MatBlake,

I played in that 97 game against Wheaton...  although our coach did retire...it wasn't because we beat Wheaton.

Speaking of that game...that maybe one of my greatest football memories, not because of the win...but because it snowed 6 inches the night before the game...the field was covered in snow...it was all slop...just one of the classic old school type games that everyone dreams of playing in.  I remember i couldn't feel my hands by the second quarter (thank god i was on defense.)

Thanks washedup, I tried to emphasize that it was an extremely sketchy rumor, but it is always good to have direct confirmation.

I too was at that game, but as a fan.  The worst thing about it was that the snow had changed to rain, but the temperature hovered around 35-37 degrees.  To me, rain in that temperature range is about 1000 times worse than snow.  Add that to the fact that we lost the Bell and it made for a quiet trip home.

Have you ever been to cciw.org? It's the place to go for all things CCIW. Once run by the amazing and incredibly nice HOFer SID Dave Wrath (Augie SID) and only improved now that they have a full time SID on the job, it's a great, easy to navigate site where you can find a lot of answers like that very easily.

What about cookies Mugsy? That's a little more up my alley. :)
I've heard about April's famous cookies over on the CCIW Hoops board.  Yum! :)
Cookies?  Mugsy, what do you say I eat the cookies and then you go for the jog!
LOL... CardinalAlum, you kill me!  For one of us, those would make for some low-fat cookies.

Mugsy, I actually made cookies for the football team once... it was like, for the get together when they announced our seeding one of the years we were in the playoffs... I think it was over 250 cookies. The basketball team is much smaller than the football team... so honestly I probably made about the same for each team over the year, but it just went a lot further. :D Hence the famousness there. As much as I love the fb team, one time and then I decided I was done with 6+ straight hours making cookie sessions!  I've also made cookies for my geology students, coworkers, roomate, family, and well, d3 fans from all over. It's fun... I get to try out recipes and other people get to absorb most of the calories.  ;D

If I come out to the homecoming game this fall, I'll try to bring out a suitcase of cookies, and we can have a little d3 gathering and all you guys can swap ancient history card-wheaton stories in realtime while I smile and nod. :)

Incidentally, it's so nice to be on a CCIW board that's not dominated by discussion about one team and how amazing they are, and have always been. (cough)

Diehard,
I've often thought about having a pre-game cookout for any CCIW posters attending a particular Wheaton home game.  I'll give this some thought based on schedule and what I might be able to do...

Sounds good on the potential cookie gathering.  You know it won't take much to prod "ole-timers" into talking about the glory days.

Typically it is in these "glory day" discourses and rants that it is confirmed that men have a storehouse of virtually worthless sports information, yet have a hard time remembering their anniversaries.    I'll bet I could quote the quarter by quarter scores of every football game I played in going back to 7th grade!   :-[

As to your last comment, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The thing I like best on cciw.org is the composite schedule.  It just gives me a better perspective on the conference as a whole.  Plus, you can see what lies ahead for the pick ems!

Matblake,

Couldn't agree more about the 40 degree weather with rain...absolutely horrible.  Much rather have just snow.

Actually we had a game in '98 against Millikin for our homecoming where it poured rain all game.  by the end we couldn't tell who was who because we were all covered in mud.  Temp was somewhere in the 40-50 range....and afterwords we couldn't enter the lockroom until one of coaches hosed us down (literally) with water...which was about 34 degrees...I'm pretty sure i was sick the entire next week.

The score of the aforementioned game was 7-6 Millikin.  I think the winning score hydroplaned into the endzone.

Ouch.......That hurts.  Considering the current state of our football team (and I won't be the one to re-live my old glory days when it was unthinkable to not be in the "upper half") basketball is the one thing we have to still hang our hats on.  It's not easy being green you know.

April, as devildog points out, what else (athletically) have we got to brag about lately?!

So, just to ruin your day( ;)), here are the all-time CCIW bball standings (wins do not equal losses, since the records include former members Lake Forest, Illinois College, and Carroll):

School        W     L       pct.      GB

IWU          620  221    .737      ---
Augie        491  349    .585     128.5
Wheaton   418  327    .561     154
NPU          349  309    .530     179.5
Millikin       438  403    .521     182
Carthage   307  423    .421     257.5
Elmhurst    288  468    .381     289.5
NCC          323  518    .384     297

If the Greenies NEVER won another game, it would probably be about 2020 before anyone overtook them (about 2030 if Augie goes in a slump).

[And I promise - NO MORE bball on the fball board (but I just had to do it for April!)!]

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out our Ladies' golf team has a conference 4-peat going and back to back NCAA's.

So we got that going for us........which is nice.

Wheaton 1-0
Illinois Wesleyan 1-0

I enjoy watching oldtimers talk about the glory days... old people have a lot to teach us youngsters... and as long as it's not onesided... hmm... or as long as it's about Wheaton, I'll enjoy it. ;D

Today I tried wedding/bridesmaid dresses on with my sis... and it just sorta hit me, as her maid of honor I will really need to be flying coast to coast a lot in the coming months. I really want to come to homecoming, but even that would be a stretch. And homecoming would be a crazy weekend to do it. You should definitely consider it though despite the fact that the most important (haha, yeah right!!!) guest won't be there. I've enjoyed almost every real life conversation I've had with a fellow posters, and it's always fun to put names with faces.

Sorry guys, this post can't remain unanswered.

If IWU never won another game, we would have to have some pretty stinking bad years to not pass IWU in half that time. ??? Did you forget how many games were in a season? :p

Incidentally, note how Wheaton has like... 100 less games than IWU or Augie... could that possibly be because we were such AN AMAZINGLY UNSTOPABLE FORCE that the other schools were jealous AND THEY KICKED US OUT OF THE LEAGUE? Just a thought.  :P
