud linemen (at least as far as I can recall). I believe that they started turning the corner last year by starting off w/ 3 wins. Hopefully the new coach can win some conference games. It might take a while though. Does anyone know who he kept as far as full and part time guys?? Who did he bring in thats new?? Lets not forget how long it took North Central, Elmhurst and Carthage to turn it around. It might take NP a few more years and some better recruiting!! Just MOP ::)

Lakeshore you bring up a good point about NPU and both Zorba/Card Alum also point out that nothing happens without a line.
The interior linemen are the most important component of the offense.
If you look at all the high octane offenses and stingy defenses  ( whether rushing or passing), they all have a great  line.
I think North Park is still going to struggle this year, however give Pethel a few years and he will get NPU some wins.  Same thing with Journell, Thorne, and any new coach. They have to introduce the system, the players have to put faith into the system, and recruiting will follow function.  I do like the new Stadium at Holmgren Center.

I agree about the offensive lineman issue with North Park.  You have to go back to 2000 to see an all-conference lineman (Jim Triantafillo, second team) and 1993 to see a a lineman who was first team all conference (Clint Peterson).  Every other CCIW team except North Central has had a 1st team lineman since 2002 (North Central most recently had second team member Don Kasper in 2005 and first teamer Jim White in 1997)

the year before kasper, NCC had a 3 year all conf. tackle Shultz (not sure if 2nd or 1st team)

David Schulz was 2nd team all conference each year from 2002-2004.  Don't know anything about him, but sounds like a consistent player on a steadily improving squad.

Here is the Elmhurst Football Schedule.  The only question mark is the EC/Car game.  The EC website says 1pm while the Carthage website says 6pm start.

9/2 home  Benedictine  1pm
9/16home  Chicago  1pm
9/23@Olivet (MI)  1pm (EST)
9/30@Carthage * see message above
10/7 home Augustana 1pm
10/14 @ North Central 1pm
10/21 home IWU 1 pm  ( Homecoming)
10/28 @ Wheaton  1pm
11/4 home Millikin   1pm

No long journeys this year, however next year yikes!  Trips to Augie, Millikin, and IWU.

Here is the Wheaton schedule per the Wheaton website. Looks to be a good schedule this year.  I am particularly looking forward to the Homecoming Game and the show down for the Little Brass Bell.  I also like the 2 MIAA match-ups.  3 mind-numbing trips (Millikin, Augie, and Hope) and a potential 4th going to Carthage (the ride from 94 to Kenosha feels like 20 years despite not being far distance wise).
