Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Syracuse, Michigan & Florida for National Championships in football and basketball. Add the Sooners, Buckeyes and Wolverines for a National Championship in baseball as well!!!

The Wolverines also won the softball title last year - does that put them all alone in those categories?

Mr. Ypsi

Which raises a trivia question (to which I do not know the answer!) - what school (at any level) has won national titles in the most different sports?

I'm going to take a well-hedged guess at UCLA, Michigan, Syracuse, or Williams (I know VERY little about d2 diversified sports schools - OK, I know NOTHING).  This will be a toughie, since I can't even figure out how many sports there are that have official champions!

D3db-

Media guide to the rescue!  1977 was before my time, but the statistical leaders for the '77 Stagg Bowl team were QB Dave Harvey and RB Randy Mellinger.

Ypsi, you were right about UCLA.  They are the leading school with 97 in large part due to their women's programs.  They lag behind USC in men's only sports.  I was really surprised by Stanford, which I guess shows how much credence I put toward the media giant of football instead of taking all sports into consideration.  Here are the different pages for DI through DIII championships:

D1: http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing1.html
D2: http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing2.html
D3: http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing3.html

I didn't know the NCAA had championships in rifle, skiing, and fencing.

Good job Zorba - I'll admit they were toughies - #3 is Don Shula which someone correctly guessed while the other is former Colt DB & Shula teammate Carl Taseff.  The answer to #7 is George Musso of the 1930s & 40s Chicago Bears and Jeff Query WR of the Packers (Millikin class of 1986 or 85 not sure which).  And yes indeed, the QB/RB from Wabash's '77 team were Dave Harvey & Randy Meillinger (spelling ?).  Thanks to all - thanks D3.  Trivia is fun at any level!

Irish MAY have already nailed it, but since UM has those ads about the all-UM flight, I'll guess Michigan.

If the question had been how many titles, I would have definitely guessed UCLA (and with their swimming programs, would have included Kenyon, figuring they must have been great sometime in something).  But the question was how many different sports have they won a title in?

Regardless of if it is football or fencing, if the NCAA has an official title (men and/or women), what school has the greatest diversity in titles?  Doesn't matter if you have 15 titles or 1, you have a title in that sport.  Now, how many different sports (male and female) do you have titles in?

UCLA and Stanford are tied with 16 different championships.  USC finishes 2nd with 15.  In D3, Williams is the victor with 8 different titles with TCNJ, Ithaca, and Middlebury all notching 7.  I used the sites in 3618 to check all the teams that had won championships through the fall of 2005 and then went to www.ncaasports.com to verify that none of the above won a winter sports championship.

Well, actually I don't have titles in any sports.   ;)

illinihscoach05

Great info fellas- I coached at Middlebury as well and knew they had won several (Hockey, Womens & Mens Lax maybe).  Didn't realize it was 7.  By the way, didn't Mount Union win 7 or 8 D3 football titles?

79jaybird

Most Astronauts--- Purdue
Most Band Directors, Music Teachers--- Michigan
Most football titles--- I believe it is Michigan also
Only Big 10 School to have a winning record against Michigan (I believe) is U. of Chicago.

There's a story on the front page of D3football.com that answers that question.
