IMO, key to Wheaton is not the QB's... it's the "D":

That all said... Wheaton's defense needs to be much more stout if Wheaton has any hope of winning the conference.
Spoken like someone who played defense... even if you are right. :)

Sterny, I had that same warm, fuzzy in 1987!!  Who missed the tackle close to the endzone by the way?? (Sorry Mugsy, I couldn't resist)  ;D

Add the fact that this year it is the Homecoming game.  Should be a good one, not to mention that this will be my 10 year reunion.
Nice, I may actually be there for that... depending on the disposable funds and work situation as the date gets closer.

Incidentally, since I've never heard the guy's name pronounced, does anybody know if it phonetically "Ull-Rick"  or "Ull-Rich" or maybe even "Oool-Rick" or "Oool-Rich"?

It's "Ull-Rick", I believe.

Diehard... while I wasn't the one to miss the tackle close to the endzone, it was my breakdown on the play that led to the "losing" TD - we lost to NCC 10-6.  :-[

Other than this past year, 1987 was the last time the Little Brass Bell has not been displayed in the Wheaton football offices.  I totally blew my responsibility and instead of a 2 yard loss (which is what it would have been if I did my job because Thane Ritchie, Chad Thorson and Paul Thomas were all waiting if I had turned the play in), a NCC RB almost walk in to the endzone from 10 yards out.  That play still haunts me to this day and brings a smile to CardinalAlum.

Hello All!  Been a while...

As far as non-conference goes...I think MU has the hardest of the CCIW, the rest in CCIW play a fair schedule,  I think each team is scheduling a good group for what level they are at.  MU may be playing a bit tougher than they should but I've always had respect for MU, I've only been on one NCC team thats beaten them and they play tough physical football pretty much every year.

Now for my cards...
I think NCC plays a fair schedule with the possible exception of Benedictine.  Benedictine could be good in a few years...thier facilities are new and very nice (I saw them recently) and it should help them recruit a bit better in the future, after all NCC started getting better recruits after they added field turf and a weightroom...of course it eventually will come down to wins...nice facilities mean nothing without W's.

I would like to see the NCC vs. Benedictine game become more competitive because it used to be like a cross town rivalry and now I think NCC takes it for granted as an easy week on the schedule.  Concordia (WIS) and WashU are two mid-level solid football teams that play well...I'm interested to see the new order with Benedictin not being the first game we play as kind of a "warm up" (no disrespect but until they get better thats just what it is).  I think it will be a good indicator of how well the cards will play if they come out of the gate with good focus and wins.

I've been enjoying the season previews being posted look forward to the rest being up soon...Enjoy the summer folks

Unfortunately in the interest of accuracy I have to point out that Wheaton also lost the Bell in 1997 in the last game of the year.  Rumor, and I mean rumor, has it that North Central's coach retired immediately after the game.  The Reason?  "We beat Wheaton."

Ah, you are right.  I completely forgot about that one.  Thanks for the correction.

It's okay, I think defense is more important too... for similar obvious reasons. :) Plus, I mean, the defense can score all a team's necessary points if they're playing really well... but can the offense play defense? Nooo... well technically yes, but only if they screw up really badly!

This is terrible!!! I can't talk to you anymore. How could you let the Cards win???  >:( :D :P ;)

Tell you what... if we set up the whole play again as a halftime show this fall at homecoming, with the same guys, in slow motion... and this time, you didn't miss your guy this time, would that make you feel better? ;D

Sorry, that was really mean, it just seemed funny at the time. :-[

Awww... although, I don't have any tragic sports memories like this I know the feeling of plays haunting you. Sigh. Dan Aultman is my absolutely least favorite person in the entire world!  >:( :D

Oh well, 43 out of 58 and only 3 losses in two decandes for Wheaton isn't toooo bad. I don't exactly forsee myself crying to sleep tonight.  8)

No need to setup the whole play... I saw it a ton of times in the film session on Monday following the game and for several years afterwards as a coach.   :-[  It was run back again, and again, and again, and again...

Unfortunate thing is that I didn't even have to make the tackle... I just needed to hold my ground and let my teammates clean up.  We changed our defensive scheme just a bit for that week and the defensive alignment called for outside linebackers to have different responsibilities than any other week.  Flat out I just screwed up.

No need to bore everyone else with the ancient history (and no need to give CardinalAlum more to revel in).  I really don't dwell on it as much as it seems, but when the topic of the 1987 Wheaton/NCC games comes up, I do feel a bit of twinge of pain as I let my teammates down.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Bell restored to it's rightful location.  ;)

Mugsy, while I understand you taking this upon yourself, allow me to encourage you to look at the facts from another perspective. Football is team sport and not one play or player is solely responsible for a win or a loss.  There certainly was ample oportunities during the rest of the game for other players to step up, make different decisions, make plays, not make their mistakes and prevent the score from being that close to begin with.  It is like the goalie in a soccer game who allows a goal in an overtime shoot-out  resulting in a loss. Every player on the team had opportunities to make better plays and prevent the game from coming down to shoot -out in the first place. That is why they call it a Team Sport.  Wow, that sounds like a lecture....sorry.....but that is a pet pieve of mine...thinking that a game is won or lost by what happens in the closing minutes.  Alot of playing happens between the starting whistle and the final buzzer!

Awww! Group hug everyone!  :D :P

Obviously that's true... a lost game usually has MANY points in which things could have been turned around or saved.

I'm hearing rumbles that NCC is NOT playing a pre-season scrimmage this year??  I don't see the sense in that.

This is true.  Intrasquad will take place, but not against another team.  Very depressing...

Now you guys all have me feeling bad!  Ok, I'm all for recreating the play.  We'll run it the other way and that way the responsibilty switches sides!  Seriously, and I tell people this all the time, Wheaton was always an incredibly physical team to play against.  They were always well coached and ready to play.  Augie was in their glory years back then and Millikin was always tough as well, the conference was as tough then as it is today and will remain so.   This is great D3 football being played in this conference.  Enjoy it! :)

I for one can't wait.  Less than a month away and we will all be treated to yet another incredibly exciting year of CCIW football.  My absolute favorite time of year.

So many tough teams... so many big games... so many big plays.  Strap it on and let's go!
